Felina | 0 comments Shutter Island is excellent.

I work in a field of forensic science and basically it is any science that has to do with the legal system. We work on vehicle forensic science for automobile accidents.

Technical definition - Forensic science (often shortened to forensics) is the application of a broad spectrum of sciences to answer questions of interest to a legal system.

Cheryl - Do you just mean murder/body forensics? or can it be a wider scope?

Liz M Has anyone tried sending Cheryl a private message asking her to check in & answer questions?

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments Are there any books which are the Waking the Dead tv series does anyone know? I love that series and it a forensic detective one so should fit!

message 54: by Usako (last edited May 25, 2010 01:22PM) (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments There's a ton of CSI fan fiction books which would work for the forensic science tasks!

Cold Burn by Max Allan Collins. Mr. Collins writes a lot of CSI novels.

This won't work as a thriller or mystery but nonfiction wise, it looks really interesting. Bodies We've Buried: Inside the National Forensic Academy, the World's Top CSI Training School

Are any of these books you guys have mentioned NOT related to serial killers? Serial killers give me nightmares.....

Funny you say that because I had a nightmare the other night about a serial killer - from a combination of watching the movie Frequency & trying to pick out books for this task. I'm a wuss about things like this & am definitely nervous about this task. I would also love any recommendations for books that are on the side closer to "non-scary." :)

message 57: by Jay (new)

Jay (jaydek) | 58 comments I just finished listening to Secrets of Eden: A Novel by Chris Bohjalian and I did not find it TOO gory, and it's definitely not about a serial killer. It is, however, a story about domestic violence and a suicide-murder in a small town, so it does talk about some unpleasant details. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and gave it 4 stars. The audiobook was especially great if anybody here prefers those to reading!

message 58: by Usako (last edited May 26, 2010 12:50PM) (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Sara <3, you might try the Monk book series based on the TV series. There's a good element of humor and not every book is based on a serial killer. Such as this one doesn't seem to be serial killerish -- Mr. Monk in Trouble

Elizabeth (Alaska) I thought this task was about forensics, or criminal science, not just about investigating a crime.

message 60: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Monk uses forensics (criminal science) and other sleuth techniques to solving cases so it goes hand in hand.

message 61: by Sara (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments I, being grossly unfamiliar with this genre, could use clarification on what exactly a "medical or forensic thriller/mystery" is...

message 62: by Jay (new)

Jay (jaydek) | 58 comments I don't want to give it away, but Secrets of Eden relies heavily on forensics to figure out what happened.

message 63: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "I thought this task was about forensics, or criminal science, not just about investigating a crime."

I think we are in big need of clarification regarding this task, by either Cheryl or Cynthia.

By Forensic/Medical mystery, are we talking only the mysteries that revolve around medical examiners, etc? Or are books related to forensics in general allowed? For instance, In the Woods follows two detectives trying to solve a crime. They are not MEs, but they rely heavily on forensics to solve their case. Earlier I had also mentioned House Rules by Jodi Picoult. This is obviously not your typical Patricia Cornwell novel, but Forensic Science is a huge theme of the book.

I think once we officially know what the parameters of the task are, we'll be better able to come up with books to read/recommend.

message 64: by Felina (last edited May 26, 2010 03:48PM) (new)

Felina | 0 comments It says medical OR forensic and like I said in message 51, that would have to include In the Woods because forensics is any science used to answer questions pertaining to the legal system (or a crime). I don't think they have to be a ME per se but they do have to be doing something with science not just sleuthing around and gathering clues. Somebody has to bust out a chemistry set. :)

At least I hope so, and if thats not the case they might have to take forensics out of the task wording. But I really hope In the Woods works cause I want to read it really bad.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments What would G.H. Ephron work as... a male or female because it seems to be a husband, wife partnership.

I hope you're able to. I really liked In the Woods, and I loved her second book The Likeness: A Novel even more.

I'm really hoping to be able to read Tethered: A Novel. Even though the description is vague (it's a mystery after all), I think it would end up fitting. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Me to cause I requested it from the library and it came in today. Does anybody know Cheryl's story? Is Cynthia going to mod this task?

I sent Cheryl a message this morning. Hopefully we will hear from her soon.

message 69: by Kim (new)

Kim | 119 comments I think I'll pick a book by Jeffrey Deaver for this challenge. I had a set which are still on the shelf and would like to read another one.

I've also had Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs on the seasonal lists for a while- so hopefully this time I will get it read!

Thanks!

message 76: by Valorie (new)

message 77: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (eagle1964) | 270 comments Liz wrote: "Has anyone tried sending Cheryl a private message asking her to check in & answer questions?"

I am so sorry to be so late on answering your questions. I can accept all of the great examples that you all submitted except that Misery by Stephen King downs't appear to be a forensic or medical mystery. If I can find it on a list I will accept it or you can state your case for including it and I will consider it.

message 78: by Liz (last edited Jun 07, 2010 09:53AM) (new)

Liz Cheryl, even Blindness works? I know some people weren't sure if it would count or not. It's definitely a medical mystery, but not sure if it's the kind you'd consider okay for this task? If it is, that's what I'll read.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments does anything by Ted Dekker work??? What about Dean Koontz??

yes Liz this will work since it involves the psychiatric hospital

message 81: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (eagle1964) | 270 comments Sarah wrote: "does anything by Ted Dekker work??? What about Dean Koontz??"

The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker would work because of the psychiatric setting and profiling with the FBI

and Dean Koontz has an awful lot out there. It needs to have some kind of forensic or medical mystery or thrill about it.

Liz Thanks Cheryl!

message 85: by Cait (new)

Clarification according to me is that Forensics MUST be used to solve a crime or the medical part couls be someone that is in the medical field accused of the crime, committed the crime or solved the crime. It is really a broad category. You seem to be making it too restricting

The Bottoms will only work if the crime is solved using Forensics or if medical personnel was the killer. Just being about a serial killer does not qualify

That's fine. Like I said, I didn't know if it would fit and didn't expect to find out until I had read it. I'll read it for the must-read task instead, and in the event that it ends up fitting the criteria I'll message you for reconsideration.

message 96: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments I think In Cold Blood didn't work b/c that's a true crime novel and Cheryl was looking for fictional mysteries/thrillers?

message 97: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments Tanja wrote: "I think In Cold Blood didn't work b/c that's a true crime novel and Cheryl was looking for fictional mysteries/thrillers?"

That was my first thought; however, she said she didn't see the connection, which to me sounds more like there is no connection between In Cold Blood and forensics. That's what I don't get.

Cheryl, my apologies in advance. I'm not being difficult - I swear! :o)

I understand what you are saying but there is ni idication in my research that it is a forensic or medical thriller/mystery. It is a mystery but not what I am looking for. Sorry
