5.1 - Heat Wave
It's summertime and it's getting HOT out there..Read a book with one of the following words in the title (Hot, Hotter, Heat, Warm, Warmth, Heatwave, Fire, Sizzle, Blaze, Scorch, Sun, Sunny, Toasty or another similar word). (EXAMPLE: Heat Wave)

5.2 - Blockbuster Books
There are many highly anticipated films that will be hitting the theaters this summer (i.e. Eclipse, Toy Story 3, The A-Team, Eat Pray Love and many others)...For this task read a book that relates to the film you are most looking forward to seeing this summer (EXAMPLE: For Eat Pray Love you could read the book that is the basis for the film Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia or another travel memoir such as Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven.) (You do not actually have to see the film to get credit for this task.)

5.3 - S.U.M.M.E.R
For this task read a book written by an author whose initials are found in the word Summer. (Initials must be sequential i.e. SU, UM, MM, ME, ER, and RS not SM).

5.4 - Lesser Known Awards
We all know the big names in book awards (Pulitzer, Man Booker, Hugo, Newbery etc.) but there are a lot of lesser known book awards out there and lucky for us Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has a list of them. Go to this link (Awards) and: Read a book found on the list of winners and nominees for an award you had previously never heard of. (From the foreign language awards you may read a translation if it is available).

5.5 - Dropping Names
If you visit the following webpage Authors We Read This Spring you will find a list of authors that were mentioned in the completed task posts for the spring challenge (only linked authors are included in this list). Find an author on this list that you haven't read previously and read their most popular book. (The author's most popular work is the one listed first on their profile).

5.6 - "I Only Regret That I Have But One Life To Lose For My Country."
Nathan Hale (June 6, 1755 � September 22, 1776) was a soldier for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and is widely considered America's first spy. In memory of this famous patriot read a book with a main character who is a spy or where espionage plays an important role in the plot. (EXAMPLE: The Tourist)

5.7 - "I Confess That In 1901 I Said To My Brother Orville That Man Would Not Fly For Fifty Years. "
On August 8, 1908 Wilbur Wright made his first flight at a racecourse at Le Mans, France. It was the Wright Brothers' first public flight. In honor of this important event in transportation history...Read a book (fiction or non-fiction) that has a mode of travel pictured on the cover..i.e. airplane, boat, train, car etc.

5.9 - Get Caught Reading
There is an age old saying...If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Likewise if a person reads a book and no one is there to see them...did the book ever get read? For this task you must read a book of at least 100 pages in public...at a park, or the beach, or on a plane, or a bus, or at a library...any public place will do.

5.10 - "If One Cannot Enjoy Reading A Book Over And Over Again, There Is No Use In Reading It At All." - Oscar Wilde

The Place - Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. The Time - Whenever is convenient for you. For this task you will need to discover who is visiting Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ at the same time you are and what they are reading. Go to Online Now, click on page 6,7, or 8 and select one of the books that these fellow Goodreaders are currently reading to read for this task. You can visit the pages as often as you like.

10.4 - Roll The Dice...
Do you feel lucky...are the dice on your side? For this task you will need to visit the website (). The amount shown on the dice (+/- 10) will be the amount of pages that you will need to read for this task. I.E. if you rolled a 3,5,2 you would need to read a book between between 342 and 362 pages long (EXAMPLE: Son of a Witch (Wicked Years, #2)). You can only click on the link one time.

10.5 - If You Can't Go To The Beach...Bring The Beach To You
The economy is down and many people can't afford to take a summer vacation away from home. So logically if you can't go away you have to bring the destination to you and since the beach is probably the most popular destination for summer travelers that's what we'll do for this task by...Reading a book that has a beach scene on the cover.

On June 8, 1992 the first World Ocean Day is celebrated; coinciding with the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To commemorate this event let's read a book that has an ocean animal in the title (whales, dolphins, sharks etc.). (EXAMPLE: Songs of the Humpback Whale)

10.9 - “You Cannot Open A Book Without Learning Something.� - Confucius
School may be out for summer but that doesn't mean you have to stop learning. For this task you will need to select a subject that you would like to learn more about (it can be any subject from history to cars to photography). Then you will need to read...

