Read this book most likely in the early 1990's, but based on age and setting, could have been written as early as the 1960's. It was a coming of age story about a boy, overall sad tone. The boy was lonely, I remember the family life was not great, and he had a collection of hand made animal figures made from clay. I believe one of them was a bear similar to Winnie the Pooh, but with a broken arm. I remember brown was related to the book, either the cover being brown, brown being in the title, or maybe it was just the hazy brown of the 1980's. I've been trying to remember or find this book for years to try to find books for my children to read that I read at their age.

Did he keep the figurines in a cabinet?
