Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments Here's the autumn challenge - now with 100% more spookiness! We'll use the same ground rules as for the other challenges:

1. The Challenge begins at 12:00 A.M. local time on October 1, 2010 and ends at 11:59 P.M. local time on December 31, 2010.
2. This challenge is just for fun, so make sure you enjoy yourself and all the books you will be reading!
3. All books must be: Young Adult or Juvenile Fiction, have won an Alex (or similar) award, or be from the Ultimate Teen Book Guide.
4. All books must be at least 100 pages long to count for any of the tasks, unless otherwise noted in the task.
5. Re-reads count, unless otherwise noted in the task.
6. Audio books and electronic books (unabridged), such as Kindle, all count for this Challenge. Page counts will be according to the Good Reads page count.

Bonus: There is a 10 point bonus for reading all the monthly tasks within that month.

Section 1 - October
Task 1 Read a "Halloween"-themed book.
This can be a book involving "Halloweeny"-type creatures (ie. ghosts, zombies, or vampires,) or a book that actually involves the holiday, candy, or dressing up in costume.
This task is worth 5 points.

Task 2 Read a book about something that scares you.
This task is worth 10 points.

Task 3 Read a "Halloween"-setting book.
This can be a book that takes place or has a major event in the fall, in a Gothic Victorian setting, or in a graveyard.
This task is worth 15 points.

Task 4 Read two books that were published in October of any year.
This task is worth 20 points.

Task 5 Read an October Awareness book.
Read a book that has something to do with an awareness day/week/month of October and write a review of it for the Parent's Corner recommending why kids should read about this topic. For examples of awareness causes that October observes, visit:
This task is worth 25 points.

Section 2 - November
Task 1 Read a book about food or has some sort of food in the title (drinks count as food.)
This task is worth 5 points.

Task 2 Read a book that features two distinct cultures clashing.
This task is worth 10 points.

Task 3 Read a book with a gratitude word in the title or centers around gratitude.
"Thank" and "Give" and
This task is worth 15 points.

Task 4 Read two books published in November of any year.
This task is worth 20 points.

Task 5 Recommended book and thank you note
Read a book someone gave or recommended to you and write them a thank you card afterward telling them what you thought of the book. If you're in the position that people don't recommend YA novels to you, feel free to consider any book on anyone's list that's posted here, a book from the WT Book Pushing folder (http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...,) or a book on a friend's YA shelf as all recommendations.
This task is worth 25 points.

Section 3: December
Task 1 Read a book about winter or snow (or has either word in the title.)
This task is worth 5 points.

Task 2 Read a book with a religious or spiritual theme.
This task is worth 10 points.

Task 3 Winter Break
Read a book that takes place during a winter school break (or during that period of time - New Years, Christmas, and other winter holidays are all included as viable options. This is similar to the October task, only with winter break.) Alternatively, read a book that's on a Winter Break list such as:

(There's a Books for Teens section down the page. They are all Christmas oriented books)
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/57...
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/36...

Just be certain to choose a YA book from the list.

This task is worth 15 points.

Task 4 Read two books published in December of any year.
This task is worth 20 points.

Task 5 Gift books
Read a book you intend to (or could) gift to someone this holiday and explain in a post why it deserves to be shared.
This task is worth 25 points.

Section 4 - Year End Round-up
Task 1 Favorite book of 2010
EITHER re-read your favorite book of 2010 OR team up with another WTer and swap favorite books. For values of "of 2010" it can either be a book published in 2010 or that you simply read in 2010.
This task is worth 5 points.

Task 2 Read a 2010 Award Winning book.
Must be an award, not a "made it to a list," must be a winner, not a nominee.
This task is worth 10 points.

Task 3 Catching up
Read a WT Discussion group book that you missed earlier in the year and revive the discussion. Or read a book that fits one of the Monthly challenge themes that you have not contributed to yet.
This task is worth 15 points.

Task 4 Read two nominees for a 2011 YA book award of your choice.
Some lists for this are:

http://www.goodreads.com/award/show/5...

This task is worth 20 points.

Task 5 Write a list of the books you are most excited about in 2011. We'll start a thread specifically for this and post and discuss.
This task is worth 25 points.

Is that okay?

