Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments General topic - No Spoilers please for our September 2024 Group Read book, The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton.
Are you planning on reading this book? If you do, please let us know and comment on the separate Spoilers Welcome thread.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments This group read Turton's The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle back in 2019. My review notes I didn't love it, but I am looking forward to trying this new one someday soon.

I really didn't like The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle- I don't think I finished it but eventually I'll give this one a try

Gflyy Dewyea | 11 comments I had mixed feeling about The 7.5 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. I loved the premise of the book and the way the story unfolded was creative. I just wasn’t feeling Turton as an author or his writing style but I’m willing to give him another shot. I’ll plan on digging into this book a little ahead of schedule. I’m currently finishing up The Only One Left by Riley Sager. I think this will be my first group read with the group since joining. 😝

Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments Gflyy: I'm glad you are planning to try Turton again too. Looks like you and I and Sherry are of similar thoughts on the other book by him. I enjoyed The Only One Left! It was also a group read; discussion here: /topic/group...

Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments Looks like I have a five-week estimated wait for The Last Murder at the End of the World from the library. That title is certainly a mouthful.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9340 comments I did not read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle with the group and after The Last Murder at the End of the World I'm tempted to. But I think I'll see what those of you who have read both have to say about the latter. As it is I'm not encouraged by your so-so reviews and am curious about whether you like this one better. Off to post some initial thoughts before I forget.

ղé (valerielarouche) | 4 comments Is anyone else reading this book?
I just started it last night. I'm only a few chapters in, but already I love the wtf, butterfly effect elements in the intro.

I've read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and it's one of my favorite novels to date (the kind I wish I'd written).
I also read The Devil and the Dark Water and although I felt like it dragged on at times, I loved that the end threw me for a loop.

Looking forward to reading more of Turton's latest!

Emma Perry | 3 comments I have read all 3 of Turton's books as has my mum (she wasn't a fan of his first two but did like this one if that helps those who are undecided). It is also much shorter than the previous ones and I would say easier to follow.

Yikes! If this one was easier to follow I despair about reading the other two!!!

GailW (abbygg) | 439 comments I started it last evening and was interested enough to continue reading it until 1 am. For me, it is definitely easier reading than 7 1/2 Deaths...

Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments Gail: good to know! My Libby loan is a week or so away from my turn.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments I finally got my turn at a library loan for the audiobook and started it tonight. An interesting premise, though the narration-style / voice with an omnipresent narrator hasn’t completely engaged me yet, will see how it goes.

message 14: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments For anyone on the fence I found this to be a compelling read and enjoyed it. The narration-style is quite effective under the circumstances of the plot.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9340 comments I agree. I listened to it and found the narration both effective and compelling.

message 16: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann (annrumsey) | 16677 comments Carol: It's funny - I started out with a rating of 4 stars and raised it to 5 after I wrote my comments on the Spoilers Welcome thread. in reality a 4.5 when I apply my secondary scale.
