When we started writing this book in spring of 2023, ChatGPT had been released just six months earlier. We were motivated to share our concerns for the ethical use of this new technology. We decided to focus on the ‘Ethos� or character of the people developing Artificial Intelligence.

It took ten months to analyze and distill references and citations, and to organize the material into chapters that described the ‘Ethos� of AI. We reference the UNESCO Recommendations on the Ethics of AI, the Asilomar Principles and the Center for Humane Technology.

We used Mary Shelley’s story of Dr Frankenstein’s ego-driven quest to create artificial life as a metaphor for the tech giants� hubris in their drive for bigger and more capable AI.
