Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I started The Gaslight Dogs this morning during my work commute. I'm also re-reading (in depth with notes) The Curse of the Mistwraith for a group discussion. The rest of my reads for this month can be found on my current-month shelf.

Laurel Every month I put together a list of books I would love to read. Its always more than I can manage, and I always ramble off to find something new, but I still look forward to the first of the month to dream up that list!

The Ships of Merior (Wars of Light & Shadow, #2; Arc 2 - The Ships of Merior, #1) by Janny Wurts Un Lun Dun by China Miéville The Moon Is Down (Penguin Modern Classics) by John Steinbeck Frankenstein The Lynd Ward Illustrated Edition by Mary Shelley Kraken by China Miéville Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay Hell House by Richard Matheson The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Happy Reading!

message 4: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) I'm currently deep into a reread of the Wars of Light and Shadow series, but plan on reading Mistborn: The Final Empire and The Name of the Wind. I also have the 2nd trilogy in the Foreigner series, and started Precursor a few days ago but haven't gotten very far d.t. vacation and the aforementioned reread. I'm listening to The Dark Horse and finding it very enjoyable. Aside from those, I have forbidden myself to buy any more books before I read the ones already stacked beside my nest and in my Nook and on my ipod!

message 5: by Terence (new)

Terence (spocksbro) I took advantage of a company giftcard to splurge on some fiction from the Wish List:

The Bloody Chamber
Hidden Moon
Kraken
The City & The City
A Curse Dark As Gold
The Real Cool Killers
Anarchy and Old Dogs
Tanglewreck

And I've got pre-ordered, The White Luck Warrior: The Aspect Emperor, Book 2, Surface Detail and The Crippled God: Book Ten of The Malazan Book of the Fallen.

I don't know that I'll actually get to any of these this month (the TBR shelf still has volumes from the last splurge).

Right now, I'm rereading the first two novels in Tad Williams' Shadowmarch: Shadowmarch and Shadowplay in anticipation of Shadowrise (one of those abovementioned previous-splurge books).

message 6: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments Laurel, I really enjoyed Under Heaven. I thought it was Kay's best book in years. I also liked Kraken.

I just finished Black Lung Captain: Bk. 2: Tales of the Ketty Jay by Chris Wooding earlier this afternoon. Perhaps not as original as Retribution Falls, but every bit as good. Can't wait for the next book!

message 7: by Bin (last edited Aug 03, 2010 05:02PM) (new)

Bin (belowthesun) | 1 comments Finally got around to reading The Name of the Wind, just about finished with that. So far I like it a lot, can't wait for the next one.

Then I'm either picking up The Princess Bride or Ghosts of Ascalon

message 8: by Katie (new)

Katie (ygraine) I've just started The Affinity Bridge by George Mann, a mystery set in an alternative Victorian London complete with airships, automata and zombies. It's very silly but rather good fun.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments I just re-read To Save a World, an omnibus of The Planet Savers and The World Wreckers.

Yesterday I started The King in Yellow, and this morning I quickly read The Princess and the Lord of Night (a children's book).

Phoenixfalls | 195 comments Nikki wrote: "I just re-read To Save a World, an omnibus of The Planet Savers and The World Wreckers."

Those are some of my favorite Darkover novels! (Of course, I say that about most of the Darkover novels. . . but I really liked The World Wreckers and The Planet Savers was cool because it had Regis as a young man and showed the Trailmen.) :)

message 11: by Weenie (new)

Weenie | 99 comments Just started reading The Seeds of Earth by Michael Cobley. Been a while since I read sci-fi so took a while to envisage the galaxy to galaxy scope but am enjoying it so far.

message 12: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 418 comments Laurel wrote: "Every month I put together a list of books I would love to read."

I very much admire your ability (or even attempt) to plan your reading! I take a more "gatherer" approach to what to read ... unless I've decided to read through a series, I wander around until I bump into a book that looks like it might be nourishing, or at least interesting and dive on in.

Thanks to the magic of free Kindle downloads, I am reading Breakthrough! - Jon Queijo

message 13: by Arthur (new)

Arthur (astra) 1/5 into The Host by Stephenie Meyer

message 14: by Rusty (new)

Rusty | 93 comments Just finished Warrior Woman by Marion Zimmer Bradley - quite different from other work that I have read by MZB. I liked it though and think that many others would like it. It has a surprise ending that wraps up the story nicely.

message 15: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 418 comments I read Warrior Woman a couple of months ago. I was really enjoying the beginning of the story, but when it suddenly changed gears, I was very fearful of the transmission getting ripped out of my brain.

I prefer her Darkover novels.

message 16: by Snail in Danger (Sid) (last edited Aug 05, 2010 04:11PM) (new)

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments World Wreckers struck me as slightly purple prose-ish, but that may be why I loved it when I was younger. Not her strongest work, but I could definitely see some themes and ideas that were fixtures in MZB's work. (I've been tidying up her list of works here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ in my spare time, and in a way it's amazing how much she produced and edited.)

After having gotten On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness and The Heroines from the library and tried them but not been intrigued enough to continue, I'm reading A Rumor of Gems. I just started, but so far it's excellent.

Hm. Sounds pretty good.

