I've missed "talking" to you all, and think it is indeed time to have another group read. (Thanks, Sarah and Jeannette, for the suggestion!)

What's your fancy?

message 2: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I will kick off suggestions with A NOTE IN MUSIC by Rosamond Lehmann.
Published by Virago Modern Classics ISBN:0-86068-248-X. For anyone who wants to look it up...

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

How strange, I keep seeing Rosamund Lehmann everywhere :o Must be a sign.

I'm going to go for To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. I've never been brave enough to give it ago, but with the moral support of this group hopefully would!

Nice to see you all :)

message 4: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Hi Lauren....
Its strange that you should mention TO THE LIGHTHOUSE as in the Aldous Huxley Biography that I am reading he compares it to THE MAN WITHIN by Graham Greene(which I'm trying to get hold of),so it would tie into my reading exquisitely well....

message 5: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments I would love to discuss something not as much talked about as To the Lighthouse, which for me would be something like Rosamund Lehmann. I just like exploring new things :)

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

I actually bought a second-hand copy of Lehmann's The Echoing Grove last month on Ebay. However, it never arrived. It's a real shame because I loved the Helena Bonham Carter and co adaptation, The Heart of Me. Then, I went on holiday and Lehmann's The Weather in the Streets was on the shelf by my bed. I would not be adverse to reading one of hers, definitely :-)

message 7: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Rosanund Lehmann after my nomination of A NOTE IN MUSIC,came up at the end of my Huxley Biography....A portent perhaps?

If the winner is something that I have I will read it but ad I am going to be away for a bit in September it will depend on when I could get a copy with discussion due to start October 1st..

Looking forward to seeing what else is nominated...

message 8: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
We can change the start date if people have trouble finding the selected book or have other problems. September will be a busy month for me, with book fairs, etc.

message 9: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) LOL!Apologies computer seemed to freeze up....

Thanks for the comment about start date Gabrielle.

message 10: by Rhea (new)

Rhea | 2 comments Hi, I'm a newbie here.. Since it's for Fall group read, I'd opt for a gothic novel.. Maybe REBECCA by Daphne du Maurier..

message 11: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Welcome, Rhea, and thanks for your suggestion. It's been decades since I read Rebecca, one of my favourites! We'll add it to the list of nominations.

message 12: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 27, 2010 05:30AM) (new)

I'd love to read Rebecca again - great suggestion. Welcome to the group, Rhea. It's great to have another addition to the little group :-)

message 13: by Rhea (new)

Rhea | 2 comments Thanks Gabriele and Lauren :).. Rebecca is one of my favourites too.. I fell in love with this group the moment I came across it.. Truly one of its kind.. The 1920s and 1930s were indeed fascinating, and, of course, so was the literature of this time..

Yes, and I think we have lots more books to add to our shelves! Cool! (orig. 1933) : ) (I love my Oxford Book of Slang!)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
We have our winner, but it was close! The Pursuit of Love Hope you'll all be able to participate in the discussion, beginning Oct. 15.

message 16: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I will do my best to be on time but have just been lent a couple of books that I want to read and return first....

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll see if I can find it. My library doesn't have a copy. :(

message 18: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Seriously?
This a bit strange....
Good luck!

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

DJ wrote: "Seriously?

I don't know if it's really strange or not. I do live in Iowa, so there may not be so many Mitford fans here! lol In fact, we only have one of her books. (I just checked.)

message 20: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Oooooops.....

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

DJ wrote: "Oooooops....."

Different tastes, unfortunately. That happens more often than I like it seems. I even have a GR shelf titled "not-at-apl" (apl = Ames Public Library). There are 41 books shelved there. :(

message 22: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) What about second hand shops?

message 23: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 07, 2010 12:19PM) (new)

I'll try. I'm not as fortunate in the number of great second-hand shops, either. :( I'll look around. I should read some Mitford!

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll track down a copy ASAP. Nice choice :-)

message 25: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Let me know how it goes Jeanette....? Please.

message 26: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments I start looking for it myself because I would like to join in the discussion. happy hunting everybody.

message 27: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Ok now I'm feeling really guilty ad I have a 3 in 1 copy of it and also Husband has gotten me a Beautiful Folio Edition that I saw (but I have got him to keep it until St.Valentines Day well it seemed an appropriate time)...
I really hope you can all find it.
I'm not an e-book girl but would that possibly make it easier for any of you at all? Hope you don't mind the suggestion :-)

message 28: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments hey DJ, are you back from your trip or is that still ahead? hope you have had a good day.

message 29: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Had a Marvelous trip :-)
I will post it up under Adventures and there is more to come.....
Hope you are feeling a bit better?

message 30: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments thank you DJ, I am doing well now and glad to hear you had fun. I will keep an eye for when you post more details!

I just ordered my copy through Amazon - well, one of its affiliates. It should be en route!

message 32: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I will let you know when I post Sarah :-)
Delighted you're managing to get hold of a copy Gabrielle.....

message 33: by Lee (new)

Lee (leekat) I will try and get a hold of this too but we will be moving that week so I can't promise. I don't know if my new library will have it either but they should.

message 34: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Moving is a huge chore! Where are you going, Lee?

Maybe the new library can get it for you through inter-library loan. I do hope you can participate, even if later, but I also know how difficult it is to do anything else while moving!

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I just requested the book through ILL, so I have a good chance of getting it within the next week or so. :)

message 36: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Yay, Jeannette! I received mine in the mail this week, along with a couple of research books. Good prices from the Book Depository, bought through Amazon.

message 37: by Lee (new)

Lee (leekat) Jeannette, we are moving to Hamilton. I think the library system will probably have it. I don't have a card yet so I can't order it online but once we're settled I'll try and catch up with the discussion.

That's a good drive from Toronto, looking at the map. Will you be in the country like Gundula, too? I'm glad it all worked out for you!

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Hey, Lee, you'll be closer to me!

message 40: by Paula (new)

Paula Found this for Kindle, so just downloaded it. Looking forward to a group read with you lovely ladies! Good luck with the move, Lee! :)

message 41: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Great to have you with us, Paula!

message 42: by Lee (new)

Lee (leekat) Nope, we'll be in the east end of the city while Gundula is slightly to the west. And yes, Guelph is not too far Gabriele! We might meet in person one day!

message 43: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 I've ordered Love in a Cold Climate in the same volume as The Pursuit of Love. The second one is a sequel, and they're both fast reads.

My copy contains both of them as well!

Hey, great, Jeannette!

message 46: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I'm luck...I've got a paperback that has all 3!
Woo Hoo....

DJ wrote: "I'm luck...I've got a paperback that has all 3!

You have all the luck, DJ! ;)

message 48: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) No....
Just way too many books! LOL...
I just wish we were going to be reading this mid to end of February next year as Husband has gotten me a beautiful Folio Edition but I told him to keep it for my St.Valentines Gift......

message 49: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments I know, Jeannette, DJ is a real book connoisseur (I had to look that word up!). Send us a link to that edition so we can see what it looks like, DJ.

I am so glad we are doing a group read here again. This is one of the best groups on the site. And I have heard so much about this book and the family associated with it.

message 50: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Thanks, Sarah! Yes, It should be a fun read. I've recently read about the Mitfords and they are a fascinating family. Nancy based this novel on them, so that should be most interesting.
