A couple of things to keep in mind:

Communication is key. Please make sure to check in regularly with your team.

Let your team know if it looks like you won't get your review posted by Thursday, 11:59pm. You do have all of Friday to submit your review, but it can be intensely frustrating for your captain if they don't know when or if they can expect your review before the deadline.

If you know beforehand that you won't be able to read and review a book during a certain week, you can request a pre-arranged absence from me, either by posting the request in the discussion thread or by sending me a pm. The request has to be submitted before the team rolls for the week in question, can only be approved by me as the mod in charge of running the game, and has to state a reason for the absence. (Reasons for pre-arranged absences can include e.g. going on vacation or work trips, planned hospital stays, exam period, etc.)

If you do not have a pre-arranged absence and won't be able to finish your book in time for an unforeseen reason, please let your team know as soon as possible. If the team has earned the free pass, it can be used to cover the missing review. Without a free pass, the team has to sit out the next roll.

We all know that real life gets in the way sometimes, be it through family emergencies, work emergencies, natural disasters, technical problems making it impossible to get online, or in other ways. That being said, please do keep in mind that this is a team challenge and your team relies on you to do your part unless an emergency occurs.

If you find that the pressure of keeping up with the pace of the game gets too much for you or you wish to stop playing for any other reason, you can drop out of the challenge at any time. In that case, please let your team captain and/or me know that you wish to drop out rather than just disappearing without a word so your team won't be penalized when you fail to turn in your review. Thank you!

Captain's Handbook

The team's captain is its chief organizer. This includes rolling the dice, posting the team's new spot to the team thread and the Post Your Spot thread, collecting links to team members' review posts in a single post to be linked in the Post Your Spot thread, doublechecking that books and review posts comply with requirements, reminding team members to post their reviews in time if necessary, etc.

The captain may delegate some tasks, such as rolling and posting the new spot to the team thread, to another team member if they so choose. (Either a designated roller who fulfills this role every week, or whichever team member is online first once rolling is possible.) Collecting reviews into a single post and posting to the Post Your Spot thread should always be handled by the captain.

Instead of having everything handled by a single team captain, teams can also choose two co-captains to handle the workload.

Selection posts are not strictly required by the game's rules and I won't be checking for them. It's up to the team captain to decide whether they want them.

If the team captain requests a pre-arranged absence, it's their responsibility to arrange for another team member to step in as temporary captain.

The team captain is my primary point of contact for the team and should allow receiving private messages.

Hi Everyone...

I'm checking in and saying hello. I'm Michelle and I live in New York so I'm in the EST. I've played twice before and this is one of my favorite challenges. I can't wait to meet everyone.

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) Hello, I am Stormie. Just checking in. I am in California, so PST here. ;) I don't think that I have ever played this, so please bear with me while I figure out what I need to do, besides reading and reviewing, that is. :D

Michelle | 1557 comments Hi Stormie...

Nice to meet ya. If you have any questions i will be more than happy to answer them and help you out.

message 9: by Laura (new)

Laura | 854 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm Laura and I'm in North Carolina, so also EST. I've played this one a couple of times. I can captain if it's needed, but I'm captaining several other challenges right now, including Uno which takes up a lot of my online time. So if someone else can do it, that would be great.

message 10: by Michelle (new)

Michelle V (booksherlocked) | 34 comments Hi, everyone! I'm Michelle (I see there's another Michelle over here so you can call me Andrea hahahh) and I'm actually in Central America utc-6. It's been a whole since I participated in a challenge in GR but I'm super excited in participating on this one

message 11: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Hey team! I'm Samantha and I'm in South Carolina (EST). This is my first time doing this challenge and am pretty excited to participate! I've done team challenges before in different groups and it helps me stay on top of my reading <3

message 12: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1557 comments I can Captain unless someone else really wants it more.

Anyone have a suggestion for a team name?

message 13: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Michelle, I'm good with you being captain.

I'm looking at past SS team names and a lot of them are puns off of their team number, so for us it would be something with 1. I'm just trying to get a list started to get the juices flowing.

1 Team To Rule Them All
1 Book to Rule Them All
One For All
And There There Was One (a play on And then there were none)

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) Michelle,
Thanks, I will let you know when I have questions.

I am also good with you being Captain.

Since we are Team One, maybe Ready, Team One, a play on Ready Player One? That is the only thing I can think of now, I hope it doesn't sound too lame.

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura | 854 comments Or maybe Ready Reader One?

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) Laura wrote: "Or maybe Ready Reader One?"

That's a good one!

Michelle V (booksherlocked) | 34 comments I'm also good with you being cap, Michelle.