10.10 - Great Minds Think Alike
For this task we will find out if this saying is true when in comes to reading preferences. Go to the individual page for the last book you gave a 5 star rating to (i.e. if the last book you rated 5 stars was The Help by Kathryn Stockett you would go to this page The Help). Scroll down to the section for other reviews and click on the link for 5 stars...then click on the link to organize the list by date. Once you do that you will need to click on page 6,7, or 8 (if the book you use does not have that many pages of 5 stars use page 1-3) and select a person. Visit that persons profile and select another book (one that you haven't read before) that they gave 5 stars to and that will be the book you need to read for this challenge task.

15 POINT TASKS
15.1 - Wedding Bells Are Ringing
June is one of the most popular months for weddings and weddings as we all know are full of traditions. One of the most commonly followed of those traditions is for the bride to have "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue" on her wedding day. To honor that tradition...

A. OLD - Read an old book (to qualify as an old book it must have been published before you were born).
AND
B. NEW - Read a book written by a new author i.e. a book by an author you haven't read previously.

BORROWED - One of the books above must be borrowed (from the library, from a friend or family member etc.)
BLUE - And the other book must either have a blue cover or the word blue in the title.

(I.E. You need to read an old book that is borrowed and a new book that is blue OR an old book that is blue and a new book that is borrowed.)

15.2 - Stars And Stripes Forever
In honor of America's Independence Day (July 4th)...
A. Stars - Each star on the American flag stands for one of the 50 states in the nation...Read a book that has the name of a U.S. state in the title (EXAMPLE: Gods in Alabama)
AND
B. Stripes - Each of the 13 stripes on the American flag stands for one of the original 13 colonies (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island)...Read a book that takes place in one of these states (EXAMPLE: Most of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books take place in New Jersey)

For this task you must use a different state for part A and part B.

15.3 - Books And Blogs
Blogs have an important role in the world of books and reading today...they've even been the inspiration for books themselves (EXAMPLE: Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen). For this task read a book that has been featured on your favorite book/reading related blog. When you post this task include a link to the blog and a review of the book.

15.4 - Learn Your Numbers
Numerology is any of many systems, traditions or beliefs in a mystical or esoteric relationship between numbers and physical objects or living things. For this task we will need to go to this website and enter your First and Last name to find your magic number. Once you know your number you will need to read...
A. A book written by an author who has the same number as you. (EXAMPLE: My number is 6 and so is Joanna Trollope)
AND
B. A novel where a character demonstrates one or more of the characteristics of your number (EXAMPLE: 6's characteristics are...Responsibility, protection, nurturing, community, balance, sympathy...so I could read a book about a police officer or soldier because their duty is to protect.) Include a short explanation of how the character matches the characteristics in your post. A sentence or two would be sufficient.

Summertime is often the time when families get together to catch up on things so for this task let's read....
A. A book that has the word Family in the title (EXAMPLE: The Swiss Family Robinson) OR a book with a specific family member in the title i.e. Sister, Brother, Cousin etc. (EXAMPLE: The Grandmothers)

B. Tell the group at least one thing that you love about your own family or the family member from your title.

20 POINT TASKS
20.1 - The Most Improved Player - Deirdre's Task - Sweltering Summer Days
When I think of a hot summer day, I think of one of my favorite junk foods: ICE CREAM! Think of the name of your favorite ice cream, and read a book whose title contains at least one of the words from the ice cream name. For example, my favorite ice cream is White Chocolate Almond, so I could read The Devil in the White City , Like Water for Chocolate, The Almond Picker: A Novel, or White Chocolate Moments. The word in the book title should exactly match the word in the ice cream title, so I could NOT read Chocolat. When you claim points, tell us what your favorite ice cream flavor is!

20.2 - Rookie Of The Season - Kiri's Task - A Trip To The Past
Ahhh Summer...Sun...Swimming...Travel...Vacation! Or more likely a staycation for some of us in these tough economic times. Who cares.. we have BOOKS! And one of the best things about books is that they can take us anyplace or for the purposes of this task...ANYWHEN! For this task you need to read a book that was either written OR takes place before 1450 AD. (Translations and Re-Tellings are acceptable).

20.3 - Best Review Contest - Amanda VA's Task - School May Be Out
School may be out, but that doesn't mean we all have to read fluff all summer! Do some serious reading and select and complete one of the following options...

A.Read a Victorian Novel, which is one published during the reign of Queen Victoria of England, which was from 1837 to 1901 (EXAMPLE: North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell or Bleak House by Charles Dickens)
OR
B.Read at least 350 pages of works by any of the authors from the St. John's College Reading List, from any year. Note that you don't have to read the exact work on the list, and you don't have to read all 350 pages from the same author. You can find the list here:


20.4 - Always The Bridesmaid, Never The Bride - Shelley's Task - Anniversary Gift
Summer is the time for weddings, which means that it is also the time for anniversaries. Use this list of anniversary gifts to find the traditional or modern gift that corresponds to the number of seasonal challenges that you have participated in (including this summer challenge).

