OK all - it is finally time to pick our books for each person and to get reading. Sorry it took so long to get this done. :P

Below are the team members, their number of books, and the shelves they want us to pull from:

Amanda - 3 books from nominees
Susan - 3 books from POTS 2015
Marie - 3 books from To Read or Own but Unread
Kaitlin - 2 books from To Read
Lyn - 1 book from TBR Library

Remember - When picking books for team members, you pick them number they signed up for plus one. For example I signed up for one book, so each person will pick 2 books for me to choose from.

Those are great, Amanda, but you need to add one more to each list as we pick the number listed plus one.

Here are my choices:

Amanda I have only read the first one that I chose, but I really liked it. The others sound really interesting, though.
Elizabeth Is Missing
A Spool of Blue Thread
The Paying Guests
I Am China

Susan
These are all books I really want to read, so maybe you can read one and let me know what you think. Except The Quiet Game. I just started the second one in that series and I really like them.
The Twelve
Dreaming Water
Bitterblue
The Quiet Game

Marie

I loved all of these.
The Secret Garden
Where There's Smoke
Black Beauty
The Raven

Kaitlin
I loved all of these, too.

The Giver
The Joy Luck Club
The Princess Bride

My choices:

Kaitlin
Omigosh! You have so many on your list that I've rated 5 stars that it's really hard for me to pick.
>Ender's Shadow
>The Shadow of the Wind
>The Kite Runner

Marie
You have some real classics on your lists. And the last one I chose because I'm really curious about it.
>The Cider House Rules
>Love in the Time of Cholera
>Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
>Chasing China

Amanda
Almost all the books on your list are totally new to me. These are just ones that appealed to me, and I sort of tried to go for variety. I really want to hear what you think about the ones you choose, so I know whether to add them to my TBR.
>The Shore
>Nest
>Heat and Light
>The Country of Ice Cream Star

Lyn
I love Inspector Gamache, and the other looked interesting, even though its ratings are not all that high.
>Black Water Rising
>The Cruelest Month

Lyn,
Have you read the first two in the Graceling series? I gave them each 5 stars, so I'm sure I'll love Bitterblue.

Bum! Can you tell I never really quite woke up yesterday ? It was a looooooong week!

Ok, one more for each :

Susan
And the Mountains Echoed

Marie
All the Light We Cannot See

Kaitlin
The Help

Lyn
Shakespeare's Trollop

message 9: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments Susan, all the books are new to me also (except Station Eleven which I have read. They all are nominees for women's literary prizes.

I've booked up A Spool of Blue Thread and The Country of Ice Cream Star with the library. I am 94th on the list for Blue Thread, so I may have to chose something else!

Sharb Objects had a long waiting list at the library, but luckily the electronic copy was available. So I'm starting with that. The descriptions of how "dark" it is worry me a bit, but that was true of the author's Gone Girl also, and I thought it was terrific. So here's hoping.

Kaitlin | 39 comments Sorry about that... this weekend was crazy, just now finally got the time to sit down and look at everyone's lists. After looking at everyone's lists, I am realizing how poorly read I am as I have not even heard of most these books.

Amanda (I haven't read any of these, I just picked what sounded interesting):
This House of Grief
How to be both
The Walk Home
Dear Thief

Susan (I haven't read any of these, I just picked what sounded interesting):
The Forever War
Dead Lines: A Novel of Life . . . After Death
The Casual Vacancy
Twisted

Marie (I haven't read any of these, I just picked what sounded interesting):
Rhinoceros Summer
Year of the Dog: How Running Sled Dogs Saved the Life of a Middle Aged, Woefully Mediocre, Mother of Eight
If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things
What We Saw

Lyn (I haven't read any of these, I just picked what sounded interesting):
The Terror of Living
The String Diaries

Amanda | 380 comments Thanks Kaitlin,

I have booked up How to be both and it is on shelf! Yay!

And I have only heard of most of these books because they are on award long-lists and one of the book shops emailed me the lists, so don't worry if you don't know them! I really don't know them either, just trying to make myself read new books.

Thanks for doing that.

Since I have the luxury of reading 3 POTS books, I try to read at least one from each of the people in the group. (I know, that would make 4, but sometimes I can do 4 even when I've only committed to 3.) So it works for me to start with the first choices, then add on the others as they come in.

Marie, there's some overlap in your list with what others have chosen. Fell free to add others to replace them if you want. Since there are 13 books even with the overlap, I'll have plenty to choose from either way, unless Lyn says otherwise.

Kaitlin, I actually read The Forever War one day last week, but forget to move it from the shelf. Sorry. My mistake. I'm ok just picking one of the others you listed, though, unless you prefer to choose another one to replace it.

You're killing me Susan ;) how about instead of The Forever War, I'll pick Flashback

Technically, there should be no overlaps, but it is really up to the person whose list it is. If they are OK with it, I am okay with it. :)

I've finished Sharp Objects, and it's a very good book. I can't say I really enjoyed it, exactly, because of the terrible things that happen. But it's definitely worth reading. My review here .

I've started Bitterblue. Lyn, you should definitely read it, but I recommend you read at least Graceling first, for important backstory. Fire and Bitterblue can really be read in either order.

Susan, that is good to know. I actually own Graceling and it has been sitting on one of my bedroom bookshelves ever since it came out. I really need to read it. What I need is to find some way to fit it into a challenge, lol.

I finished The Casual Vacancy. I have to say I was rather disappointed in it. I hardly liked any of the characters at all. Not that the characterization was bad, but they just weren't very likable. It made it hard to care what happened to them.

Wow, Susan you are cranking along. Sorry you were disappointed in the book.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
I finished Black Water Rising, and while I enjoyed the book in general and the historical perspective of the Black Liberation Movement from the early 70s, I found the main character quite annoying. In fact, I found both he and his wife quite annoying and wished other characters had a bigger part in the book.

message 27: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments I finished reading How to be both a couple of days ago. It was more like 2 sort of connected stories, and i probably enjoyed the first part more, but the second part was more interesting, if that makes sense ?

The first was a teen girl coping with the sudden death of her mother, moving between the present and past conversations with her mum, whilst the second was from the perspective of the painter that they had been interested in during the first part.

message 28: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments Finished The Invisible History of the Human Race: How DNA and History Shape Our Identities and Our Futures last night, and I have to say i really enjoyed the first half, but found the second half a little more difficult. It got a little bit too science-y for me.

Glad I read it, I don't read a lot of non-fiction, so I was glad for t he challenge.

Now to see if I can get the third book finished by the end of the weekend!
