Devon and Merry from The Windflower

message 208: by Sans (new)

Sans Hello all. I'm Sans and I've never read Old Skool romances before. I've been reading smutty books for a few years now, but none of the bodice ripping variety. There are a few waiting for me at home though, so I hope to start soon. I've been lurking a bit but I haven't read most of the threads yet.

Birthday: 30 June

What did you have for dinner last night?: Couple of cocktails, cheese and crackers

What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now?: I play my iPod while driving and have been listening to Muse, Florence + the Machine, Damien Rice and Patrick Wolf

Favorite childhood memory (briefly): Not coming up with anything at the moment

When/where do you most like to read?: Curled up on the couch after work and on the weekends

First romance novel read (that you can remember): See, I've got a crap memory (hence not being able to remember a good childhood memory) so I couldn't even try to answer this. I know my mum tried to get me to read Christine Feehan's Carpathian series (wasn't able to finish the first book). I think I might have been a Mary Balogh? Or J.R. Ward. Actually, I might have been one of the P&P re-tellings I adore. Regardless, I now have a wall full of smut (no, seriously. An entire wall has been taken over by bookcases).

Favorite romance couple: Good lord. First couple that pop into my head are Darcy and Elizabeth. Did I mention that four shelves on that wall of books are dedicated to P&P re-tellings and continuations?

Why did you decide to join this group?: Since I started reading New Skool smut, I never gave much thought to where the genre originated. I started reading Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches' Guide to Romance Novels and have been curious about these Old Skool beasties. I asked around at a historical romance group for recommendations but no one answered my plea. Then I saw this was a featured group so I thought why wait for some kind soul to take pity on me? I'd rather find some people who won't be judgmental about the more politically incorrect aspects of this genre and welcome my curiosity.

Tutti Dolci (tuttidolci) | 27 comments Hello All! I'm Kasey. It's nice to see some familiar usernames on here. I can already tell that I'm in good company. :)

Anywhoodle...I got my BR start back in my teenage days, and although my take on these books was very different back then, one thing remains the same: I love them.

So...a little about Yours Truly:

Birthday: March 29th.

What did you have for dinner last night?: A Latte.

What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now?: An iPod is always plugged in. My music tastes are very eclectic (Rock, R&B, Classical, Latin), but right now, Sia and Prince are on constant repeat.

Favorite childhood memory (briefly): Summers on a small island with my family.

When/where do you most like to read?: I read at any chance I get. If I have a few minutes of idle time, no matter where I'm at, I pull out my Kindle (or a book, both of which are ALWAYS on hand) and read. But my favorite place? On a comfy chair next to a big window (indirect sunlight is best for reading).

First romance novel read (that you can remember): I simply cannot remember for the life of me. Actually...does Judy Blume's "Forever" count?

Favorite romance couple: Stormfire's Sean & Kit.

Why did you decide to join this group?: I love Bodice Rippers and KNEW that I simply couldn't possibly be alone in that sentiment. So, I sought like-minded peeps and VOILA! Here we all are!

And...That's all folks! :)

First romance novel read (that you can remember): historical romance novel written by Julie Garwood

message 228: by Toni (new)

Toni | 10 comments Introduce yourself. Feel free to skip the questions below if you prefer :)

Birthday:
What did you have for dinner last night?: Veggie Burgers

What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now?: Bollywood Music - Devdas

Favorite childhood memory (briefly): I don’t know about favorite, but in 6th grade I had an assignment to write to an author of a book and I wrote to Beatrice Small, and she wrote back. I think I still have the letter somewhere.

When/where do you most like to read?: Anywhere, but in bed on a rainy day under the blankets.

First romance novel read (that you can remember):
So my absolute first I read it the day after Christmas 1986. I ran out of things to read so I started in on my Grandmother’s books. All I remember is that it was a regency HR with a red headed, violet eyed heroine. I was hooked and I quickly followed with Johanna Lindsey’s Captive Bride and then of course, Sweet Savage Love.

Favorite romance couple: I can’t choose! Steve and Ginny are near and dear to my heart. Mick and Edwina from Ivory’s The Proposition are up there. Sheridan and Olympia from Kinsale’s Seize the Fire perhaps.

Why did you decide to join this group?: OMG! Because I am so tired of these super metrosexual heroes who function as some sort of sexy therapist/support group. I mean my husband is all of those things, but that is why I want to read stories about alpha males who I may find attractive, but in real life I can never date. Because I think fantasy does not always have to be PC. Because I am a feminist who has come to terms with the fact that sometimes the heart and the mind don’t meet and the insidious fact that sometimes "no" does mean "yes" and I do find the ripping of clothes incredibly sexy.

