For this week, I'll read Bird Box. I'm not really into horror books (I read some when I was younger, but found them too much disturbing for me) but the atmosphere here seems scary, unusual and interesting. I hope I'll enjoy it.

Summary:
Something is out there, something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remains, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now that the boy and girl are four, it's time to go, but the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat--blindfolded--with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. Something is following them all the while, but is it man, animal, or monster?

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments I'm interested to know what you guys think of this. I read it back in December, and was a little disappointed with it. I should mention that I like scary books. I did like the way Malerman transitioned the chapters between the past and the present, but I just felt it was missing something. The story kind of reminds me of The Road.

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments Keeks, I did. Though initially I leaned more towards the dislike. The more time I've reflected on the book, the more I like it. I found it a bit boring at times, but there was something about the writing style that I just loved. I think the overall father-son relationship is what kept me going. What wouldn't he do to protect his child.

I went audio book instead of my usual eBook as I knew I would have the time for it at work this past week while I was getting a non-thinking part of my job done (being alone in the office made it easy :)

Samantha | 122 comments Picking a book for this week was hard to figure out; I don't normally get scared by what I am reading. This sounded like it could be creepy so giving it a shot. So far it isn't really scary but the whole being blind folded all the time makes me feel uncomfortable, perhaps that will build into scary.

Doesn't really build into scary, but stays at uncomfortable/creepy.

Well that was a quick read!

Christine you were right I did feel a sense of unease throughout the book and it was creepy.

I can get a little freaked out when watching a movie or TV show but books for some reason affect me differently so never built to scary.

All and all enjoyable read glad I choose it.

I just started it, I think it will be an easy read for me as I enjoy the writing. So far, the atmosphere is interesting and a bit creepy, I'm curious about what will happen next.

At 58%. It's really oppressing, so it's a success for this week. I like the atmosphere and, as said by Manda, there's a The Road feeling here. You never know what will happen next, but it's obvious it could be something pretty bad.
The past/present jumps are interesting and add a lot to the story, giving knowledge of the events and helping to learn a little who the characters are. However, if you're searching for a book with complex characters, you'll be disappointed by this one.
The writing is ok, nothing special here, it's neither great or bad.

Finished! It was really nice with a creepy atmosphere. I'm glad too I chose this one and I really don't want to live in their 'post-apocalyptic' world, curiosity would have driven me mad.

Emily I agree with what you've said, Zaz. I thought the writing was just okay, and the characters were just okay (one or two that I liked, but no one that I was totally invested in), but it was worth reading for the creepy atmosphere. It definitely gave me chills while reading it. I know I wouldn't have survived that world, because I'm pretty sure I would have let curiosity get the better of me. More unsettling than scary, but definitely gave me the creeps.

Erica | 214 comments I just read this as a side read and couldn't put it down. I thought it was very creepy.
