Here is the place to discuss retellings, traditional tales, or books set in or near the ocean.

Kelsey | 105 comments Some recommendations:
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi
The Changeling Sea
Lagoonfire (a small press title I loved, technically a sequel, but would work fine as a standalone)

On my TBR:
A Letter to the Luminous Deep (I'm not sure if this really has any major fairytale/folklore/mythology influences, or if it's just underwater fantasy, would love if someone could tell me.)
Deeplight

I loved this book; one of my favorite of the year. There is definitely folkloric influences. I won't give details, but they are there and this would certainly count for the challenge.

I will likely read the second book in the series for this, when it releases!

Kelsey | 105 comments Thanks Margaret, that's probably what I'll be reading then! It's one of my top priority books for the new year.

I loved both The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, as well as The Changeling Sea!

I haven’t heard of Lagoonfire, but will check it out!
I don’t know what I’ll read yet

Some other books that I enjoyed that would work for this prompt are:
The Mermaid of Black Conch
The New Moon's Arms
The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea
The People of the Sea
Something Rich and Strange
The Brides of Rollrock Island
Swim the Moon

Lots of books that I love have already been mentioned. Here are a few more.

Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland: A raucous queer pirate story with folklore.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T.J. Klune: The sea folklore is more prevalent in this second book, though the first book should be read first.

Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa: A post-apocalyptic horror.

Plain Jane and the Mermaid by Vera Brosgol: A middle grade fantasy graphic novel.

The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag: A YA fantasy graphic novel

Tidesong by Wendy Xu: A middle grade fantasy graphic novel

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant: Horror, continues to be one of my all-time fav horrors.

A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow: YA contemporary fantasy with sirens.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse: Fantasy trilogy, one of the three main characters is a mermaid.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater: YA fantasy with kelpies.

Erin (erindarrow) | 47 comments I plan to read Eliza Chan's Tideborn for this one, which is the sequel to Fathomfolk.

I'd also suggest the following I've read (not already suggested hopefully):
Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse, the conclusion to the Between Earth and Sky series
Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier
The Dragon's Promise by Elizabeth Lim (sequel to Six Crimson Cranes)
The Daughters of Ys graphic novel by M.T. Anderson and Jo Rioux (though it wasn't for me, it fits the theme)
Skin of the Sea, Natasha Bowen
Thirsty Mermaids, graphic novel by Kat Leyh
The Wicked Deep, Shea Ernshaw
The Gloaming and The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan
maybe Circe by Madeline Miller
The Fourth Island, Sarah Tolmie
Where the Waters Turn Black, Benedict Patrick
The Deepest Blue, Sarah Beth Durst maybe

Yes, great recs! I will make note. I just read Other Birds for this prompt. From the description it fits perfectly as it takes place on a small island off the coast of South Carolina. I loved it and it is a good book for people in this group, however there were no actually beach scenes, so I will definitely be looking for something else.
