I live in the same area and would be happy to partake in the formation of a local club/reading group if there were enough interested, minimum five, I would think.
My interests are crime fiction and autbiography, currently reading Stephen Fry and MR Hall as well as finished PM Newton crime, and Jacqui Weaver autob.
I have also converted to digital and have Sony ereader as well as Kindle, both excellent.

Hi John, thanks for the information. I know the club you mentioned, the one that's run by the library but you're absolutely right: the book selection is made without member input and on top of that you have to pay an annual membership fee :(
I share your interest in autobiography, and just this morning I've put Fry's memoir on my to-read list, too. If there are enough people I'm happy to help form a book club, too, where members can take turns to pick the book and host the discussion. It'll be great to start doing that online and then gradually move to offline meetings.

I really want to visit the ACT. I'm thinking of taking 3 months off from my job in Brisbane next year and getting an agency midwifery job in Canberra. I'd love to go to which is still on till the 10th October I believe. Did any of you Canberra-ites go this year?
2nd Last time I was in Canberra it was minus 4 deg. I was unloading my truck, dressed like the 'Michelin man', & still didn't work up a sweat, last time the area had record heat & the air con in the car decided to 'pull the pin' & I think the bulk of the hot air was around that huge white place there. LOL!

James Gleick is coming to ANU!!!He wrote the highly acclaimed Chaos: Making a New Science a biography of a scientist (and science in general) and recently came out with this fantastic book which tells the history of Information The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood.

I'm also from Canberra... haven't looked into a book club tho, I don't like the idea of sticking to stuff other people want to read... I'm happy picking my own books and going from there.

This page hasn't been active for a while, but I figured I'd jump in and say hi anyway! I'm currently a temporary Canberran (for the next 3 years), originally from the good old bogan-town, Young :) surprised that there doesn't seem to be too many of us ACT people on here..

Ex here. Also lived in Gunning and Braidwood (ten years? Can't remember.) Worked at the A.N.U as Technical Officer in the Photomedia workshop (Canberra school of Art). So the ANU and the NGA are the two places/things I miss most about the ACT. Oh, and the Fyshwick Markets and Woodstock pizzas (still make them well?). And my friends who live there of course.
Often miss the gorgeous town of Braidwood, and my little house in Elrington Street, next to the church with the gargoyles on the tower (they were my personal gargoyles for many years), swimming in the Molongolo, and hanging out, drinking coffee, and doing crosswords, on the balcony of the Albion, on a saturday morning, as the Canberrans drove past on their way to the coast. (Little mind-trip down memory lane).

We must have been pretty homesick, because the list included things like ACTION Buses!
Action buses, a big part of my teenage years in Canberra. I lived in Farrer, and went to Melrose High School (no, not particularly fond memories, but I had great art and history teachers), then Stirling College. I caught buses everywhere! Got kicked off them occasionally, ran after them, missed them, and once had my dog follow me onto one, then because no one else would let me on a bus with a dog, was stranded at the Wooden Plaza. A lovely stranger gave me money for a taxi back home again!
One of the other places I miss is Cornucopia, their pastries were so yummy! The Silo was good too, but way too busy to bother waiting in line. Are they both still there?
Oh and Electric Shadows, they had the BEST movies.

What I have NOT done so far is join a local book club. To be honest, don't like the idea of paying for one and the only free membership so far is the Jane Austen book club (love to join, but somehow am over Jane Austen), so I hope there are fellow AR members here from the area who are willing to get together for a casual book discussion over tea and biscuits.