Lets see. Birthday 1/22/1969/ We are the last of the Age of Aquarius. Dinner last night? Hmmm. Hamburgers? No CDs in the car, but I love oldies, 50's and 60's and of course the disco era. Favorite Childhood memory was Christmas of 1976. We went to see the Jessica Lange version of King Kong on christmas night, after dinner at Grandmas, about 20 cousins. God, at Borders, but preferably poolside, or while tanning. First one is easy, Savage Sands, what else? I also love old school 60's and 70's trashy Historical Romance for the covers. Hussein and Catherine, baby, the villain and the heroine. May December all the way. I joined so that I can continue my strange obsession with this novel from 1978. I will draw a poster and a cover art for it, in 2011.

What did you have for dinner last night?: burger

What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now?: mp3 player with constantly changing playlist pertaining to my current writing.

Favorite childhood memory (briefly): Christmas when I got my first dollhouse

When/where do you most like to read?: couch in our kitchen (couch was there when we moved in)

First romance novel read (that you can remember): The Kadin by Bertrice Small. I sneak-read my mom's copy at the tender age of eleven and was hooked. I knew I'd found what I wanted to read and write for the rest of my life.

Favorite romance couple: on principle, Skye and Niall from Skye O'Malley, also by Bertrice Small. Though Carolina and Kells from Valerie Sherwood's Lovesong trilogy rate a close second.

Why did you decide to join this group?:
I love the big, sweeping sagas of the old school romances. While there are good books coming out every day, there's something about the sprawling adventures of the first wave of historicals that speak to me and that I like to weave into my own work.

Jen Birthday: January 18th,1986
What did you have for dinner last night?: Uhm...I think it was....cereal.
What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now?: A mix CD of stuff like the Black Crowes, Schuyler Fisk, and some new-and-can't-remember singers.
Favorite childhood memory (briefly): my parents or siblings taking hold of one of my hands each and going "One...two...three...WEEEEEE" as they pull me up into the air together.
When/where do you most like to read?: I like reading throughout the night, so I don't have to stop and talk to people lol. I have taken to reading on my computer because the local library has been closed for 2 years now. They're very slowly opening it back up. Possibly. I'm kind of mad because the people in charge of this lil dinky town were against opening it up because they'd rather have a liquor store in town than a library.
First romance novel read (that you can remember): Julie Garwood book, not sure which right now
Favorite romance couple: I can't say names, but I like the gruff hero that's either a "beast" (not actual shapeshifter!) or a tortured soul of some sort or another...and a nice but ruined lady that comes and sweeps him out of his gloomy place.
Why did you decide to join this group?: I like the freedom-reigns atmosphere. It's pretty refreshing to not have to have people freak out if I accidentally take the time to type out swear words or something :)

What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now?: I am definitely still an 80's/90's girl LOL
Favorite childhood memory (briefly): Anything that had to do with my easy bake oven! As a teenager it was the weekly Harlequin Book exchange we did in our community.
When/where do you most like to read?: I read everywhere but honestly it is curled up with a glass of wine.
First romance novel read (that you can remember): I don't know my first but I can remember that it was a "harem" romance where the guy took his brothers place to find out who was trying to kill him. In his brothers herem was a woman he fell in love with but they had to work through a lot to get to the HEA.
Favorite romance couple: Jamie and Claire

I'm a paranormal romance author, a former bookseller and Assistant Manager, and I'm the mother of 3 children under the age of 4. My mother got me hooked on reading and my every memory of her was with a book in her hand. She read romance, too, and in the '80's I think the majority of what she read were bodice-rippers. I love reading and romance is my absolute favorite! Like mother, like daughter, I guess! :)

Birthday: March 6, 1978
What did you have for dinner last night?: Roast chicken with pasta salad
What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now?: Depeche Mode
Favorite childhood memory (briefly): Any memory of my mother is a favorite.
When/where do you most like to read?: Anytime/anywhere. I love to read curled up on the sofa in front of a cozy fireplace in the living room. All I need to do now is get a fireplace. :)
First romance novel read (that you can remember): The Romance of the Rose by Claire Delacroix
Favorite romance couple: Jamie and Claire, absolutely! Also, Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester. I love gothic romances, too.
Why did you decide to join this group?: I love talking about books, especially romance. I also like to find recommendations from other avid readers so I can add to my own personal library and reading lists. Did I mention I love to read? :)

What CD/radio station(type of music) is in your car right now? - Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Keane

Favorite childhood memory (briefly) - Attempting to climb a Sassafras tree.

First romance novel read (that you can remember) - Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey

Favorite romance couple - Domenico and Felicia
