Dan | 184 comments On the menu to start 2025 we have Binti by Nnedi Okorafor, the 2015 novella that launched Okorafor to SF stardom. It wasn't her first work. She had been writing published novels since 2005 (Zahrah the Windseeker) and stories since 2000 ("The Palm Tree Bandit"). But this one won awards, multiple prominent literary awards, including the Hugo Award for Best Novella and the Nebula Award for Best Novella, among others. A television adaptation is reportedly under development at Hulu.

So what's the deal, you ask? Well, the protagonist, Binti, a young woman, is the first member of the Himba people from Earth to be accepted into the prestigious intergalactic university Oomza Uni. She boards a vessel to go there, but has some trouble on the way. Her ship gets hijacked! How will Binti ever reach university now so that she may receive her education? This is that story.

Okorafor followed up this novella with two (short) novels and a short story (so far). But this is where the excitement began. Join us for it, won't you?

David Lutkins | 29 comments I have seen some very good reviews of this novella, and am looking forward to reading both it and the discussions here. I just got a copy from one of my libraries and am hoping to get to it in a week or so.

Dan | 184 comments Congrats on picking up a copy for free. Since the Kindle version of the book is just $1.99, which I find the most convenient, I'm going to go ahead and help make Ms. Okorafor a bit wealthier.

David Lutkins | 29 comments I just finished Binti, and for me it's just an OK story, not great. The plot was a too simplistic and the science fiction not very strong.

I think the story might have worked better as a full length novel, where there would have been room to develop the plot and the characters more.
