This is a group effort to creat a scale of Bad Boyness from 1 to 10. 10 is the ultimate, 1 is the lowest.

Please make your suggestions, and I will create a master post, as we add them to the scale. In order to be on this scale, 1 has some degree of dangerous, although it's lower.

For example: 1=fairly mild-mannered for a Bad Boy/Dangerous Hero. Becomes lethal with intense stimulus. Will go from Clark Kent to Red-K Superman with enough cause.

If it works best, I may have an unofficial poll for the master list.

Note: Please keep comments positive. If you don't like someone's suggestion, we don't need you to tell us that. Just make a suggestion you do like.

Dangerous Hero Scale
10:Completely lethal, seemingly remorseless, has no problem killing to get the job done, or killing as the job. Killing someone doesn't phase him. It's either him or them and don't let someone be after someone he loves. More or less amoral-except when it comes to things that have true value to him (like his heroine or his family). The mission is all that matters to him (at least until he falls for his heroine).
9:Not the guy to mess with. He has few boundaries he won't cross.
8:He can be ruthless. Not above doing almost anything for self-promotion. Has and will betray those close to him if needed. He has a code, but it's his own code--not necessarily in line with established laws, rules, or mores.
7:Most people would probably consider him insane or crazy, or just kinda whacked in the head. A scary guy.
6:Ruthless to get the job done, or to get what he wants/needs/or to protect others.
5:A hero who still has the aura of a bad boy, but is more laid back and open and not necessarily quite as ruthless. Any hero who has stalkerific tendencies is automatically a 5. He's not the type that is completely unpredictable.
4:He has shown that those who mistake him for a ordinary, nice guy are wrong. He'll surprise you!
3:He will do 'bad' things for reasons he feels is necessary, and not feel too much regret about it. He has no problem claiming, kidnapping, or taking his heroine when the situation calls for it.
2:Slightly more volatile than a 1. Most of the time he is very well behaved, you just don't want to get him riled up!
1:mild-mannered most of the time, but when his fuse gets lit, watch out. He becomes the most dangerous man in the room.

Oh, I like you rating your guys, but can you suggest what qualities make a guy each rating?

For instance, why is Bones a 10? If you can give me general traits, I can add them to the master list. Does that make sense?

Here are a few of my suggestions:

10=completely lethal, seemingly remorseless, has no problem killing to get the job done, or killing as the job.
1=mild-mannered most of the time, but when his fuse gets lit, watch out. He becomes the most dangerous man in the room.

Reno = 10. Killing someone doesn't phase him. It's either him or them and don't let someone be after someone he loves, like Jilly. He will most definitely kill someone.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments I would agree Bones is a 10 he is definately remorseless and lethal, I love his whol kick em when they are down attitude.

At the other end of the scale I would say Rydstrom is a 1 or 2 as most the time he is very well behaved, you just don't want to get him riled up! The same goes for Phury from Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Curran from the Kate Daniels series (who I love and is actually all MINE!) I would say he was inbetween at about a 5 as he has got a certain badass attitude, but I don't think he is as ruthless as Bones.

Ummmm who else... I would say Ilya Prenski from Christine Feehans Drake Sisters series (I have spelt his surname very wrong I think) would be a 9 or 10 as well.

Right I am going to stop now or I will ramble on forever about every character I have ever read!

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments Okay, I'm not too conversant with the heroes mentioned here (none of them books where I live, boo hoo!) so this is my scale thing:

James Bond (the Daniel Craig portrayal, original Ian Fleming spook) - 10. He's ruthless, lethal, apparently cold and determined but a woman can move his heart too. He's also got that unpredictable streak, like he's there sitting with a martini in his suit and tie like a gentleman and then wham, he's hauling the bloke opposite him through a wall or something.

Does that work, Danielle?

Okay, so I do have a description for 10. I'll add that to the list. What about the others. What is a five to you, Suzanne?

I would say that being 'stalkerific', even if the hero is otherwise normal, makes him at least a 5 from the get-go.

