Jen K | 3055 comments Such a quirky character study. A very beautiful twenty something is overwhelmed with the world and decides to take a pause of life for a year. She is just so tired and decides to sleep for the year with the hope of finally feeling refreshed to try again. Of course literally sleeping for a year is difficult without lots of drugs to stay sedated. Throughout the year of sleep, the reader learns more about her relationship with her parents who had recently passed, her toxic boyfriend and difficulty with friends. She would have benefitted with proper therapy instead of finding the yellow page pill pusher but chose to sleep through rather than work through her problems.

There isn't much action as the goal of the MC is to sleep for a year but it is a thoughtful reflection on how she got there and chose her path of sleeping. It was interesting to see her few relationships evolve or not thought the blackout activity was a bit terrifying. While meant as an extreme, I can see how the escape is attractive to someone struggling and many do. The end was a bit melodramatic. Overall I enjoyed the idea of the story.

Thanks for the thoughtful review. I've thought of reading this a few times. I remember thinking that this could have been me in 2020 if not for my reading groups! Whenever I'm sick, my body insists on sleeping for long stretches, and I feel better when it's done. Otherwise I just feel more tired when I sleep too much.

Jen K | 3055 comments I tend to get sleepy when overwhelmed as well but this was more of a drug induced slumber, not sure I would consider it a healthy response for a body needing rest.
