Inspired by Iain, I'm checking in on whether folks are interested in continuing the series. Should go ahead and request the next trilogy, which will bring us out to August--and then there's interweaving the Frank books.

Definitely... I don't see a need to delay...

Only reason to consider it, is because I have a feeling we'll need to delay Dune until January, if we want to try and get interest in new people joining us off and on for the re-reads...

I figure that means we read Princess in December, so we can do Dune in January, then Paul then Messiah, then Winds, then the rest and the sequels...

If that's the plan, it might be worth doing Caladan in July/August/September, just to spread the gap out and shrink the gap leading to December...

That sounds pretty good. That'd also be a standard spooky/cozy skip.

Finally started... Catching up on BRs... I'm really liking a lot of aspects about the battery life of my Motorola phone when used exclusively for audiobooking...

I have little excuse to listen to certain books at home anymore, if its purely about battery issues...

Only battery issue I have is needing to recharge Bluetooth after 5-7hrs of continuous use... I think I need to buy a 2nd Bluetooth set so I can hotswap and let one set charge while the other is in use... Purely for home use... At work I can just do one ear at a time since I'm only able to use one at a time for safety anyway... At home I want to be listening in both ears because I can...

I read Red Plague the other day, from the short stories list... And it felt like a waste... I think it actually belonged before Sisterhood of Dune, and was more of a sequence that became part of that book... It was just about Venport trying to give a planet red plague cure and they decline and die as butlerian idealists...

I am listening on my Motorola phone these days too:) No complaints so far!

I had sound issues years ago when I tried listening on Motorola audiobook apps with apple corded earbuds... Must have been audio codec mismatch issues.... Soundcore Bluetooth have worked 10x better... When I bought Motorola tho, it was to keep using cords, cause I was stubborn about end of 3.5mm support...

Haven't haduch to say so far, through first 33%...

Battle lines were set in previous book, and this has mostly been expected escalation...

Most curious plotlines is the Erasmus one, since it needs to fizzle out at some point to line up with the main series...

Nearing 50%: cracks are forming...

(view spoiler)[ Venport's attack on Roderick and Manford's timely arrival, have brought them back into shaky alliance... Norma Cenva took the Venport blockade away on her own imperative, ruining Venport's victory, and too late to stop Roderick's destruction of the Arrakis spice stockpile... Butlerian agents still cause issues for the Bene Gesserit... Etc etc etc... seeds of ruining everything to maintain the series status quo basically... (hide spoiler)]

70%: so much book left, and I think the final battle sequence has started already... Wonder how much denouement there is, at the end...

I misjudged the plot pacing... 88% now... (view spoiler)[ from spoilers, I knew manford would die, Anari would take over, and it would fade away without such fanatical and smart leadership... and without ships/supplies ...

I thought it would happen closer to the end of the book, tho... This is more of a slow decline... Same for Venport, after the crippling losses, betrayal by Roderick, and unexpected developments with Anna Corino & Erasmus...

And DAMN... Anna Corino... That's one thing I didn't spoil... Erasmus is great at coming to human conclusions a bit too late...

Also Norma Cenva making independent deal with Roderick...

I knew she survived, but not all the ruthlessness and her own form of the Golden Path, independent of the Bene Gesserit...

Also the end of the Vorian & Valya plot ... Knew some aspects but not others... (hide spoiler)]

Read this today and oof--(view spoiler)[So many tragedies--and all due to people's own flaws and inability to let go... stubbornness!!

Rodrigo and Joseph Venport. Making bad decisions. Not being willing to back down. Moderately pursing revenge... There was a line in there, where Norma thinks something along the lines of "Rodrigo was a moral man, but his priorities were different from hers..." and that seems like it could stand for so many things... all the tragedies here are due to people's priorities getting crossed... and not taking the time to stop and talk about it... I'm glad that Norma was able stop that cycle, at least... Rodrigo watching Joseph transform, and thinking "okay, maybe this is enough revenge for me..." If only Valya would find the same experience.

I feel bad for Tula... And I'm really curious about Vorian. And Tula's child. The HBO series picks up about 30-40 years after this book... but I'm wondering if the duo have (or had) plans to write more... or if they'll just leave it to HBO?

Anna and Erasmus's plotline sickened me. Yet another woman who throws her own potential away because of a man. I saw y'all talking about male writers in the Crown of Slaves thread (hopefully be there tomorrow)--I was definitely feeling that here. Erasmus dying too, trying to save her, didn't really redeem it. He threw himself away FOR something. She threw herself away as a reaction, without a goal. Felt like fridging--killing her off just to further a male character's emotional journey.

THANK GOODNESS Manford died though. And doesn't quite get the martyrdom he wanted. I stuck my tongue out at him when he died. (hide spoiler)]

Anyway, I kinda viewed Anna as warped by her dad/childhood... Latching on to the first affection she got, and savaged when it was another lie... Definitely not healthy .. even if close to the classic XYZ test (which checks whether women in fiction are fully fleshed out characters, or just exist to talk about men)

Good comment on crossed purposes and vicious cycles... I was especially saddened by the final lines, reinforcing the Atreides/Harkonnen feud for millennia to come...

I am 80% in... Back at work today so not much time to comment... (view spoiler)[ Manford just got killed! Finally! I couldn't stand him! The way he thought of his followers as just "blood to be spilled", "martyrs", bodies to be sacrificed, not actually human individuals, was sickening!

Anna and Erasmus. She is so mentally injured, and he is such a cruel machine, you just know this is not going anywhere good... I wonder if she really is pregnant...

The big cyborg dudes all got killed... I wonder if all machines will be destroyed, now that the Emperor's forces turned in Joseph Venport too...

I wonder how the authors are going to connect the later Idaho with Anari Idaho...

Every darn scene with Valya in it, makes me sick! I didn't think I could hate Harkonnen as much as I hated the Barron, but Valya gives him a run for the money. I don't even truly blame Tula for her actions, because Valya totally manipulated her into becoming an instrument of her obsession with vengeance! And I like the Sisterhood, but she is despicable!

I can't wait to see if she will really face off with Vorian and I am hoping that she doesn't come out alive from the meeting, even if Vorian is lost too... (hide spoiler)]

Finished... Almost a 5 * read for me, but not quite... (view spoiler)[ One of the things that kind of brought it down was the Romeo and Juliet type of ending for Anna and Erasmus... C'mon! I can accept Anna doing what she did, but his actions were totally out of character and it felt forced to make him realize how close to humanity he had gotten without realizing it. I wanted more for his character, but as always, I accept the authors' right to tell me their story. I always say, if I could do it better, I would be the one writing:)

I was pretty pleased with everything else though. It was exciting, as always, and kept me riveted throughout.

I agree with you guys, this fude between the Atreides and the Harkonnen is almost ridiculously dependent on the principles never giving up on stubbornness and pride... Otherwise it could easily fizzle away with enough time, and if they let it, which they don't, as we all know.

I still wish Valya had found her end, but we can't get everything we want. I am interested to find out what happened to Tula's Atreides baby... It couldn't have been an easy life with Valya there to either program it to her purposes, or to torture... (hide spoiler)]

Totally agree with you @Choko, on the Romeo and Juliet ending. It worked on some levels, but made me mad on others.

Yep... Bechdel Test... comes up alot in comedy/etc, but I always forget the name... altho I recognize it every time I see it and know it again immediately...
