Beth (beth_shulman) | 6 comments What are some classics that you love and think everyone should read?

I would have to say The Great Gatsby and The Sound and the Fury.

What would you recommend? (American or non-American suggestions would be lovely.) Thanks all!

Ging I was going to say Lord of the Flies, but that was before I scrolled down the page to see your 1-star review lol. Not too keen on classics, but looking at my shelves, here are the ones I gave 5 stars to (other than poor LotF):

The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell Kokoro by Natsume Sōseki Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Mordena | 3 comments Classics how? That's pretty broad. But okay, some of my faves are O, Pioneers (Willa Cather -- pretty much anything by Willa Cather), Bleak House or Our Mutual Friend (Dickens), Lolita (Nabokov), short stories by Kipling and Ambrose Bierce (underrated, wonderful stuff)... Are we just doing classics for grownups here?

Beth (beth_shulman) | 6 comments B. - lol, it definitely wasn't one of my favorite books. Will look at the other ones.

Beth (beth_shulman) | 6 comments Mordena, thanks! I think I've read most children's classics, and I just discovered adult ones. I've read My Antonia by Willa Cather (I didn't love it, but she's a great writer). And I realize that I've barely read any Dickens. Or Kipling. And I've never heard of Ambrose Bierce. Thanks!

Jamie Dacyczyn (readsintrees) | 9 comments I've decided my classics-appreciation must be broken. Everyone loves The Great Gatsby, but I read it and I guess I didn't "get" it. Maybe I'll put it on my mental list of books to reread.

Maria | 1 comments Jamie - I'm not a big fan of The Great Gatsby either. I blame it on having to read and discuss it for English class in high school. My favorite F. Scott Fitzgerald is actually This Side of Paradise.
