Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I found out this morning that I won a copy of Feast Day Of Fools (Hackberry Holland, #3) by James Lee Burke . I've read several of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux books, but haven't read anything in this series. Looking forward to it! (I was really hoping to win a copy of DARK PASSAGES by Katherine Leigh Scott, but no such luck!)

message 502: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Hmmm--I didn't even see this one--congrats, Melodie. I love his Dave books and didn't know he's doing another series. Make sure to let us know what you think.

I did win a copy of Dark Passages. Will try to remember to let you know how it is when I get it.

Good to know I'm not the only one who hasn't received this yet. I won 4 books recently and this is the only one I haven't received yet. But like you said, it hasn't been a month yet.

message 508: by Katherine (new)

Katherine I haven't received the Archer book yet either, nor have I received Before Versailles. Just as well with this heat, a newly broken leg and a party to prepare for, reading is way down on the priority list. Sigh

Katherine Well, there is this 14 year old cat who loves to run downstairs alongside me--which I hate. On Tuesday evening she cut in front of me on the last two stairs. I tried to avoid stepping on her, successfully, as I toppled onto the floor with my ankle twisted strangely. I probably wouldn't have dropped if I hadn't turned the ankle--but the pain made me just go. And let me tell you the whole thing was a blur. She went running back upstairs to hide, hubby jumped off the couch to winch me up and I slept downstairs with my let elevated. Couldn't stand on it Wed so off to the doctor and xrays--broke the distal fibula--I knew I did but didn't want to believe it. So now I'm limping around with a Frankenstein boot and trying to cook etc for the party Sunday. I'm exhausted and the leg isn't happy. But what can I do--I have all these fresh veggies etc and I can't let them rot. No one to help so I'm muddling along. I actually love cooking but the heat and heavy leg are making me very tired. I'm sleeping well--so there is always a plus side.
Thanks for asking guys--makes it easier --at least I'm not a walking wounded in Iraq or Afganistan--I have it made.

Toni (cherrycherry) | 57 comments I just won my first Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ giveaway! I won Only Mine (Fool's Gold, #4) by Susan Mallery . I haven't read the others in this series, so I hope I'm not lost when I eventually read this one.

Since I'm new to this, can someone point me in the right direction to the First Reads shelf? Is this just about me making a shelf about this or is there a specific location? Thanks.

message 519: by Katherine (new)

Katherine nope--you just make a first reads shelf of your own. And when you write your review you mention that the book waws a first reads book--if you remember whick I don't always!

Congrats,BTW!!!!

It's possible you won't win another book until you read and review your first win. We've been trying to figure out what criteria helps you win and I think reading and reviewing may help.

Oh, and congratulations on your win!

message 521: by Toni (new)

Toni (cherrycherry) | 57 comments Thank you for the replies!

The email I received told me that I'm more likely to win if I post a First Reads review. I wasn't aware that you had a better shot at winning by posting reviews on books you've won. Thought it had more to do with just posting reviews and being active on here in general.

Congrats on your first win, Toni!

There are a lot of different factors that are said to go into picking book winners. Writing a short review is supposed to increase your odds of winning more, though it doesn't always feel like it.

Still haven't won anything here since Easter (and I read and reviewed both books as soon as I got them!), but July seems to be my month for blog contests. I won Summer in the South: A Novel from a book blog earlier this month, and over the weekend won Dracula in Love by Karen Essex from another book blog. Looking forward to reading it!

message 523: by Katherine (new)

Katherine After a few dry days I just won The Killing Song this morning. I keep asking for different genres but seem to get mostly the mysteries--not complaining--I love them all and have been very lucky with the caliber of books I've won. The Killing Song by P.J. Parrish

message 524: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1436 comments Congratulations Katherine!

message 525: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments Katherine, I think one of the things that determines if you win a book are the types of books you've read and marked in GR. So, maybe that's why you win a lot of mysteries. I've actually only won 1 mystery so I wonder how heavily that factor is weighted.

message 526: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Well, I'm in the reading challenge for the year and it is --quite eclectic--I've read over 40 so far --but, recently, in order to read and review as quickly as possible my giveaways, I suppose mysteries are becoming prevalent. LOL Vicious circle I guess! But, as I said in the earlier post, except for two, the books I've received have been excellent.

I won this one too and am really looking forward to her new series.
She quickly became a favorite author of mine with her St Just mystery series. The first, Death of a Cozy Writer A St. Just Mystery by G.M. Malliet , is delightfully witty with nods to readers of cozy mysteries. It won the Agatha for best first mystery.

Pauline | 21 comments Congrats to all who won!

Apparently Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ decided that it would be a good idea to give me four books at the same time. The Oriental Wife by Evelyn Toynton , Dark Passage (Dark Mirror, #2) by M.J. Putney , Leaving the Atocha Station by Ben Lerner and Lights Out in Wonderland by DBC Pierre

Super excited about this occurrance and I'm glad that someone received the Jeffery Archer book. Hopefully I will get that one soon!

I've won four in three YEARS. I'll never understand GRs algorithm. Maybe other's luck will rub off on me. :-)
That's one reason I was so delighted to win a first reads book by a favorite author. I started reading it this weekend and was immediately transported to the English village and smiling at her descriptions of its residents.

message 546: by Katherine (new)
