GailW (abbygg) | 432 comments Dan, what are your thoughts on Binti?

message 5: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16668 comments Gail, not Dan of course 😎 but I gave Binti four stars. (Possibly rounded up from 3.5)
My review from May last year.

Dan in AZ | 2933 comments Gail, my first judgement of a book is whether I would read a sequel if there is one. With Binti, the answer is yes. While the concept of a human accepting an alien as a friend is not an uncommon plot, the MC’s mathematical background allows her to be more pragmatic in this. (Two plus two is the same in any language). I’m interested in how the author develops this relationship.

GailW (abbygg) | 432 comments Okay, I'm sold. I'm teenage refereeing/chauffeuring for the next week and the kids are off school on Monday. Guess who's going book shopping?! (I'm not above bribing/blackmailing - "Look, who's taking you to swim and lacrosse and friends houses? You can go with me. I'll buy you a couple of books." It still works. I miiiiiiight have two more years before she bails on me.)

ChrisQ | 124 comments Solid reading month. Read the first two Binti books bad in the day, I enjoyed them. If I remember correctly I liked the first one best. But solid reads.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9338 comments Interesting month, Dan. I had to look up Uncaged. You know I'm a huge John Sandford fan and hadn't heard of it. How did you like it? It looks like it's part of a series, is labelled as "Singular Menace #1" whatever that means.

message 13: by Dan in AZ (new)

Dan in AZ | 2933 comments Carol, this co-written book is a departure from his usual fare. Young people play a central role with animal rights vs the big corporation as the tag. The MC makes the book a fast ride and a good read. There are a couple more in this series to date which I will definitely read.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16668 comments Good to know Dan! I found Uncaged available as a Libby audio so will see if I can start it soon !

Thanks, Dan. I did get the sense from reading blurbs that it was in the YA category, which ordinarily doesn't appeal to me. But Sandford is so good at characters, plotting, and humor that I wondered if it were worth giving a shot. Sounds like yes.
