NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3230 comments Last summer I couldn’t think of any *fun* road trip books, though I had other travel books. Since then I picked up at least 3 of them, and plan to read them this summer.

Road trips -
Run for the Hills by Kevin Wilson - road trip
She's Up to No Good by Sara Goodman Confino - road trip, negation
Summer of '69 - road trip , maybe revolt
Long Island - journey/road trip (wedding)

A book that plays with perceptions of reality -
It sounds so intriguing. I know I’ve read a few before but I’m drawing a blank. suggestions?

I recently read Our Infinite Fates, Don't Let the Forest In, and Water Moon, all of which I think would fit the bill for the perceptions of reality prompt. They all feature people who operate outside of (but near) the "real" world. Not complete fantasy, but the characters walk outside of the boundaries of "normal" within the normal world.

Here are some of the listopias brought up in the discussion for this last year:
/list/show/1...
/list/show/4...
/shelf/show/...

For my rejects challenge this year, I ended up slotting in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - the narrator character describes things that are real to him (i.e. the fog pumped into the mental hospital) but aren't technically what's actually happening.

All the Colours of the Dark would fit

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3230 comments Thanks everyone. I have a lot more possibilities and added a few to the listopias. I especially enjoyed Drunk on All Your Strange New Words

message 7: by NancyJ (last edited Jun 06, 2025 06:53AM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3230 comments A book set during a revolution, revolt, or rebellion - I have a few possibilities set in America during the late 1960’s.

I think the Vietnam era fits this prompt. It was full of protests and rebellion. This title clinched it for me: Witness to the Revolution: Radicals, Resisters, Vets, Hippies, and the Year America Lost Its Mind and Found Its Soul.

I have two books titled Summer of '69, Summer of '69. The Women sounds like it also fits (when she comes home).

Perceptions of reality applies to books with alternate timelines like The Husbands and Between You and Us.

Thanks Robin. The husbands sounds fun. A lot of ATY members seemed to like it.

JennH | 518 comments I initially skipped over the perceptions of reality prompt. But the conversation here caught my attention and has me intrigued. Then I saw a book on my TBR that looks like it might work, at least insofar that the summary mentions reality. Would it?

Beneath the Sugar Sky

And thinking some more, since I'm still not too sure I totally understand the prompt, but would A Midsummer Night’s Dream fit?

message 11: by Amy (new)

Amy Smith | 31 comments I hadn't considered doing this as I haven't quite gotten up the nerve to do a read-a-thon, but I just might this time because after looking at the list and wondering, "what the heck is a microhistory?" I now realize that it's one of my favorite non-fiction genres. I just didn't know it had a genre name, lol.

I found this list of Medical Microhistories and I've read almost all of the top 30 or so except one, which is sitting on my bookshelf!

This might be a good Readathon for those who aren't sure because there are no teams or goals. However much you read is fine.

Nothing better than a good microhistory! I should read one...

I was thinking of reading Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection once I finish TJR's new book on audio and using it for the microhistory prompt!

I think A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a perfect fit.

Yay, thanks. I've been meaning to read this for a while. We'll see if I can get to it during the mini-thon.

Help! I'm reading a book about the Gemini Project-- Gemini: Stepping Stone to the Moon, the Untold Story. Has spaceships, not planes and trains. And Gemini didn't go all the way to the moon, so not a long journey. And it's about technology gone right, not wrong.
Any ideas where to put it?

How about “road trip or long journey
It’s a very long journey!

I'm having the same issue with Atmosphere - I keep wanting to use it for the automobile prompt but spaceship doesn't fit haha!

I'm using it for long journey. It's a long journey, even if it isn't all the way to the moon!

We could both rebel and put it in with the car and train!

This book keeps going "it's not as long a journey as Apollo will have..."

message 22: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1502 comments If it helps with your argument for using Atmosphere- space shuttles have a spaceplane component.

“A spaceplane is a vehicle that can fly and glide as an aircraft in Earth's atmosphere and function as a spacecraft in outer space.[1] To do so, spaceplanes must incorporate features of both aircraft and spacecraft

Unless I am miss remembering they discuss this briefly in the book.

Also don’t they frequently practice flying in planes? I don’t know if it explicitly said planes but flight practice seemed to come up regularly.

Yes, you're right! I've gotten further into the book and I think it does fit well enough. Now I'm not sure if that's a prompt I want to vote for haha!

message 24: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1502 comments Ha ha! The conundrums with this read a thon are a nice problem to have. I like long journey better if that helps :)

message 25: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 669 comments I think you could also use it as a metaphorical long journey- it was a long process of getting to space.

I've been reading almost zilch this week. Partly been busy, but even when I'm not, I don't really feel like picking up books. Meh.

Me too! I have an hour left in my book but keep falling asleep. I have a really long drive on Saturday, so that should finish my audio book (is Saturday midnight the reading or reporting cutoff? Cause I won't be reporting till Sunday).

message 27: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1828 comments I'm reading Atmosphere too so this discussion is helpful! Guess we'll see if I finish it in time and then I'll figure out where to put it.

There is a reflection in the sunglass lenses, so I may use it for reflection on cover as well.

I'll probably close the voting tab on Monday morning. Technically you have until you fall asleep Saturday night to finish books, so I want to give everyone Sunday to update the spreadsheet.

Samantha | 1502 comments Thanks for the update on the top prompts. I am a little surprised by the tops; not in a bad way but just not my expectations.

I think a lot of us haven’t logged all our votes yet, so it might change. The book I’m reading now fits at least 4 prompts, so I’ll decide at the end.

message 33: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3768 comments I haven’t even finished a book yet! I hope to today but not sure it fits any of the categories, which is pretty crazy. I’ll look at the categories again once I finish the book.

I've updated the top post. Though the read-a-thon is over, I'm leaving the voting spreadsheet open until Monday morning (CST) to give people time to input their final votes.

message 36: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1502 comments Looks like we will have a pretty decent selection for our pre-poll. Nothing I voted for made it which is always a little disappointing but I will forget all about by they time the poll comes out :)
