I imagine that certainly could happen. I try to avoid those audiobooks.
The best narrators for me set the place and the characters with their voice and inflections to a point where I just settle in and let them weave the story around me. I love a good narration. A few audiobooks take you out of the story; it could be mispronounced words or a less than smooth delivery of phrases or dialogue.

Really Good audiobooks
Breaking the Dark (Marvel Crime, #1) by Jewell, Lisa a group read, first in a new Marvel series. Starting out unfamiliar with Jessica Jones, and lightly knowledgeable about the Marvel universe I was immediately drawn to Jessica's story and listened fascinated as the stories unfolded. Dual times were important and worth rewinding the audio to reorient as I listened. Compelling and intriguing, I look forward to the next two in this series.
All the Colors of the Dark Whitaker, Chris a must-read author for me. Easily one of the best books I have read this year. The characters are now so familiar I think I would recognize at least one of them on the street if they walked by and the others after a short chat. Not that they were so specifically described, it is that the novel led me to vividly portray them in my mind's eye and feel like I know them, their fears, motivations and what they love.
The Night Shift by Finlay, Alex Gail recommended, she said this book was unputdownable- and it was. The multiple points of view and timeline shifts expertly build tension and nail-biting suspense. Very well done. Great on audio. (I did take a few days to listen to it)
Three Anthony nominees and very good audiobooks
City Under One Roof (Cara Kennedy, #1) by Yamashita, Iris Atmospheric, and a bit claustrophobic as our mc, Cara is stranded in a remote Alaskan village by an avalanche that blocked the only access tunnel to a beautiful but starkly cold isolated area. I will definitely continue this series.
Play the Fool by Chern, Lina A fun read, a nail-biting search for the truth with compelling characters solving a murder while inadvertently exploring what they want most in life. I loved it. Awards and nominations well deserved.
Time's Undoing by Head, Cheryl A. Both timelines, 1929 and 2019 move the narrative forward with nail-biting moments and revelations as Meghan McKenzie seeks answers about the murder of her great-grandfather. That this book is inspired by the author's own family history adds to the haunting nature of the story.
Good audiobooks
The Coroner's Lunch (Dr. Siri Paiboun, #1) by Cotterill, Colin on my audible backlog, glad I finally got to the one, will continue the series.
Cat & Vivian by Ward, Amanda Eyre an audible short novella, atmospheric cat and mouse mystery.
Fatal Rounds (Liza Larkin #1) by Rubin, Carrie suspenseful medical thriller.
