Joanie | 103 comments This is the first book in the series, followed by Big Cherry Holler and Milk Glass Moon. I think there is one more that's related but I haven't read that one.

It took me a little bit to get into this book but then I was totally hooked. It's the story of Ave Maria, a single girl in a small town. The characters are fantastic, the story line is great. I loved the whole series which continues the story of Ave.

Melissa I just read this book because of this list. I loved it. Great subtle humor with a wonderful story that makes it a hard book to put down. I liked all the characters and liked the author's writing style. I will be sure to continue the series!

Tracy This book ended up surprising me. It seemed a little slow at the beginning, and that was OK because I was enjoying meeting all the characters.

I can't wait to read Big Cherry Holler (I didn't cheat and read the first chapter that was included at the end of Big Stone Gap because I knew I'd be hooked and go crazy because I don't have the full book yet). I hope all the same characters are in Big Cherry Holler. I love them all!

Spoilers from here on...

Then, even thought I really like Ave, and wish I live in Big Stone Gap so I could be friends with her, I started to become frustrated with her because she was rejecting Jack Mac. I wasn't sure if I could finish the book if she was going to carry a torch for Theodore for the rest of the story. I mean, come ON! Wake up girl!! But everything turned out right in the end. I love it when that happens.

KrisT Lots of quirky characters in this that reminded me of Stephanie Plum but more sane!
