Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Do you ever get a bit of fantasy overload? Just have to read something else? When that happens, what genres do you like best, and what non-fantasy authors are your favorite?

message 2: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (Smiley1881) | 159 comments When I get in a mood for something different from fantasy I usually turn to historical novels. I don't read historical a lot so I'm not real familiar with all the writers but I do like Philippa Gregory and Jen Holling.

Nita (gillnit) When I get fantasy overload, I tend to reach for a non-fiction book. Generally it is a history or science book, and it just reminds me how strange and wonderful real life can be too.

message 4: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I usually flip between PNR and HR, but I'm lumping UF and Sci-Fi romance in the PNR category, so maybe it's actually 4 genres I flip between?

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 237 comments When I get tired of one fantasy sub-genre I usually switch to another - PNR / UF / dystopia / epic fantasy / general fantasy / sci-fi. However, I do occasionally step into many other genres at random intervals.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I do get tired if I just read one thing. I try to switch it up by mixing in others, although UF/PNR is my main stay, I'll throw in mysteries and straight romances.

Ditto Darcy's comment for me. I do like historical novels, though, whether fiction or romance. If I don't read a romance, I tend to go for murder mystery or police procedural.

Alyssa (shyluck13) | 30 comments UF/PNR is also my main alley but I turn to chick lit or romance, or hard thriller/mystery.

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) UF/PNR are my favs for a long time now but I got feeling overloaded a couple of weeks ago and went to a fiction board.I was so lucky ,they had listed their favs of the decade and I got 2 books ordered from them. Then if I can read them between each fantasy I won`t get burnout.
I am not even a third of the way thru the lists so I will have something new.I love Mystery/Crime but think I`ve read every one of those, and no matter who I try I cannot read HR,and I have tried Kleypas,Mcnaught,Garwood, etc and it just doesn`t click in my obstinat head !

Jess | 3721 comments I also read a mix of genres. My general rule of thumb is to have a few books in every genre out from the library at one time. Sometimes I will get in a groove and read a whole bunch of PNR, contemp. romance, or another genre for a few days. But usually I switch it up, or I will get bored.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 208 comments Historical fiction is one of my fav genres too. If I tire of fantasy, I'll either grab one a work of historical fiction or I more often reach for a mystery.

Kathy Anne, if you are looking for a new mystery, check out It's a great resource for mystery lovers.

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 147 comments When I'm not in the mood for fantasy or PNR, I read mysteries and contemporary romance and nonfiction, especially if it has to do with earth science or ancient history.
