Our group read for June 2024 is West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. This is the discussion thread for the book. Please make sure you are marking any spoilers.

Liza | 68 comments Ooo yall, I flew through this book, and just absolutely loved it. I love Woody, I love the giraffes, fantastic resolution at the end, I loved it all. I have done some extensive road tripping and have driven through many of the states on this route, as well as from eastern Texas, up through the panhandle and west to Phoenix, so I could really envision everything and cant imagine trekking through these parts with such precarious cargo. Many parts of this route are pretty unchanged from the 30s and they remain incredibly remote. Be prepared to do a little boohooing at the end.

House of Eve broke my heart (in a good way I suppose). Woody and the giraffes totally restored it.

I love hearing this! I put this on my list for the summer challenge to ensure I read it this month, but I admit I haven't picked it up from the library yet. I will move it up my list because I could use a book that makes me want to keep reading all the time.

Maureen (maursbooks) | 559 comments I just finished this. It is a real heart warming story. Wonderful adventure, with very interesting characters.

Wendy Froese | 9 comments I had seen this book recommended frequently in the Facebook group but it just didn’t seem like something I would enjoy. Boy was I wrong!! I got the audiobook and was totally swept along on journey with the giraffes. It was happy, sad, funny, serious. So good!!

Silver | 8 comments I got a late start on this one had some other stuff I had to finish first but I just started reading this one. So far I am quite enjoying this one. I will admit I am a sucker for animal stories. There are aspects of the story that reminds me of Water for Elephants but it also has that sort of Tom Sawyer innocent sense of youth and adventure.

Jackie | 30 comments Admittedly, I am not so much a fan. The draw for me was the San Diego Zoo. Woody and Red were undesirable characters; continued liars, trouble-makers, thieves---even if during the Depression years, I couldn't warm up to either of them. The giraffes, though, are lovable sweethearts along with Mr. Riley.

Patricia | 85 comments I've had this on my kindle forever, so glad to be given a nudge. I'm not quite finished, but I'm enjoying it so far. Took me awhile to get into it, to be honest, but the giraffes kept me going.

I'm at about 100 pages and I'm struggling a little. I haven't really connected with any of the characters.
