30.4 - Cheryl TX's Task - The Science Of Crime

Cold Burn by Max Allan Collins. Mr. Collins writes a lot of CSI novels.
This won't work as a thriller or mystery but nonfiction wise, it looks really interesting. Bodies We've Buried: Inside the National Forensic Academy, the World's Top CSI Training School

Are any of these books you guys have mentioned NOT related to serial killers? Serial killers give me nightmares.....

Funny you say that because I had a nightmare the other night about a serial killer - from a combination of watching the movie Frequency & trying to pick out books for this task. I'm a wuss about things like this & am definitely nervous about this task. I would also love any recommendations for books that are on the side closer to "non-scary." :)

I think we are in big need of clarification regarding this task, by either Cheryl or Cynthia.
By Forensic/Medical mystery, are we talking only the mysteries that revolve around medical examiners, etc? Or are books related to forensics in general allowed? For instance, In the Woods follows two detectives trying to solve a crime. They are not MEs, but they rely heavily on forensics to solve their case. Earlier I had also mentioned House Rules by Jodi Picoult. This is obviously not your typical Patricia Cornwell novel, but Forensic Science is a huge theme of the book.
I think once we officially know what the parameters of the task are, we'll be better able to come up with books to read/recommend.

At least I hope so, and if thats not the case they might have to take forensics out of the task wording. But I really hope In the Woods works cause I want to read it really bad.

I hope you're able to. I really liked In the Woods, and I loved her second book The Likeness: A Novel even more.
I'm really hoping to be able to read Tethered: A Novel. Even though the description is vague (it's a mystery after all), I think it would end up fitting. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Me to cause I requested it from the library and it came in today. Does anybody know Cheryl's story? Is Cynthia going to mod this task?

I sent Cheryl a message this morning. Hopefully we will hear from her soon.

I've also had Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs on the seasonal lists for a while- so hopefully this time I will get it read!

Heather in KS

Thanks!

I am so sorry to be so late on answering your questions. I can accept all of the great examples that you all submitted except that Misery by Stephen King downs't appear to be a forensic or medical mystery. If I can find it on a list I will accept it or you can state your case for including it and I will consider it.

yes Liz this will work since it involves the psychiatric hospital

The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker would work because of the psychiatric setting and profiling with the FBI
and Dean Koontz has an awful lot out there. It needs to have some kind of forensic or medical mystery or thrill about it.

Clarification according to me is that Forensics MUST be used to solve a crime or the medical part couls be someone that is in the medical field accused of the crime, committed the crime or solved the crime. It is really a broad category. You seem to be making it too restricting

I don't see the connection Jackie, sorry no

yes Mandy according to my search all the books except Misery were accepted

The Bottoms will only work if the crime is solved using Forensics or if medical personnel was the killer. Just being about a serial killer does not qualify

I don't think this one fits the category Jennifer, sorry

I cannot find a connection with this request either, Cait. Sorry, No

That's fine. Like I said, I didn't know if it would fit and didn't expect to find out until I had read it. I'll read it for the must-read task instead, and in the event that it ends up fitting the criteria I'll message you for reconsideration.

This, though, I honestly do not understand. Why does this not work?

That was my first thought; however, she said she didn't see the connection, which to me sounds more like there is no connection between In Cold Blood and forensics. That's what I don't get.
Cheryl, my apologies in advance. I'm not being difficult - I swear! :o)

Sorry - you're right. Put this in the wrong thread.

Thanks for understanding Cait

I understand what you are saying but there is ni idication in my research that it is a forensic or medical thriller/mystery. It is a mystery but not what I am looking for. Sorry

I work in a field of forensic science and basically it is any science that has to do with the legal system. We work on vehicle forensic science for automobile accidents.
Technical definition - Forensic science (often shortened to forensics) is the application of a broad spectrum of sciences to answer questions of interest to a legal system.
Cheryl - Do you just mean murder/body forensics? or can it be a wider scope?