Good to hear how others feel. Thanks for the feedback about Warror Woman. I quite like her writing. Found this one a bit out of the the MZB norm. Interesting.

message 20: by Cecile (new)

Cecile | 11 comments Just finished GRIDLINKED, by Neal Asher. About to start SPIN STATE, by Chris Moriarty.

message 21: by Sandra (last edited Aug 07, 2010 09:00AM) (new)

Sandra (sleo) I just finished a reread of Fugitive Prince and am starting Grand Conspiracy. This series is so complex the reread (slower as I now know what happens) is very rewarding as I find so many things I missed first time through!

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments A Rumor of Gems kind of ran out of steam toward the end. Unfortunate. I was wondering how I'd missed this book, and well, I guess I know now. The resolution was not terribly satisfying, and it had what I see as some storycraft problems.

But The Dark Vineyard showed up for me at the library yesterday, and I'm looking forward to that.

message 23: by Tim Scofield (new)

Tim Scofield | 4 comments I'm reading book 2 of the Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe.

message 24: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments I read City of Thieves by David Benioff the other day and it was a great read.

Earlier tonight I got through Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. It was a good sequel to The Hunger Games, even if President Snow is something of a cliched villain.

message 25: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Just started reading The Golden Compass until Mistborn: The Final Empire arrives

message 26: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (clevtrev) | 38 comments Finished reading Knife of Dreams yesterday and it was a definite improvement over the previous few books in the series.

I'm now reading Grave Peril by Jim Butcher.

I loved that.

message 28: by Jon (last edited Aug 08, 2010 06:37AM) (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I finished The Gaslight Dogs Friday afternoon and am still mulling it over. To lighten my mood for the weekend, I picked up another Victorian era (actually Late Victorian/Edwardian Era or WWI to be precise) novel, The Beekeeper's Apprentice. I've been remiss in not keeping up with the re-read on The Curse of the Mistwraith though.

message 29: by Rose (new)

Rose (trunkmuffins) About halfway through Queen of Angels by Greg Bear.

message 31: by Sandra (last edited Aug 08, 2010 08:31PM) (new)

Sandra (sleo) Derrick, if you click on the words 'add book/author' at the top of the box it will bring up a page and you can search for the book you're looking for, click 'add' and it will post as a link.

I haven't read the Empire novels yet but they are in my pile.

Trevor (clevtrev) | 38 comments Trevor wrote: I'm now reading Grave Peril by Jim Butcher.

I finished Grave Peril a bit ago and it was a lot of fun.

Next up will be Reaper's Gale.

message 33: by Glen (new)

Glen I'm reading the anthology Swords & Dark Magic: The New Sword and Sorcery edited by Jonathan Strahan. I just got it from the library over the weekend. I've only read the Elric story called "Red Pearls" so far but I enjoyed it immensely. I read the novels years ago but it was great fun visiting with Elric and Moonglum again.

message 34: by Lara Amber (new)

Lara Amber (laraamber) | 664 comments I enjoyed Mistborn: The Final Empire so much I'm continuing with The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages. Then I'll get to Little Women. I'm not sure if I'll have time for anything else this month.

message 35: by Lee (last edited Aug 10, 2010 01:46PM) (new)

Lee (EL_Postal) | 20 comments Currently reading D-Day by Antony Beevor.

message 36: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I finished The Beekeeper's Apprentice (my review) on the commute home last night. I started The Mystery of Grace last night, but fell asleep after the second page (my fault, not de Lint's). I'm very remiss in re-reading Curse of the Mistwraith this week thanks to three days of training (and no lunch) at work.

message 37: by Ron (last edited Aug 16, 2010 08:01AM) (new)

Ron | 80 comments Finished Under Heaven and Lightsabers, currently reading Armageddon's Children and Superluminal, which I finally forced myself to finish.

message 38: by Arthur (new)

Arthur (astra) Finished The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Nothing special, although an improvement on Twilight series.
After 5 extremely light books, I have decided to read some classics.
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

message 39: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 418 comments Comes a Time for Burning - Steven F. Havill

It's a pre-publication galley for review. I'm sure there are some glaring anachronisms in there, but I'm trying just to let go and enjoy the story ...

message 40: by Michael (last edited Aug 11, 2010 10:21PM) (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) So far I've read;

message 45: by Pat (new)

Pat (patb37) I just started Ender's Game. The writing is awful, but I'll give it more time to see if it improves.

message 46: by lbuch79 (last edited Aug 13, 2010 11:12AM) (new)

lbuch79 I'm finally getting around to reading A song of Ice and Fire. I'm in the middle of A Storm of Swords right now and I'm very impressed. The only thing that worries me is George R.R. Martin keeling over before he's finished.

message 47: by Lara Amber (new)

Lara Amber (laraamber) | 664 comments I have a feeling that if George R.R. Martin keeled over, there would be a rush of fantasy fans rushing over to offer to preform CPR/donate a kidney/perform a resurrection spell.

message 49: by Tonya (new)

Tonya (tonyanc) | 11 comments Finished Dragon Bloodand statrted The Enchantment Emporium

message 50: by Robert (new)

Robert Stadnik (exodus69) | 2 comments I finished reading 7 Scorpions: Rebellion. Excellent book which I highly recommend. I also finished reading Grimspace. This novel was a complete disappointment. I have extended reviews of both on my bookshelf
