do you need silence to write?
I have music playing to get me in the mood.

It doesn't matter much, but I definitly prefer silence.

I prefer silence as well...although really haven't tried writing with music, but the genre that I write in there isn't much music available to get me in the mood so I decline to just plain silence :)

I'm fairly good at shutting out the world, within limits. Loud noises, especially insistent ones, make it difficult for me to concentrate, but that aside I can write accompanied by silence, speech, cafe conversation, weather or music.

I prefer silence. I start listening and enjoying what is going on around me instead of writing if I have any noise.

I find that being in a center of activity, or someplace where I have sensory stimulation, brings on a flood of ideas, so I take copious notes. It does not turn into anything beautifully poetic until I'm on my own later, however. I have a playlist on my iTunes that is titled "writing" because it is particularly suited to stimulating said activity. :-)

I even used the first verse of the Who's Baba O'Riley - in My latest novel. I will have to check for permissions on this before I publish though.

I have music that I just love from quiet to rockin.

It's very rare that I do anything in silence. While doing the dishes, I've got music on. While reading, I've got the TV to keep me company - background noise mostly. I have difficulty writing when the kids are running around... when it gets silent, I know they're up to no good but it takes me a while to figure that out when I'm engrossed in what I'm doing. Since my husband was on full time nights for 5 and a half years (40 hours a week), the TV or music always kept me company and I got used to it, especially when writing. Sometimes music just helps with the flow. Now I prefer it - but after a particularly hard day, I'll take an hour to read with nothing on. Just to get a little peace...

It depends.

If I really want to focus, I'll sometimes wear headphones--or even earplugs and headphones--so that I'm not distracted from what I'm doing.

However, when I'm not that focused, I generally have my favorite country music station playing in the background.

cool I like country. I just don't like the old sappy stuff.

Nothing like a good rocking country tune or classic rock to get the juices flowing.

Yeah, I'm not much on the old stuff either - although there are some really good ones. While I don't mind country, I won't go out of my way to listen to it.

I just can't write in silence--It's too deafening.
