UPDATED. Shelving Found Books
date
newest »

Members, please use this thread to volunteer for sections you might want to work on: folders/dates. Thanks!
Also, all members, if you've found your book but don't want to shelve it yourself, please ask for it to be shelved and I will shelve those books. Thank you.

I'm adding the brand new solves if the member who posted does not. At some point (hopefully not too far in the future) I'll choose some folder to work on.
I've noticed that most of the ones in the "other" folder could actually fit on the adult, ya, children's, or non-fiction shelves. Easily.
The ones I'm not sure how to shelve (including one currently open query) are short stories that often aren't in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ as standalone books. Some are, but most aren't. So, it would be helpful if members gave us a book in which they're included, if they know of one.

Also, thanks to an idea from Lobstergirl, in the why we are reading this book section, I've been entering in the URL of the discussion thread for each found book, so doing that, when you shelve books, would also be appreciated.
Thanks so much.

What book is it? I"ll shelve it for you.

Thanks, Lisa!"
I'd already shelved it. ;-) If it's solved and I see it's not shelved, I will shelve it.

We shelve them partly to know which books we've found and partly because sometimes checking out other people's description of a thread searching for a book can help. Which is why we also put links to the threads of the book that is shelved into it. And we put ALL of the threads. Go to the bookshelf and do a search for Invitation to the Game and you'll see all the people who have looked for that book. (And there are quite a few. It's one of the more popular YA books that people search for.)

Please consider my thoughts. I believe that everyone would appreciate this as well.
Drizzt, this has been requested before and basically the reason is that it would create a huge amount of extra work for Mods, and also sometimes neither the Mods nor the poster know exactly what genre it is.
Right now with shelves we have Children's and YA combined in one section, and I can't even tell you how much easier that makes it for Mods. There's not even agreement among readers sometimes whether a book is Children's or YA, so dividing those two would be a huge hassle.
Or Science Fiction vs. Fantasy - you would have a similar issue.
One thing I can recommend to you is search within the group on what genre you want, like Historical Romance or "MM Romance" in the title field. If posters are doing a good job crafting their headers, that will often show up.

Members, don't forget, if you are going to shelve the book that your thread relates to, inside the edit function where it says "Why this book?" enter the URL of the thread. On the group bookshelves this URL will appear behind the click "about."
Move your thread to SOLVED. Then edit your header so the end of the header has an [s] for "shelved." But don't add that [s] unless you did actually shelve the book because that gets really confusing.
If your book shows up as grayed out when you go to shelve it, that means it has already been shelved in relation to another thread, and you should add your thread URL to the "Why this book" box of the existing record (rather than creating a new one) and select the "asked for more than once" shelf in addition to whatever other shelf you are putting it on.
Also you don't have to shelve your own book. Any mod can shelve it for you.

I would say the added value of shelving is that shelves are searchable, and the search results look different from just searching the group as a whole.
Also the way we use shelves, whether a book is the solution to one query or 15 queries, there will only be one shelving, and all the URLs for those queries will be together in one place, when you click on "about."
Group bookshelves can also be sorted by the headers: author, title, date shelved, etc., which can be useful.
Group shelves have additional functionality which we don't use - the shelf names can be used as tags. For example if you shelved "Charlotte's Web" you could tag it as children, middle-grades, farm animals, farms, spiders, pigs, death, etc. Clearly if shelves were used as tags things would get out of control pretty quickly and it would also drive mods batshit crazy, which is why we severely limit the number of shelves. But the functionality is there.
Having said that, group shelves are still way less functional than individual user shelves.

Kayla, please post your request in the Unsolved folder because you're looking for a specific book. Tell us what year you read the book, and include plot details in the Topic header.

Hello Group Members:
Please note that for security reasons, including but not limited to keeping spamming authors from adding their books to the group shelves, we no longer allow members to shelve books.
However, members are still able to move their threads from Unsolved to Solved if they wish to do so (they are not required to).
Since the topic of this thread was about members shelving books, we're now closing it.

Any member can shelve books, so it would be appreciated that if a book of yours is found, you add it to the group's bookshelves.
This is a long term project, but I will try to shelve all our found books. (Help from other members is also appreciated.)
The shelves match our folder titles. Please don't add shelves without group discussion. Remember, these are group, not personal, shelves.
Here are instructions for shelving books:
1. From the group's home page click on the "bookshelf" link.
2. In the "add books" search box enter your book's title or title and author.
3. When you see your book on the results page, click on the "add to group" box. (You can first choose the edition of your choice by clicking on the "other editions" link right below that box if you'd like to do that.)
4. You'll then get to a box. The first thing you do is click on the "choose shelves" link.
5. Then, put a check mark on all the shelves that are applicable to your book.
6. Close that smaller shelves box. (ETA: This is sometimes, but not always, an optional step.)
7. In the big book box that remains, click save.
8. Voila! Your book will now be shelved in our group, and will be searchable in all the shelves you selected.
Have fun!
