It's funny, I thought about doing the same thing and setting a goal of 52 or something, but somehow it felt right to do 100 again. Wow, you read 5 books today!

Oh no, I did not read 5 books in one day!! That would not happen unless they were teeeeeeny tiny kids books! LOL
I thought about it at great length and set my goal at 150 with the idea to read more intentionally and to NOT continue books that just aren't' working for me, and here we are, on the 2nd of a new year and I am dumping my first book! LOL

** This was just awful. I really dislike books that drop you into the middle of the story and you have NO IDEA what is happening or who the major players are. Add to that a meh narrator, strong language and the attempt to cut the genitals off the secondary MC and I was done. This one, having had for so long long is a huge disappointment.

I loved Jon Cryer in the 80's, but I do think it was the CHARACTERS that I loved and not the actual person, who I found while listening to this, that I didn't really like very much [which made me sad].

So disappointing to have two books that you didn't like so close together, but good on you for not wasting your time or energy on them for long. Chuck 'em in the volcano and move on to greener pastures! On the bright side, you did flag a genre that is probably not going to resonate with you (most of the steampunk genre gets very into the 'nuts and bolts').

I am sad to lose a genre, but I am glad it is there for those who love that kind of thing.
It has been VERY freeing to just let books go [I still have a little guilt, but nowhere near as much as the past] and the books I have read have been mostly fantastic so I will take that. :-)

** I am so disappointed. I absolutely love this author and was so excited to read this book [with its STUNNING cover] and then I started it and...sigh. I started it and found that 1. it was the super-popular trope of a dual POV [UGH!] and 2. it was...boring. Super boring. I found I didn't care about the characters, or the story, or...anything. I was making myself read it every day, and was so relieved when that day's reading was done. I realized then, that I need to just DNF the book and move on; I am very sad to have to quit, but also relieved because I just was not loving this.

Dawn Michelle, I've been dumping quite a few books this year, too. Mostly, ones that I got for free on Kindle . . . I am seriously trying to whittle down my To Read list these days. As I get older, I find I am less tolerant about sticking with books that I'm not truly enjoying.

Life is way too short to read books that aren't doing it for you; even authors I love have hit the chopping block and I am okay with that.

** There is nothing cheerful about this book. There is no hope [and in doing a little research about this book, it doesn't seem to end with any hope either] and is all sadness, despair, and is filled with casual evil.
The thing is...the writing is really fantastic [I don't remember a lot about Peace Like a River as it was years ago that I read it, but I remember loving the book and the writing and being eager to read more from this author. His excellent writing has not diminished] - you are SUPPOSED to feel all these things along with Rainy as he experiences them and you are supposed to be horrified at the casual evil that is permeating his world [it was just so disturbing to read while these matter-of-fact villains did their evil deeds].
My problem is [and this is why I cannot finish in SPITE of the excellent writing], I suffer from depression/anxiety and unfortunately, currently am not in a very good place in my own life and I realized this book and its overwhelming sadness was just adding to it [and making my already dark thoughts much darker and more dangerous for my well-being] and that I needed to stop immediately.
Maybe someday I can revisit this book, but for now, I must let it go.

** I will not tolerate abuse in real life [this was not always the case, but I am much braver now that I am no longer in my own abusive situation and will fight tooth and nail for those who are in the same situation], much less in a book series that used to be spectacular and has since devolved into one of the hottest messes I have tried to read. I disliked the previous book in the series quite a bit and was pretty sure I was going to skip any upcoming books, but decided to take a risk [because the first three books were just fantastic] on this new one and was sorry almost as soon as I started it. The abuse Megan takes from her girlfriend is dangerous. And diminishes the whole book. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT EVER [not in real life. Not in books. NOT. EVER.]. Not that there needs to be any more of a reason, but you are dropped into the story not really knowing what is going on and it just gets more chaotic as the book goes on [and the abuse starts almost immediately] and I just found that I could not [and WILL NOT] read a book where the MC is being treated so badly.
I am very disappointed in this series and the author - I am not sure when it became okay to write book with abuse as something that everyone just deals with and mostly ignores, but in my book, it is NOT okay and I cannot support that.
**I won't even begin to get into just how awful this narrator is as well**

I feel like I had a banner month of DNF books; I am so hoping for a better month in May! It was difficult to not get discouraged. On the plus side, I did have quite a few 5 star reads, so there is that!! :-)
I am reading like crazy but am without a computer and either you cannot update from the phone app or from the Fire or I just can't not figure it ouf. It's making me insane and I have lists and pieces of paper everywhere!!! I CANNOT wait to get a new computer even as I am sad that I'm losing all my files and photos!!! Sigh. It's always something right?
