This is our planned reading and discussion schedule for Fernando Pessoa’s, The Book of Disquiet.

The book was published posthumously, and the order of the pieces isn’t entirely consistent between different editions. The text I’m using is the Penguin Modern Classics edition, 2002, translated by Richard Zenith.

The Book of Disquiet will serve as a kind of background text for our next set of books, which share a kind of “existential angst*, and which Pessoa and his heteronyms seemed to personify in this collection of disquieting fragments. We’ll read the book and have a single open discussion from March 30th thru July 5th, 2015. When referring to a particular fragment, please list the fragment number and the first sentence, in case members are using different editions.

(*The existential angst books are:
Notes from Underground - Dostoevsky
The Tartar Steppe - Buzzati
The Plague - Camus
The Tunnel - Sábato
Desperate Characters Fox)
