I'm finding it hard to summarize this book (the author has a great summary herself), but I love what the author says in her note at the back of the ebook:
"I wanted to explore how and how often we justify it to ourselves when we cross moral lines. Where do we follow the rules, and where do we justify breaking them? Do our pasts determine what we deserve in the future? And is it ever possible to leave your past behind? These are some of the questions I hope the novel raises."
I only read that section because I was still deep in thought about the book after it ended, and this really gave me clarity on why I seemed to empathize with some many characters and be grieved for some with how things turned out. The characters never knew how their actions/choices were truly effecting the people around them - those effects are far-reaching.
This is an excellent book. The author has little snippets of allowing us to see the inner workings of the mind of several characters. I was captivated from the story in the beginning, and even with lyrical prose (which can slow me down so I can catch the visualizations and literary elements) I finished it in 2 days!
I do highly recommend this book, pretty much to anyone.