As for the name I love "Ready Reader One?" It has a nice ring to it

message 18: by Michelle (new)

Michelle V (booksherlocked) | 34 comments "One For All" is pretty good as well. idk.. it's hard choosing one hahahh

Mamacita aka MawMaw (mamawantsbedtimestory) | 1251 comments I love Ready Reader One.

I'm Mama & I live in Texas so I'm in CST. I read only romance & this is one of my favorite challenges.

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Ready Reader One sounds awesome! I think we have a winner :)

message 21: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1557 comments I like Ready Reader One as well. It's even fun to say.

message 22: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1557 comments The last couple of times I played the team took turns rolling the dice. Is that something everyone is interested in?

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle V (booksherlocked) | 34 comments oooh that sounds fun I think we can do that

message 24: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1557 comments I will set up a schedule.

If someone does not want to roll, just let me know.

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) Michelle wrote: "I will set up a schedule.

I don't want to roll as I am uncomfortable with doing that just yet. I would prefer that someone else does until I understand how this works. :)

message 26: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Rolling sounds like fun 😊 for the people who have played this before, should we be planning out books to pick up for prompts or is there a different strategy to use?

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) I am curious to know how to get started with my book planning as well, I have about 40 + library books out and would like to be able to plan when to read them. :)

message 28: by Laura (new)

Laura | 854 comments Michelle, if we're going to go with Ready Reader One I think you have to post it in one of the threads.

Planning for this one is difficult because the book you read each week depends on our roll. If you pick a few different series, you can jump around with them.

We get bonus points for a few things:

One point can be earned for reading three or more books in a series.
One point can be earned for reading a book with >500 pages.
One point can be earned for starting and finishing a series. There must be at least 4 books in that series. Series + spin-off totalling 4 books also counts. For series with >9 books, point will be awarded for reading books 1-9. For still ongoing series, all books published to date (OR up to #9 in longer series) must be read.~ No re-reads on this one.
2 in 1: One point can be earned for reading a book that fits both the series number and the alternate for the spot you are on.
One point can be earned for never picking a book from the alternate list. This point is awarded when your team rolls past 90. (this only requires one person to do it for the point for the team)
One point can be earned for always picking a book from the alternate list. This point is awarded when your team rolls past 90. (this also only requires one person to do it for the point for the team)

I personally will read a series book for each week.

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Laura, I’m glad you added that info about reading books that only satisfy the alternate option because I was wondering if it was a one person or a team thing ❤️ it’s good to know you’re encouraged to read series for more points - I could use the extra motivation to get through all the series I have started and never finished 😅

I’m so excited for this challenge!!

Thank you for this! I may try that too with the series. I also read a lot of books over 500 pages.

message 32: by Laura (new)

Laura | 854 comments We can also earn 1 Free Pass by having everyone on the team finish their book at least 1 day before they are due. Then if we have a week when someone isn’t able to finish in time, we can use the pass and we don’t have to skip a roll.

message 33: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1557 comments @ Everyone - I set up the rolling Schedule in MSG 6. I basically went by when everyone checked in. I know we will have more weeks, so I will fill it out later.

WEEK 1 - MICHELLE (NY)
WEEK 2 LAURA
WEEK 3 MICHELLE V
WEEK 4 SAMANTHA
WEEK 5 MAMACITA

What I do is I make a spreadsheet. I have 10 tabs labeled. On tab 1 I put all the series 1 books, Label 2 I list all my series 2 in the books and so on. That's how I keep track.

Perfect! I've been wanting to make something, but wasn't sure how to put it together. This sounds perfect <3

I'm going to be reading Sir Thursday (The Keys to the Kingdom #4) by Garth Nix. This worked out perfectly because it's the next book I need to read in the series.

Nice I'll read Four to Score (Stephanie Plum #4) by Janet Evanovich

I would imagine it works for a number in title. Finding a number in a title in numerical format rather than written out would be difficult.

Mamacita aka MawMaw (mamawantsbedtimestory) | 1251 comments In the past it has been helpful to split up the bonuses. And see if anyone wants to work toward that challenge.

Mamacita aka MawMaw (mamawantsbedtimestory) | 1251 comments I can work towards the following bonuses

#1 ~ 1. Never picking a book from the alternate list.

#2. ~ 2 in 1: One point can be earned for reading a book that fits both the series number and the alternate for the spot you are on.

#3. ~ 3 or more books in a series

Just so you don't drive yourself crazy looking, one of our Michelles is reading a book this week that works for our roll and the alternate task. :)

I saw in one of the threads that selection posts aren't required. It was probably the "How to play" thread, but it could have been one of the other threads for this game.

Michelle, would you mind using the Bold when you post the roll? It would be helpful to me personally to be able to squat it on the thread easily. Also when I have been a captain in the past I would always try to Reserve the first post on the next page & repost it at the top of each next page 4 each team member to spot.
