I can’t believe this is our 6th year doing this challenge!
Here are the tasks for 2024’s TBR Challenge:
1. Read a book that is at least 5 years old
2. Read a book with a title that starts with the letter “F
3. Read the 25th book on your TBR shelf
4. Read a book with a peach cover (or a light orange or light pink colour)
5. Read a book with a dragon in it
6. Read a book with an unreliable narrator
7. Read a book with the theme of technology
8. Read a book set in Asia
9. Read a book with a TV show or movie adaptation
10. Read a middle grade book published in 2023
Why I chose these tasks:
1. This year will be our group’s 5th anniversary!
2. The year we’re embracing is 2024.
3. Google turned 25 years old in 2023!
4. Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2024 is Peach Fuzz.
5. The upcoming Lunar Year, which starts in February 2024, is the Year of the Dragon.
6. The Cambridge Word of the Year for 2023 is hallucinate.
7. In recognition of all the technological advances made in 2023, particularly the increasing use of AI through ChatGPT.
8. In recognition of the many tragedies that have occurred in the continent of Asia in 2023, including earthquakes, major wars, and political unrest.
9. In celebration of the SAG AFTRA strikes leading to better pay and conditions for actors and writers.
10. In commiseration of goodreads not including middle grade books in the 2023 ŷ Choice Awards for the first time.

As always, the events highlighted above are not indicative of their important in comparison to other events, I just managed to come up with interesting tasks for them.
For task 1. the book can be 5 years old or older.
For task 2. if the title starts with “the, “a, or “an you can discount them and focus on the next word in the title
For task 5. the dragon doesn’t have to be a character in the book, there just has to be a dragon in there.
For task 8. it can be any country in the continent of Asia—and there are a lot!

also i paid 0 attention to the choice awards this year except for one book and I’m disappointed to hear they didn’t have a middle grade section
@Jessica YES! I love that energy!
Maybe this will be my year when I finally complete the TBR Challenge!👏🏻👏🏻 it’s only 10 books, how hard can it be, right? (Very hard, I am terrible with deadlines😩)
Yeah it’s sad goodreads cut out mg books from the awards. They also cut out poetry books and graphic novels, the focus was definitely on YA fantasy and romance this year. I thought it’d be cool for us to do our own mg awards on the group instead but then I forgot about the voting round we were supposed to do and now it’s too late so I guess I’m as bad as goodreads🤪😂

mmm not surprising since there are SO MANY that fall into that category, but still…feels weird to cut sections out completely as compensation.
i feel like your case is a biiiiiit more understandable than goodreads 🤣🤣

Haha thanks that makes me feel a bit better about abandoning that event. My goal for this year is to have better organisation for the group events though so here’s hoping!

Glad you’re joining in!
For books with an unreliable narrator I would recommend:
Here Lies Daniel Tate - YA mystery
Dangerous Girls - YA murder mystery
When I Was Joe - MG mystery thriller/coming of age
Nimona - MG mystery fantasy
We Were Liars - YA mystery/romance (I recommend this one the least but it was very popular when it came out so it’s worth noting)
If anyone has any more MG recommendations please share them because I am now staring at my TBR realising I don’t know any unreliable narrator MG books apart from the ones I’ve already read!

And can I just add that I’m considerably impressed that the 25th book on my TBR shelf just happened to be a book people have recommended to me. It’s even more impressive if you saw the other not so great books that are a few spaces above and below on my TBR; I definitely lucked out!

No problem Steph! And sadly it’s one book per task so you may have to go back to the drawing board on the dragon task. I’m also struggling on that one. So far all I’ve come across on my TBR is Anya and the Dragon which has a beautiful cover but some reviews say it has a slow pace and I usually end up dropping slow pace books. My search for dragon books continues!

8. a book set in asia Extras by scott westerfeld
initially was going to be my over-5-years-old book, but about 225 pages in i learned the characters are actually speaking japanese and everything has been happening asia
who knew? not me, that’s for sure
**disclaimer: i could have VERY easily missed a detail early on, but that was one heck of a brief detail if so
@Jessica I was going to say I’ve read that book and had no idea it was set in Japan but then I realised from my bookshelf that I didn’t read past the third book in that series. Also after searching for it on goodreads I can see the main entry has a Japanese character as the cover art haha!

ah, I’m reading the ebook version so have paid 0% attention to the cover lolol

You've just reminded me of this challenge and I've just realised I still don't know what to pick for task 6. It seems like no one has one for that it's a really hard one😩 I should really make these easier!

a book older than 5 years: clockwork angel
a book with a dragon in it: a natural history of dragons (i didn’t read the synopsis and so didn’t realize it was not actually a history of dragons but was instead a fictional tale of a girl obsessed with them no judgment bc same but it was a disappointing discovery; and it’s still got dragons!)
and 8. a book set in asia is complete: extras by scott westfield

1. Read a book that is at least 5 years old No More Dead Dogs

I must say that peach is not a popular color for book covers!
First, I've selected Fourth Wing as a book with dragon in it. Then, as a book with a title that starts with "F". But, in the end, I've selected it as the book with a peach color :)
Just in case, someone in the group is looking for peach covers, I came across The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis and Kiss the Dragon by Marina Eshli.
They both have dragons as well, but I've read these books before the challenge started.
