Amy | 12613 comments This should be easy. I assume North of Boston is Canada! Three times we have driven to Quebec, one of our favorite places. Can I ask a question. Canada is wide, and covers the entire United States, but I can still use it, right. If not, I have a Vermont option. I did some extensive research last night.

The whole country of Canada isn’t eligible, because a lot of the country is to your NW. Look for locations that are more directly north from you.

message 4: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 10593 comments What do you know? Santa got my letter! I asked for suggestions for NW Canada a few days ago, and received many great suggestions from members!

Thanks Fran for the Christmas present. I hope everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or just a great week.

Vermont is also more NW of you. Try Concord NH or Quebec city ... or perhaps Baffin Island?

Rachel N. | 2175 comments Joanne and I are both leaving MI in a SW direction. I haven't looked at a map yet but I think that would include a good chunk of the U.S. and parts of Mexico. I'll have to go digging around to see what I have.

message 7: by Jen (new)

Jen Mays | 258 comments Looks like I'm heading into Oregon or Washington first...will have to dig into my TBR to see what might fit. I already checked for British Colombia and didn't spy anything there.

You could also go New Zealand, Sydney Australia, or one of the islands along the path. If you have Playground on your tbr, that would work too. It’s set on French Polynesia.

====
Fran or Joy, there appears to be an error in travel math. When I entered Detroit to Sydney, the map shows a clear South West line between them. But the direction says it’s West. I found similar errors before too. Clearly we know it’s SW, not W. But in situations where a line isn’t so obvious (e.g if it looked SSW) do you have another way to check a direction without calculating the angle yourself? Or can we trust our eyes?

Theresa | 14883 comments I got NE! Such fun!

ETA: just edited this to cut chatter and move that to Compass Chat.

Thank you, BnB, for our lovely Christmas Gift!

Ha, was just fingering my way to the edge of Mexico, trying to figure out how to stay on a SW angle after Mexico! LOL

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12224 comments Rachel in my un-schooled opinion, Australia is too far South. I say stay below Taiwan and above Australia to stay true to SW. Sorry Nancy.
Also the Upper East Coast of Africa is fair game too, in my mind.

I would consider Australia South West of Michigan or the US in general.

If you use
they show a world map with flight path and it looks pretty much SW

message 13: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12224 comments Ok then, I just thought I was going too South and not enough west.

message 14: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 14883 comments I just used Fran's calculator to confirm that Iceland works for me for NE. Great tool, easy, and the map with the route shown confirmed it. Thanks Fran!

I have my nordic noir set in Reykjavik, Iceland all set, downloaded and ready to read come New Year's Day. Doesn't have any Canada tags but it does have a lot of Iceland tags. And its from my TBR. I am HAPPY! 🙂

One thing everyone has to remember is that farthest north you can go, regardless of direction, is Northpole and south is South Pole. That gives those leaving from North America and heading in a y southern direction a lot of options.

message 15: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 9335 comments I just got an error that my request couldn't be estimated due to "government restrictions." So, I guess the use of the tool is a bit limited. Still a good one for many places, though!

Ah, they must think you work for a spy agency. Haha.
Was it on airmilescalculator, travelmath, or something else?

message 17: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 9335 comments It was on the flight path calculator that BnB posted. It's not just me - I think anyone flying to certain places in Russia from the US would get the same note.

Also flight paths often go over the North pole, depending on where you're traveling from and to, which will give different mileages and the directions can differ. In my opinion, we should use the map directions (or latitude/longitude or headings). The heading is the most accurate.

I figured it had to be related to a location that was viewed as a threat.
Which program gives you the heading?

You are 2nd from bottom - direction NE. Join Jason and I in Iceland. We will find a cozy pub in Reykjavïk with roaring fires and warming drinks to compare our books and impressions of Iceland.

List is in order of signup.

message 23: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12613 comments That has happened to me plenty of times. When I am on the app and I am looking for a spin of some kind, it gets cut off. I have either had to ask someone or wait until I can get on my laptop. Sometimes it cuts of the last word of something too.

Sounds wonderful!!! I don't know enough about the difference between Greenland and Iceland (maybe this challenge will help) but when you made that post, I thought of the bar in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It's one my favorite movies. In the movie he is in Greenland, but that's what I envisioned.

Ellen, why are you stuck in Texas? Couldn’t you cross the ocean, or is your goal to stay in the US?

Added - San Diego California is WEST (and other locations too) . It bear slightly north but not very much. The compass direction is closer to West than to Northwest.

From travelmath:
Your flight direction from Galveston, TX to San Diego, CA is West (-74 degrees from North).
Your flight direction from Galveston, TX to Los Angeles, CA is West (-71 degrees from North).
