Any questions??

Good question. Let's say 140.

Cool!

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 2312 comments Are you going to be posting tasks in each persons thread?

message 6: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
Yes. I'm posting tasks over the weekend. The challenge doesn't start until July 1st but that will give people a bit of time to plan. Books finished prior to July 1st won't be eligible to satisfy any tasks.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 2312 comments Ok, thanks Erica

Initial tasks have been posted. Pretty sure I got all the threads - just holler if I missed you.

And remember, the challenge starts on Monday, July 1st. Tasks posted for planning purposes only.

Yes absolutely!

Deedee | 169 comments Hi! I'm making up my lists, and I have a question:
FLOWER POT ON COVER
Do vases with flowers (but no potting soil) count as flower pots? Here are some examples of what I mean:
The Radiant Way by Margaret Drabble Jane and Prudence by Barbara Pym

I'm thinking this one counts for certain because the flowers in some of the pots are clearly in potting soil:
Rules for Visiting by Jessica Francis Kane

message 12: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
Hmmm. Vases don't cut it really. Your last one is much more clearly in the nature of a more permanent planting (that might attract bees). I may have been a bit rash on my earlier call responding to Sally906's question - but in the moment I first looked at that cover, the flowers looked potted to me.
I should probably drink my morning coffee before responding to complicated questions, lol!

message 13: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 3803 comments For the optional spell out, I have a 2-part question...

1. By 'optional' do you mean a) we can choose to do it or not do it but still have to do the tasks, or is it b) in place of doing the other tasks?

2. If it's the first part (a), and we choose to do the spell out, do we have to finish the spell out before getting our next set of tasks?

message 14: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
1. Yes tasks are mandatory and spell outs are additional options.
2. Good question. On reflection, I think the next set of tasks will be posted when the first set is done, and spell outs can be done more slowly over the year. But a book may only be used once - either for a task or for a spell out.

And thanks for the question. It's not always easy to figure out how a challenge will play out when you're writing it...

Avigail (avigailr) | 103 comments Erica, hi,

Do we, need to fulfill all three tasks before moving to the next set of tasks?

message 18: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
Yes. This challenge requires all three tasks to be completed.

message 19: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (grandmommyd) Any suggestions for the first task . . .

a book where the MC is not tidy

I am drawing a blank on that one.

How about The Diary of a Bookseller (Diary of a Bookseller, #1) by Shaun Bythell ? The owner of that store describes a pretty messy existence at his store... I'm not terribly fussy about tasks. Really any MC who is something short of a neatnik will do.

I just read Freaky Friday if you want a blast from the past. The daughter's room is a disaster.

Perfect! I was also thinking of Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh but couldn't remember if she was all that messy. I need to reread it...

message 23: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (grandmommyd) Thank you for those suggestions. My library has both of them, which is a plus.

message 24: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1986 comments For the 2nd task (Read a book with a flower pot, window box or other small garden on the cover.) would these two work (not sure yet which I will finish:
Summer on the Mountain by Rosemarie Naramore - it’s a mountain meadow rather than a planted garden
Knot in My Backyard (A Quilting Mystery Book 2) by Mary Marks the garden is barely visible (outside the window)

message 25: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
I would say Knot In My Backyard (A Quilting Mystery, #2) by Mary Marks is the better fit. The other one is a large mountainside - reaching beyond the concept of small. And not likely a garden tended by someone either.

Thank you.
I just hope I like it enough to finish or that I find another one fitting that task.

Cozy mysteries are usually pretty fun - and fairly quick too!

OK then .... (still making up my lists) .... this cover has flowers but it's unclear whether they are wild or in a garden ... what does the moderator think?
and I have other books I could use instead if this doesn't fit
(maybe someone is messy in the novel LOL)

Or does it need to be potted flowers?

Sorry folks. I took a day off of electronics yesterday (which I highly recommend).

Answers:
For spell outs you may use the first and last initial of the author's name and the first letter of the title (using or omitting a/an/the).

I had no IDEA the small garden would be so problematic!

DeeDee, the oceanside view looks wild to me, so not a garden.

Alison, I'll accept a potted plant, as that suggests some kind of human involvement - hence gardening at least on a very small scale.

Generally looking for a human tended planting that might attract bees. Flowers in vases don't really cut it (so I probably erred in my answer to Sally's question at message 9 - but I'll have to stick with that).

That’s ok - I didn’t use the one I asked about in the end - found one that fitted better 😃👍

Oh good! It surprises me how hard it can be to quantify a basic word we all know.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 2312 comments Did not see this covered. If it was and I missed it sorry.
Does "crack" need to be only in that form.
Can we use, cracks, cracked, cracking, etc?

message 35: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
Crack or cracks works. It needs to be the noun form, as that is where some bees live.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 2312 comments Got it, thanks

message 37: by Lori (new)

Lori Wilen | 307 comments Each book counts for one task and also the spell out is that correct?
The book I read fits tasks 1 and 3.
Sorry if this is a stupid question.

message 38: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (last edited Jul 10, 2024 10:42AM) (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
No, each book can be used just once. The spell out is separate but since it's optional, I'm going ahead with posting the next set of tasks when the current three are done - regardless of how far along you may be on a spell out. So most people will finish the basic challenge long before they finish spell outs. I need to come up with something to post to acknowledge the spell out completions...
And, not a stupid question. No such thing in my book. I'm the kid in school who would raise her hand and say, "Are we talking about A or B?". Usually numerous other heads would be nodding in the classroom because the teacher would have COMPLETELY lost people but no one wanted to admit it.

Melissa (ladybug) | 240 comments Would this cover fit flower pot? Specifically the upper left hand corner seems to have a hanging flower pot but I'm not sure as I cannot see details very well.

Mrs W Woodruff | 811 comments Lessons Learned Lessons Learned by Nora Roberts would this be considered a garden scene?

message 43: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
Okay, the cut flowers in the vase don't do it, but on close examination it appears to be a well tended yard with hedges and small trees (the little one in the center especially) that suggest a garden. So I'll say yes.

message 44: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) | 103 comments Would you accept the following book cover, on the desk, you can see a potted plant or do you want something bigger?

A Passionate Love Affair with a Total Stranger by Lucy Robinson

message 45: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
That works. We'll imagine that she's working at an open window and a bee flies in!

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 2312 comments For the task Shelter on the cover can it be more substantial? Also, does it need to be open to the air?
Porch, or gazebo are things I have seen on cover that come to mind. Unless it does not need to be open the would any building work?

message 47: by Erica, Quality Control Supervisor (new)

Erica | 4502 comments Mod
I was thinking more along the lines of a porch, gazebo, lean-to or other structure less substantial than a full building.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 2312 comments Ok, that is why I asked for a little clarification on it.
Thanks Erica

Margaret (grandmommyd) I finished Step 2 last week, but haven't had Step 3 assigned. Am I doing something wrong in my thread? I am new to doing challenges with this group and still learning how things work.
