April's Group Read Are!!!

Alex wrote: "A few of us have been talking about tackling The Decameron (Boccaccio; my translation is by Musa) in April, if y'all are feeling particularly brave. Category 1."
According the link for the book, it says it does not release until dec'10.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
This book is stacked 12 deep on holds at my local library, so I'd like to know what all the fuss is about.

Thanks, Charity, for letting me know. I'll think about it and change my nomination.
Sad.....I just got a copy of Fool...........

It's my favorite of his. :o)

I haven't participated on the monthly reads for this group but I plan to in April. Elegance of the Hedgehog has been on my to-read list for awhile as has Suite Francaise.

Catagory 2: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde.
Lori, please ignore "Fool" from above as it was a previous selection. Thanks.

I took a class years ago in university about travelogues. Bill Bryson was one of our featured authors, though, at the time he was new. I've always ejoyed his wry wit, and his penchant for finding ordinary people in extroidinary places.

I definitely think this is funny if you are a book lover. Its not so much 'comedian-style' jokes or fart/poop jokes as it is really clever puns and inside jokes absurdities that book people will really appreciate.
I dont know that I ever laughed out loud with any of Ffordes books, but I find them so clever and inane that they are 'fun' to read and am always smiling as
I get a book joke or book reference that not everyone might get.

Cat 1. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

This is the first in the eccentric Amelia Peabody mystery series.

The Postmistress by Sarah Blake

Sad.....I just got a copy of Fool...........
No prob!
Thank you, Charity!
Thanks Charity, It does look good!
I read parts of The Decameron in college. Really good stuff. However, a couple years ago I read Jane Smiley's modern take on it, Ten Days in the Hills, and I wasn't very impressed. BUT, it did make me want to revisit The Decameron. :)

I had thought The Road was a previous group read, but maybe it was just heavily discussed. I see the book on the group bookshelf, but I didn't see it in the group read discussion folder. Maybe my brain is failing me. It's a blonde life.

I really appreciate someone nominating an Amelia Peabody mystery - this is one of my favorite series of all time. I've read every single one. BUT in no way would I classify this as humorous. Its a straight up mystery. Maybe for Category 1? ?

You Suck: A Love Story
or
Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story
Or maybe something by Janet Evanovich...I haven`t read any but I was told they are funny. Like One for the Money

I have it on my "funny" shelf because it is written in such tongue-in-cheek style. Even the "editorial introductions" are all in fun. I don't think I've made it through any of the books without giggling aloud.

Yes, Charity, even though it wasnt nominated in, it got treated as a group read becuase of the heavy discussion for it. So it won't be counted as a nomination. Thanks for pointing that out.
Jen, are you nominating one of those books, or just asking if other people want to consider nominating? Your post is confusing, as you are only allowed ONE nomination.

Mary, dont forget to list the author in your post, or it wont be accepted. I need to be able to cut and paste it directly. Thanks.

We will have two catagories this month:
Cat1- Regular Fiction/Non-Fiction
Cat2- Humorous novel, or novel written by comedian (in honor of April Fools Day)
Only ONE nomination per person.
If you nominate a book for catagory 1, you CANNOT nominate a book for catagory 2, and visa versa.
Please be sure to post the title, author, and the catagory it belongs to.
If your post does not have those three things, it will not be counted.
Are you ready?
I will accept nominations through Saturday morning. If we get tons of nominations, I may pull the plug on it a little early, so get them in as soon as you can!
Once I close nominations I will create the polls and let you know when it is time to vote!
Hit us with your best noms!