If he kidnaps the heroine for any reason, he should at least be a 3.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments I think a 5 to me is someone who still has the aura of a bad boy, but is more laid back and open and not necessarily quite as ruthless. Ummm it is hard to describe what I mean lol

I think most heroes in PNR are stalkerific, especially the fated mate ones, which straight away puts all of Kresley Coles heroes to a 5 lol

I would put Rapheal from Nalini Singhs Angels Blood as a 10 he is cold!

message 13: by Jessa EvilDarkSide (last edited May 26, 2010 05:19PM) (new)

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) Eric Northman- 8 (before Dead in the Family...I would give him a 3 for his performance in DITF, LOL!)

He can be ruthless. Not above doing almost anything for self-promotion. Has and will betray those close to him if needed.

Any other thoughts?

message 14: by Zee (new)

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments A 5 to me would be an edge of bad boy, but he doesn't have that unpredictable factor that makes a 10. He's got the potential to be bad, but he's, say, a broker who can play on a reckless deal once or twice, as opposed to one (10) who'd be playing the biggest shots almost every time for the adrenalin rush.

Makes sense?

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments Yes that is a very good description.

I would agree that Eric Northman is an 8. I think that Bill would be around a 3 or 4 as he doesn't really seem that much of a bad boy but he can be ruthless when needed.

Okay, I've looked at your excellent suggestions and added them into our master scale. Keep them coming, ladies! I'm excited about this. Not sure what that says about me. LOL. Thanks!

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments I have a few more lol

Jack Devlin from Suddenly You I would say is a 3 he is a tortured hero after what he went through at that school, but he never does anything truly dangerous in the book, it all more self deustructive, but he does have that bad boy edge.

Should paranormal heroes be on a seperate scale do you think as they always seem more aggressive and bad boyish then say historical heroes. Like Phury from BDB he always gives the impression of being a gentleman, so he doesn't ooze bad boy, but then he starts torturing lessers before he kills them which scream bad boy! Lol I have been thinking about this far too much me thinks!

I think they can fit on the standard scale, but they might rank higher, don't you think?

Any ideas for 4 and 6?

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments I think St Vincent is a 6 or 7, he is a 4 straight away for me just for kidnapping Lily, and ofcourse he just oozes bad boy, lol you just know he is going to do bad bad things to you...and you are going to enjoy every minute. he is also very ruthless and I think he would do many things to get what he wants, but I think he would have a limit.

I am trying to think of a 4 maybe one of the guys from teh Troubleshooter series, they are all ruthless in regards to being a SEAL, and they can be bad ass, but they are normally quite laid back. So Sam maybe.

message 21: by Zee (new)

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments 6 makes me think of a 'normal' FBI agent. Will uphold the law at all times but there can happen when he'll bring push to shove to get the job done, usually to save someone.

♡Meme♡Reads love♡ | 203 comments Zsadist is a 10 all the way it definitely describes him. Shoot the first two pgs in his book explains it all.

message 23: by Akaria (new)

Akaria Gale | 59 comments For the Demonica brothers...

Dr. E: 1 or 2. Don't let the brains fool you. He might be a healer but do not threaten Tay, his brothers or the hospital. He can get lethal on you real quick.

Shade: 5. He might be at his brothers' throats a lot but you don't want him on your bad side. He's more aggressive than Dr. E but not off the charts psycho like the other two brothers.

Wraith: 10. He could kill you and you wouldn't see him coming. His brothers can barely control him and he actually likes them. You can take him or leave him but he ain't changing for no one...except Selena.

Lore: 8. Dude is a contract killer. He's straight up scary. He has a certain code of honor but his brothers certainly don't think of him as honorable. He'll do anything for his sister. Anything.

Mollie *scoutrmom* (scoutrmom) | 635 comments I'm reading the latest from Feehan, our hero Lev Prakensky is definitely a 10. He's almost killed our heroine twice, and I've just started the book. Does sociopathic sound like an adjective we'd like to use here?

Yes, it's fascinating to watch the author reveal that he is puzzled by these emotions he's beginning to have.

definitly

Mollie *scoutrmom* (scoutrmom) | 635 comments If anyone wants to know what I thought of Water Bound, you could check out my review but it's full of spoilers. Lev starts out as a sociopathic 10 and turns into an overprotective violent teddy bear.
