Whether you are new to GoodReads or a seasoned veteran, I’m pretty sure we can all agree that we love this site. However, I’m pretty sure, like me, there are certain aspects of the website that we might not be completely familiar with.

In honor for this fabulous place that has given us readers so much fun, September’s challenge is called Expedition:GoodReads.

For this challenge, we are going to do things a little bit differently. For some of the categories, there will be a task attached to it that needs to be done before you can mark the category complete.

Duration: September 1 - September 30, 2010

1. My Books - Read a book that is in the first top 50 of your To Read shelf (Main View, starting from #1)

2. Groups Read a book that is in the bookshelf of Paranormal Romance Group (Scroll down to see the bookshelf)

3. Good Reads Author Read a book written by a GoodReads author. ( Click on Explore, and go down to authors. You will also see “GoodReads Author Profile� on their author page. Also if you go to your own to-read shelf, any author ‘s name with an asterisk is a GoodReads author)

4. Recommended Book Read a book that has been recommended to you through GoodReads recommendation feature (On your profile, you will find these books under the category book recommendations. If you have not received any since you have been a member in GR, just announced that to our group, and I’m pretty sure you will have soon.)

5. Quiz/Trivia Read a book that had a quiz or trivia question done for it, or Read a book and then create your own quiz or trivia questions about it. (Go to explore, and then select either Quiz or Trivia. If you chose quiz, (minimum of 5 items) post a link or if you choose trivia, just post your created question (maximum of 3)

6. Listopia Read a book that is in the top five of a popular list. (Go to Explore, click books. Be sure to tell us the name of the list you got the book from)

7. Friends Read a popular book among your GoodReads’s friends (Go to Friends, click on Popular Books tab)

8. Book-of-the-Month Read Read a book that is currently or soon to be a Book-of-the-Month Read of a GoodReads Group. (Go to groups, click on my groups. You will see currently reading and Upcoming Book Club Reads on the right side. Be sure to tell us which group did you get your book.)

9. Good Reads Shelves Read a book that is shelved in the first 10 pages of Paranormal Romance (Go to Explore, choose books, select genre, and on the search box, type paranormal romance. This will lead you to the Paranormal Romance shelf.)

10. Challenges Read a book that you are also reading for another challenge in a different group. Be sure to tell us what is the challenge, and from which group. (To find groups with challenges, go to groups, and type in the search box ‘reading challenges�)

(Note: I will not pretend to know everything about GR, so once this challenge rolls out, and questions come up, any member who feel they know the answer, feel free to help each other out.)

Again, you may post your list beforehand or post as you go, but no reading before September 1.

A fun UF series is Katie MacAlister's Aisling Gray: Guardian series. It starts with You Slay Me. Most of her books are Paranormal Romance of some sort. She's also spun off a couple of series from this one, so when you complete this series, there are more to read with many of the same, crazy characters!

Note: If you're looking for something edgy, like Anita Blake, this may not be the series for you. These are more light-hearted and LOL funny.

Welcome to the challenge.

You can use any books that have some kind of paranormal/fantasy elements in it for the challenges, not limited to PNR.

Furthermore, you can used up to 3 books that do not have a single paranormal element in it.

Would it be appropriate for me to list some books I would like to have someone recommend to me? Or should I just mention anything from my too be read list would be lovely?!

For everyone who needs recommendations, I was going to go into your bookshelves and if there was anything you had on your TBR list that I had read it and given it 5 stars, I would recommend it.

But...you can't recommend a book to someone if they already have it on their TBR. Which makes it much harder to recommend something to someone. :(

Also, you can only make recommendations to people who are your friends on GoodReads.

Yes, as long as you don't have it on your TBR. And, that person would have to be friends with you on GR to make a recommendation.

I need recs too! I'm really really fired from buying books though so I can only do something from my TBR pile of books that I currently own. My "owned" books section is relatively accurate. I'm not sure if everyone can view it, when they aren't available for swap. But...if they are...that would be excellent if it doesn't break any rules for someone to recommend one of those books. Thanks!!

YZ, when you say Good Reads Shelves, do you mean put in "paranormal romance" into the search engine or do you mean, look at the first 10 pages of books listed as paranormal romance, like you do with your RRRC challenges?

It has 50 books per page. There is around 5,327 books in that list. You just simply choose within the first 10 pages.

Ok, I'm having trouble with this one. There are no numbers on my to-read shelf, it just seems to list everything in order from latest added to earliest added. I clicked on My Books from the very top of the page, then To-Read bookshelf from the left side with Main view chosen from top. What am I doing wrong?

You should see the far left column is named "order" and there should be a number there. Not necessarily in order so you'll have to click on the word "order" to put them in numerical order. Hope that helps!

@ Diane -- If your order column is hidden (like mine is), you can either unhide it... Or, I just sorted my TO-BE-READ shelf by date-added and looked at the first 50 added to find my book.

If you want the order column, click the EDIT SHELVES link at the top of my books and then click Enable Sorting link next to to-be-read. I believe this will turn that column back on.

Thanks! This got me pointed in the right direction. To make the numbered column show up, after you click EDIT SHELVES, choose Re-Order Shelf. Just in case anyone else needs to do this as well.

They must be your friend. Click on the book name, then between Friend Reviews and Lists with this Book is a Recommend This Book.. link, click it and it will open a list with your friends (may have to click the tab over from contacts), then just put in check marks and click Recommend in the bottom right.

Lovely Laura...I need a rec! Having already raided your shelves to find a birthday one for another challenge, I trust your judgement...but please, no 2X4's! Have a few hefty ones (500+) on Sept (and Aug) TBR already!
