Voting is CLOSED.
Vote here:
Live results and book links:

For the past few years we've gone through a process of voting for and scheduling past reads from the group bookshelf and reading them as a side group. This is intended to work in conjunction with the group Read All the Books! challenge. It is not necessary to join the challenge to participate in this process.

We'll be voting and scheduling for three months at a time. We'll be scheduling two reads per month based on member votes.

1. Voting will take place in
-> November for January-March
-> February for April-June
-> May for July-September
-> August for October-December

2. Schedule will be posted by the end of the voting month

3. Books that have been read by the group (main or reread) in the 24 months prior to the scheduled period will not be eligible, and will not be listed on the form

The only thing you'll need is a gmail login. You'll be able to change and update your votes at any point during the voting process. Books will be listed as title, author, page count.

For all books on the group shelf, see the links at the bottom of Current Events.

I'm almost certainly going to be reading The Quantum Magician again in the near future. What I believe will be the last book in the series is expected to be released around this time next year. Whether that means I should start lobbying for it now or wait for the second quarter is a question for the literary gods to answer.

Well, I'll vote for it now and you'll have to remind me in the second quarter if it doesn't win this time around.

I have scads of books in that series (part of a Humble Bundle), so I'm ready to go on that one

That's okay, Mel. You can read the sequels!

message 13: by Kaa (new)

Kaa | 1534 comments This Alien Shore! Heard some good things about it recently from other group members who have read it, so I'd be interested in trying it soon-ish.

I added it to my votes. While I was in there I picked The Warrior's Apprentice because I'm about due for a reread of the Vorkosigan series.

I have a strong interest in White Cat but otherwise just think more fantasy books should get up voted.

message 16: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 5868 comments wow, I might have to actually start on my copious amount of Drizzt books.

message 17: by Kaia (new)

Kaia | 568 comments I'd really like to read The Stars My Destination if anyone wants to add a vote for it!

Melanie - I'll add White Cat to my vote. :-)

message 18: by CJ (new)

CJ | 394 comments HOMELAND!

LOL, really all of these are great, I just really love Homeland. I think I also voted for The Stars My Destination, since I want to reread that.

I read this years ago and liked it at that time. I also added it to my vote.

Olga Yolgina | 589 comments Kaia wrote: "I'd really like to read The Stars My Destination if anyone wants to add a vote for it!"

Me too! Voted for it the first time, it's a pity can't do it again. After The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, want to read more classic sci-fi.

I also root for The last Unicorn and She Who Became the Sun.

Will add a vote for White Cat. Cats are good.

message 21: by a.g.e. montagner (new)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 601 comments I might have been voting too enthusiastically for this list, and I've missed a few selections along the way (Piranesi, Frankenstein).

Nevertheless, I'll jump in with classics from both fields: The Last Unicorn, Solaris...

Moreover, for my afrofuturist reader: Karen Lord, Rivers Solomon (who was personally recommended by Ryan). I'm also campaigning once more for G. Willow Wilson, whose Bird King I'm reading now.
Curious about, but not particularly committed to, Neal Stephenson.

message 22: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3630 comments I have helped out with a number of requests above.

Personally, I would really love it if we could do The Poppy War, which is a book my son read recently and really, really wants me and his father to read.

Also, Rivers of London. I have also only ever read one novella by Becky Chambers and would like to catch up. Any of the ones we have on the shelf would be great.

I'll vote for these too, Diane

message 24: by Michael (new)

Michael B. Morgan | 121 comments My vote would be Neuromancer or Snow Crash, but I read 'em too many times. So I'll go with White Cat and The Poppy War. They both sound interesting.

message 25: by a.g.e. montagner (new)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 601 comments There's no limit to the number of books you can vote for, in this case.

message 26: by Walter (new)

Walter | 32 comments I’m voting for Homeland!

message 27: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 1259 comments HOMELAND. in this thrilling first installment of the Dark Elf Trilogy...
Drizzt Do’Urden... meant to be sacrificed to...

{laughing} Okay, let's get it over with!
😇🧝‍♂️⚔

I will also root for White Cat by Holly Black.

Further down, in the 4s:
The Aeronaut's Windlass - Jim Butcher
City of Stairs - Robert Jackson Bennett
The City We Became - N.K. Jemesin

What can you tell us about either?

I'm happy to see a Neal Stephenson in the list. I'm down with (post) cyberpunk!
I'm also curious about The Last Unicorn.

message 33: by CJ (new)

CJ | 394 comments I think I did vote for both of those, Diane, as I have had library holds on them already (my hold on the Bester one just came in so I'll be reading that soon anyhow).

message 34: by Economondos (new)

message 36: by DivaDiane (new)

The stars my destination is a classic I’ve been wanting to read, plus it’s short!!

CBRetriever | 5868 comments January = both books for me

February = both will be rereads

March = none are in my TBR or Read piles, so if the price goes down, I may get them

White Cat (310 pgs)
Neuromancer (271 pgs)

February:

doesn't matter - the January ones are short so having both in the same month is OK

ditto for February

I was hoping this book made it: The Aeronaut's Windlass as I'm reading it for a challenge on another board (did I mention I'm a glutton for challenges...). Maybe the next quarter...

eventually or maybe not - I'm fine with reading books by myself

message 50: by a.g.e. montagner (last edited Nov 26, 2024 11:32PM) (new)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 601 comments I hoped that G. Willow Wilson or Karen Lord could make it. Or possibly Neal Stephenson. Maybe in the next round! As it is, I'll join for The Last Unicorn: Deluxe Edition, at the very least to see what it's like.

If it's all the same for everybody else, I'd ask to have Neuromancer later on in the quarter.
I'm kinda circumspect about starting new series, but this one at least is inevitable for me. I've had the Sprawl trilogy on my literal shelf for a decade and it's been on my TBR for the best part of my life. It looks like a great option for my next big project in the spring 2025. Needless to say, this is a rally for fellow 'punks and a proposal for the inevitable Sprawl VBC!