Part B does not have to be the language that is spoken in Part A.

25.4 - Nicole OH's Task - Happy Birthday to Me!
In honor of my (Nicole's) July 10th birthday:

A. Read a book by a writer who is a Cancer (June 21-July 22)
AND
B. Read a book that has a NOUN in the title. This noun MUST appear on page 31 of your Part A book (I am turning 31 this summer).

Example: I can read Decreation by Anne Carson (who was born June 21st). The NOUN "husband" appears on page 31 of that book. So for my second book I can read Husband and Wife by Leah Stewart.

25.5 - Helen's Task - Share the Summer Love
For all us booklovers, summer is a great time of year to relax with our favorite reads. In this task, share your love of your favorites with us. Read two (2) books:

A. One from your favorite genre/type.
B. One from your second favorite genre/type.
C. Write a short review for each and an explanation of why your like that genre/type.

Note: This is free form. You can define the genre/type however you want. Just share it with us when you post. For example:

For A, I (Helen) love historical fiction so will probably read An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon. I love being able to live history through the eyes of a strong character. It makes the time period and the events more real.

For B, I love SciFi/Fantasy and will probably read To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. The ability to see beyond current reality and describe those visions in book form is incredible. I am sampling some of the older Hugo Award winners.

25.6 - Ashley FL'S Task - "Summer Lovin"
"Everyone has songs that make them think of summer. Pick one of your favorite summer songs and read a book related to it. It can be related in one of the following ways:

A. Singer or songwriter or member of the band wrote the book. OR
B. Biography or autobiography of the singer or songwriter or member of the band. OR
C. Book has the same topic as the song (this needn't be exact, but should be pretty close). OR
D. Title of the book is also lyrics in the song.

When you claim points for this task, please identify the song, the connection to the book, and you must say why it reminds you of summer.

(Example: The song "One Particular Harbor" by Jimmy Buffett is one of my (Ashley's) favorite summer songs. So I (Ashley) might read A Salty Piece of Land (a novel by Jimmy Buffett), A Pirate Looks at Fifty (an autobiographical memoir), One Particular Harbor (book has same title as song), Too Much Stuff: De-cluttering Your Heart And Home ("too much stuff" is a significant phrase in the song), or any book about someone domesticated after years of wandering the world (same theme as the song).

Books may be fiction or non-fiction, but not children's books or juvenile fiction."

For this task you will need to read...

In honor of the tooth fairy, read one or more books (totaling at least 400 pages) of fairy tales, books based on traditional fairy tales (EXAMPLE: Snow White And Rose Red by Patricia C. Note: The books are two distinct categories, so therefore do not need to be related at all.

30.2 - PJ Read's Task - As Suggested By Shannon South Africa - For The Children
The Summer Challenge starts on 1 June, and 1 June 2010 is International Children's Day.
A.Read a children’s classic book (EXAMPLE: Peter Pan) AND either pass it on, or recommend it to a child (give details when you claim your points).
AND
B. Read any book where a child is the main character. (EXAMPLE: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie)
Both books must be at least 100 pages.

OR
C. Chicago is famous for talk show host Oprah Winfrey: Read something from her book club picks over the years.

30.4 - Cheryl TX's Task - The Science Of Crime
For this task you will need to read two medical or forensic thrillers/mysteries...one by a male author (EXAMPLE: No Certain Rest: A Novel) AND one by a female author (EXAMPLE: Harvest).

30.5 - DLM Rose's Task - Virtual Block Party
Summer in my (DLM Rose's) neighborhood means potluck barbecues where each family brings a dish to share.
Identify your signature dish - it can be a food or beverage (someone needs to bring the margaritas!)
Choose 2:
A. Read a fiction book with a food or beverage in the title - the item could be the dish itself
Lemon Meringue Pie Murder or or an ingredient in your dish such as Lime Tree Can't Bear Orange: A Novel (for those margaritas!).
B. Read a novel with recipes (EXAMPLE:Like Water for Chocolate).
C. Read a food-related non-fiction book (non-cookbook). (EXAMPLE: The End of Food)
D. Read a cookbook related to your dish. (EXAMPLE: Margaritas, Mojitos & More)
