Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #3 - J.R.R. Tolkien - The Silmarillion

Finally.....only took me 20 years! Believe me, I've tried quite a few times.

I really like The Silmarillion... there's something about the structure and rhythm to the story. It begs to be read aloud :)

This is on my to-read shelf. I'm currently re-reading LOTR, though, so I'll probably give it a while before I tackle this one. Not sure how much Tolkien I can take without a break for something a bit lighter.

I'll have to agree with you on that one. I liked it too (and like to read aloud too), when I finally finished it. But seriously, I bought it back in 1990 and it's been haunting me ever since. But I guess I wasn't ready before.

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #4 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - Roseanna

Nice one. First in a series of 10 with swedish investigator Martin Beck.

message 7: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #5 - Michael Romkey - I, Vampire: The Confessions of a Vampire - His Life, His Loves, His Strangest Desires ...

Not the greatest book on vampires, but a nice touch with all the historical characters

message 8: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #6 - Danny Sugerman & Jerry Hopkins - No One Here Gets Out Alive

Suberb.....how I love to read about people who made a difference (to me he did at least).

I LOVED this book! I read it when I was in High school. I had the biggest crush on him! But then I read about some the things he did I was like "What a jerk!" but I still enjoyed the book!

message 10: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) Yeah I felt much the same. The guy has been a god of mine since I was a teenager, and still is. But after I read the book, he became more of an actual person, with real problems and serious bloody issues. Wich is cool, I liked the book a lot.

message 11: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #7 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Man Who Went Up in Smoke

Another crime for anti hero Martin Beck to solve. Not as good as the first, but a nice read.

Rasmus, I've never heard of the Martin Beck series, and I feel like I've been missing out!

Well, if you are into realistic everyday life of a depressed - almost divorced - swedish investigator, combined with great crime solving, then you are.

message 14: by Rasmus (last edited Feb 11, 2010 11:07AM) (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #8 - Preben Mørkbak - Sven Tveskæg - Danernes sidste viking

A semiauthentic story about the formative years of the last true viking king of the danes Sven Haraldson Tveskæg. Brilliant.....if you like danish history and viking legends.

Officially he was a christian, but in his heart a true son of the north!

message 15: by Rasmus (last edited Feb 17, 2010 10:05AM) (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #9 - Stan Nichols - Bodyguard Of Lightning: Orcs First Blood

Nothing special, but quite funny at times. An original idea at least, and I have to admit I've always loved orcs.

message 16: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #10 - Clive Barker - Cabal

message 17: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #11 - Scott Lynch - The Lies of Locke Lamora

Brilliant Cosa Nostra style swashbuckling fantasy debut from Lynch.....made me laugh a lot.

message 18: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #12 - Albert Sanchez Piñol - Cold Skin

Quirky little story of the coexistence of two - to each other - alien races.

message 19: by Rasmus (last edited Mar 01, 2010 05:58AM) (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #13 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Man on the Balcony

Another crime for Martin Beck to solve.....and he doesn't like it one little bit.

message 20: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #14 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Laughing Policeman

Nice to be back in business after a very long month of strictly work related reading.

message 21: by Karol (new)

Karol | 186 comments Rasmus wrote: "#14 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Laughing Policeman

Ah, yes. I've "been there, done that" a time or two. Glad you've had some time again recently for recreational reading!

message 22: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #15 - Gene Wolfe - The Shadow of the Torturer

Sublime cutting edge fantasy, but a little too surreal and heavy for my taste theese days. Interesting read still.

message 23: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #16 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Fire Engine That Disappeared

Book 5 in the Martin Beck series.....they're getting better and better.

message 24: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #17 - Erlend Loe - Doppler

Hysterically funny......found myself laughing out quite loudly in the middle of all these people on the train. Doppler with the DICK!

message 25: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #18 - Scott LynchRed Seas Under Red Skies

Second Volume of The Gentleman Bastards. Still swashbuckling, still surprising. And now with pirates! Great read.

