Oh definitely Anna! That book was really great!

message 252: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) oh good. I know I just finished and loved it. Makes me want to learn more about fossils and such.

message 253: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Would The Cement Garden work for the April Showers task? It has Garden in the title, which isn't a flower, but...No biggie if it won't.

message 254: by R (new)

R (feste) I was intending to read Labyrinths for Jules' task (read new authors), but it just struck me that you could possibly find labyrinths/mazes in amusement parks or circuses... so would it work for task 10.1 (Be amused)?

message 255: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'll allow it R. There's the hall of mirrors after all.

message 256: by R (new)

R (feste) Awesome, thanks Lori!

message 257: by paulabits (new)

paulabits (paulabits) I recently read Foe (which is based on Robinson Crusoe) and Friday doesn't have tongue, therefore he is incapable of speech. So it works for task 25.5 a person with a physical disability?

Sounds good to me!

message 259: by paulabits (new)

paulabits (paulabits) Thanks Jamie!

message 260: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) would Anna Karenin count as a group read for 20.1, I know it isn't technically a monthly read but it was voted on. Not a huge deal if you don't want it to count because I'm not even positive that is how I want to use it but just a thought.

message 261: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Annashu, I would say yes because it was a group wide thing, but I'll have to see what Jamie says because the thick read was her deal.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
I'll count that! Good question!

message 263: by paulabits (new)

paulabits (paulabits) Hey, I have some questions here:

Suicide and feminism would count as Ethical Issues?

For 15.10, it has to be fiction/novel or may I use any book about philosophy?

message 264: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Paula,

I think for the Ethical Issue, Jamie wanted something that wasn't quite clear cut. Doctor Assisted Suicide would work. But most people agree that regular suicide is not a good thing. As far as 15.10, I'm not sure what Jamie is wanting.

Agreeing with what Lori said about the ethical issues. If you can find something really controversial within those..like doctor assisted suicide I'll take it.

15.10 can be either..anything relating to philosophy

message 266: by paulabits (new)

paulabits (paulabits) Ok thank you both!.

message 267: by Jess (new)

Jess For 15.10, could a book like The Purity Myth: How America's Obsession with Virginity is Hurting Young Women suffice? It pertains to third-wave feminism.

message 268: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I think that would work because some people preach abstinence and others preach making smart decisions. There's no clear-cut right or wrong about it.

message 269: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Hey I just joined and started the Spring/Summer book reading challenge and I was wondering: If I read a book a couple of weeks, can I use it for the challenge?

message 270: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Any books that you read during the time the challenge starts and ends is fair game! :)

message 271: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Sweet! I was worried it wouldn't count. Thanks :D.

message 272: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Oh, another question! Will there be a Fall/Winter challenge once this one ends?

message 273: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Yes there will be! Tonight or tomorrow I'll be posting a thread for task suggestions!

message 274: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Oh man, time flies!

message 275: by Ali (last edited Jul 28, 2010 07:08PM) (new)

Ali Question: Could Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri work for the medical field challenge? It sounds like the protagonist is a Bengali interpreter in a hospital. Who has read it?

message 276: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I've read it. It is actually a collection of short stories, and it is just the title story that has a doctor's assistant in it (the interpreter).

It's a wonderful book, though. Even if you can't read it for the challenge, I'd recommend that you put it on your to-read list for later.

message 277: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Ali, since medical personnel is only in the first story, I'm going to have to say no. Sorry! (And I apologize for keeping you waiting for so long)

message 278: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Would a book about a girl going crazy because she's being bullied at school count for the mental disability part of 25.5?

message 279: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) wow I just realized that the challenge ends this Sunday...time just goes too fast sometimes

message 280: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen It does???? Holy smokes. I'm in such a slump, I haven't finished anything in a couple of weeks.

I'm right there with you Tahleen!

I did much better on this challenge than on previous ones. Especially counting the dozen or so books I read that weren't on it.

message 283: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Me too Tami! So many books I read didn't count for anything, booo.

message 284: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments I took a break from this challenge but I'm excited for the Fall/Winter challenge!!