That's weird- I know it doesn't come until late December... It couldn't have been out in 9/08 because the first one of the series just came out last year...

message 9: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments According to wikipedia, Twilight was in January. Buuuut, seeing as we have it there on GR, I'll let it go. As for Sapphique, again, according to wikipedia: it "is scheduled to be released in the US in December 2010" so I guess I was wrong, and we'll allow it.

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments and, I hope you guys know that I'm not trying to pick on you or anything by going over your lists - I'm honestly trying to help, so you don't end up reading a book that you think will count only to have it not count for some reason. (Not that anything's not counted so far, but still... that's my intention.)

Just FYI- Wikipedia does say December 2004. I think the new version of it came out in January 2006....

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Maybe we can choose a source to use for this so we aren't getting conflicting info... Like we can go by Wikipedia (whether it's right or wrong!) and not have to hunt the same books down multiple places. What do you think?

Amy Okay here's my list........There are a few holes. I've also listed multiple books for some categories b/c I"m fickle and can never decided exactly what I'm going to read, so I gave myself options.

For the reread of a favorite book, does it have to be one published in 2010? Or just one we read during the year of 2010 and we loved?

1.5 Ghostgirl/Vampire Academy/Betrayed
1.10 The Dead and the Gone
1.15 Rebel Angels/Fallen
1.20 13 Little Blue Envelopes
1.25 Dreamland

2.5 It's Raining Cupcakes/Make Lemonade
2.10
2.15 Forgive My Fins
2.20 Unwind/Flygirl/Shadowland
2.25 Unlocked

3.5 Mistletoe/Shiver
3.10 The Magic Menorah
3.15
3.20 Looking For Alaska/Need/The Dark Divine
3.25

4.5
4.10
4.15 The Knife of Never Letting Go
4.20 11 Birthdays/After/The Adoration of Jenna Fox
4.25 Torment/Crescendo/Halos: A Novel

So sorry I didn't do my entire list with links (like I had planned). Wanted to get my partially completed list posted this morning! My holes are where I'm having a hard time coming up with books. I searched through my book closet, my to be read list, and then now searching everyone else's list. LOL.

For the reread the rules say it can be published anytime, as long as it was read in 2010.

Amy Awesome. Thanks.

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments I have been having fun with our current challenge. I have to think if I can do this challenge without going crazy trying to find the right books. Those of you who have posted lists are amazing. I am still working to make sense of the directions. :-)

message 30: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm just hoping I can find time to read. Since I've been back at work my reading time is almost non existant.

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments Alyson, if you have any questions about the directions, feel free to ask - I'm sure there will be others who'll be confused, too, so you asking will be a good thing for them. ;-)

Amy, if it weren't for my job, I wouldn't have time to read! Fortunately, I work somewhere I can listen to audiobooks all day.

From reading the rules I thought you did have to read all of task 1 books in October.
"7. The different sections all "must" be read within their given months, with the exception of section 4, of which, the books can be read any time throughout the challenge."

And for the books to count - they must be read during the 3 months - not prior books except for the re-reads?

message 39: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Yeah- is 7. The different sections all "must" be read within their given months, with the exception of section 4, of which, the books can be read any time throughout the challenge. true?

If so then I probably won't be able to participate. October is a killer month at work for me and I have a bunch of review books that I must read and post. Oh well...maybe another challenge at another time.

I just know that I have teacher goal setting meetings, School Site Plan, School Safety Plan, plus I am serving on this short time task force that has a November 1st deadline - so I will be in extra meetings including Saturdays. October is insane. I will be happy to get any reading done but there is no guarantee.

message 45: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments I thought that it was a workable goal, but seeing as it isn't for so many, I'll change it. Stick with Heather's ruling that you don't have to do them in the month.

message 46: by Amy (new)

Amy So what exactly are we changing? When are we starting? Ending? We can now read the books throughout the challenge but don't have to stick to the months?

message 47: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments Start and end are still the same, the only thing that's changing is you can now read the books whenever throughout the challenge. In other words, #7 is now no longer an existing rule.

message 48: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Phew! Thank you Jesi!!! You could make it a bonus if we read it during the month....

message 49: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Kellee wrote: "Phew! Thank you Jesi!!! You could make it a bonus if we read it during the month...."

Or to really make us earn the bonus, we could have to complete all the tasks for that section in the corresponding month. That'd be closer to what Jesi had originally intended.

message 50: by Amy (new)

Amy Okay that's good. I think I'm still going to start at the top of my list and work my way down. Makes me feel more accomplished that way.