message 26: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #19 - Erlend Loe - Volvo Lastvagnar

Mister Doppler is back! Not as far out as the first one, but definitely a worthy sequel.

message 27: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #20 - Stan Nicholls - Legion of Thunder: Orcs First Blood, Book 2

Not enough orcness.....had some moments, but generally quite boring.

message 28: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #21 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - Murder at the Savoy

Yet another Martin Beck story. He's still miserable and hates his job, but at least he gets laid in this one.

message 29: by Karol (new)

LOL!

message 30: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #22 - Adrian Tchaikovsky - Empire in Black and Gold

All right, but not great. A friend of mine told me the series get better. I hope he's right.

message 31: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #23 - Sjöwal & Wahlöö - The Abominable Man

The 7th Martin Beck story and the best so far. When reading these books, one can really see where contemporary scandinavian crimewriters Jo Nesbø and Stieg Larsson come from.

message 32: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #24 - Morten Ramsland - ³§³Ü³¾´Ç²ú°ùø»å°ù±ð

Quirky little story of children growing up in Denmark in the eighties. A rough story of bullying, victimizing and the mysteries of the grown up's world told from a child's point of view.
Reminds me of the feeling in Bjarne Reuter's old children's books.
Great read.

message 33: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #25 - Darren Shan - A Living Nightmare

One of my pupils told me to read this one. Great children's book. A bit darker than most.

message 34: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #26 - Darren Shan - The Vampire's Assistant

message 35: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #27 - Glen Cook - The Black Company

Bloody surreal fantasy.....in the words of Steven Erikson: "It's like reading Vietnam War fiction on peyote". It's dirty, it's hopeless, it's quite confusing at times. But great nonetheless.

message 36: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #28 - Kenneth Bøgh Andersen - Dødens Terning

message 37: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #29 - Kenneth Bøgh Andersen - Den Forkerte Død

3rd volume in Bøgh Andersen's The Great Devil War series. Quite entertaining.

message 38: by Rasmus (last edited Aug 15, 2010 05:37AM) (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #30 - Kenneth Bøgh Andersen - Ondskabens engel

A weak conclusion to the series....

message 39: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #31 - Trudi Canavan - The Ambassador's Mission

Boring.....wouldn't have finished it, if this challenge wasn't haunting me. Don't think I'll make it this year.

message 40: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #32 - Slash - Slash

The mad hatter speaks out. A bit tedious when you get to the umphteenth strung out junkie passage, but still, he's a bloody legend and seems like a genuinely nice person.

message 41: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #33 - Justin Cronin - The Passage

Bloody great read......of doom!

message 42: by Stacie (new)

I really loved this one too... can't wait for the next one to come out! :)

message 43: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #34 - Kevin Crossley-Holland - The Seeing Stone

message 44: by Rasmus (last edited Dec 27, 2010 01:58AM) (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #35 - Knud Holten - Feberfrihed

What a wonderful book from (in my opinion) the best writer of lies and adventure and imaginations. I wish that you were all able to understand the danish language and read this one. A semi-autobiographical acid induced road trip.

Hopefully I'll make halfway to the 75. Perhaps I'll go for 50 in 2011 then.

message 45: by Christy (new)

Christy (christy_t) Too bad it's not available in English. There are so many wonderful books and authors out there that never get translated. It's really a shame.

Good luck making the halfway mark by the end of the year! I'm sure you can do it.

message 46: by Rasmus (last edited Dec 30, 2010 01:23PM) (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #36 - Joe Abercrombie - Best Served Cold

Another foul cunt of a book from the master of violent, dirty and gritty fantasy. Not quite as good as his first trilogy, but a great great read nevertheless.

message 47: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) #37 - Thomas Ligotti - Teatro Grottesco

It takes a twisted mind to.........oh the horror!

message 48: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) Looks like I sort of made it halfway there.....gotta do better in the year of our Book 2011.
