Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments We all have a series (or two) that, for whatever reason, we dropped.

So, what series did you start, but gave up on? Was it book #1 or further into the series? Why'd you stop reading? Do you find that you like series A from an author, but not series B? Do share!

We all know that everyone's opinion differs. What one person might love, another might not. But, hey, if you feel strongly about a series someone has dropped, maybe you can gently persuade them to give it another go. :)

message 2: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (catnaping) Well there are a couple of series I couldn't even finish the first book in Devour (Institut Scientifique, #1) by Melina Morel and Something Wicked by Catherine Mulvany thoe to be fair I might try them again its been a couple of years.
another series I tried several books in but I just couldn't keep reading Minion (Vampire Huntress Legend, #1) by L.A. Banks
also Traveler (Wildside Romance, #1) by Melanie Jackson I kept asking myself why are you reading this series?
I also still read Vampire Kisses (Vampire Kisses, #1) by Ellen Schreiber and Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast and I don't know why both series have gone down hill for me.
Thats all i can think of for now.

message 3: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Oct 06, 2010 04:35AM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments LOL, Patty! I'm the same with House of Night. I keep reading them b/c I just can't make myself ignore the next release.

I stopped reading in the middle of book #1:
Minion (Vampire Huntress Legend, #1) by L.A. Banks Witchling (Sisters of the Moon, #1) by Yasmine Galenorn Exit Strategy (Nadia Stafford, #1) by Kelley Armstrong (<--- but I love her other series)

I finished book # 1 (b/c of challenge), but didn't care for:
Blue Bloods (Blue Bloods, #1) by Melissa de la Cruz Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

(Some members' high opinion of Shiver has made me consider re-reading it)

message 4: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Ok well here's two which I know people really like but I just didn't get them so this might be a bit controversial but I'm sorry!!

Full Moon Rising (Riley Jenson Guardian, #1) by Keri Arthur Quite a few people have said that this series improves so I might give the second book a chance before I discard it completely. I had main character issues.

Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1) by Kelley Armstrong I know! This book is very popular but whether it was my mood or that I read it after a book I loved, I'm not sure. I may try to read it again but I couldn't really see what was so great about it.

message 5: by Jackie M (new)

Jackie M | 695 comments Josie I remember hating Bitten but I made myself continue to read and ended up giving it 4 stars, but I really had to push myself at times to read it.

message 6: by Kerstin (last edited Oct 06, 2010 02:06PM) (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments I stopped reading in the middle of book #1:
The Scent of Shadows (Sign of the Zodiac, #1) by Vicki Pettersson A Rush of Wings (The Maker's Song, #1) by Adrian Phoenix (I know a lot of people love The Makers Song series, so I might reread it sometime in the future)

I finished book #1, but am not sure if I continue:
Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning (*hides to evade the mob*)
I've heard from a lot of people though that the series turns out to be really great so I most likely will give the second instalment a chance should my library ever get it in (they currently only have book #1 and #4)
Insatiable Desire (Demonborn, #1) by Rita Herron

message 7: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 31 comments I stopped the Night Huntress series. I read three but it was too violent for me. People getting their heads ripped off and stuff.
I stopped the Cassie Palmer series after three, it jumped around too much for me.
I stopped Eileen Wilkes after four. I don't know why. I just got tired of it.

message 8: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments As a supportive mod, I'll just quietly say that should you choose to give any of those a second chance, I hope you will not be disappointed. ;)

message 9: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 31 comments I thought Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1) by Kelley Armstrong was pretty good. But I couldn't get very far into Stolen (Women of the Otherworld, #2) by Kelley Armstrong . It just wasn't working for me.

message 10: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments I forced myself to finish Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1) by Kelley Armstrong only becasue I had it in a challenge. I made a note that the story didn't start until page 109. IMO the first 108 pages should of taken 20 at most.

Not planning to read the rest no matter what peer pressure is brought to bear.

message 11: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments LOL! That sounds like a challenge. You sound certain though, so it won't come from me. I enjoy that series. But, there are bits (and books in it) that I had to push a little harder to get through. It seems to be one that people either stick with or can't get passed book 1.

message 12: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments That and the fact I had to buy it @AUD$13. I wasn't happy!!

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments I bet! Those AU book prices kicked my butt.

message 14: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (last edited Oct 06, 2010 06:58PM) (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments LOL. That was the price from Book Depository. Cheapest paperback price around at the time!

You probably haven't noticed but the exchange rate is now 97.5 to US$1. Nearly parity.

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments I did just see that. We keep an eye on the exchange rates for all the countries we've lived, just out of curiosity. We had it good when we first arrived, it was .60 to 1. It was like everything was 40% off.

message 16: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments Luckily you've moved on then. Now it's good from my perspective, I don't feel like I'm paying an arm and a leg for everything.

message 17: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments Yeah, but it's no good for us anywhere now. USD in the crapper. Glad it's better for you now though. You need it with those crazy prices!

Oh, and I remembered another book I just couldn't get though, but wanted to like: Bad Blood (Crimson Moon, #1) by L.A. Banks

message 18: by Literary Ames (last edited Oct 07, 2010 02:32PM) (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I feel sad that so many didn't like Bitten. It was the first UF book I ever read and got me back into reading. Oh well. I guess I can understand. It was written 10 years ago and it is a little slow.

I've stopped reading House of Night. I haven't read the latest, Burned.

I'm stopping with Anita Blake after Bullet. It was so bad it scared me off sex scenes for about 2 or 3 weeks in which I spent most of my time with YA.

Others I stopped after the first book:
Touch of Evil (The Thrall, #1) by C.T. Adams Blood Song (Bloodsinger, #1) by Cat Adams Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Evernight (Evernight, #1) by Claudia Gray Need (Need, #1) by Carrie Jones Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead Urban Shaman (Walker Papers, #1) by C.E. Murphy Evermore (The Immortals, #1) by Alyson Noel Wither (Wendy Ward, Book 1) by John Passarella Dante's Girl (Kayla Steele, #1) by Natasha Rhodes Greywalker (Greywalker, #1) by Kat Richardson A Rush of Wings (The Maker's Song, #1) by Adrian Phoenix Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #1) by Diana Rowland Vampire Kisses (Vampire Kisses, #1) by Ellen Schreiber The Fallen Volume 1 (The Fallen & Leviathan) by Thomas E. Sniegoski Stolen Fury (Stolen Trilogy, #1) by Elisabeth Naughton Moonlight (Dark Guardian, #1) by Rachel Hawthorne

I liked the last one, just wasn't interested in the rest of the series. And I liked Succubus Blues but I loved Roman and not Seth so why bother continuing.

Stopped in the middle of and may or may not one day finish:
Changeless (The Parasol Protectorate, #2) by Gail Carriger Night Shift (Jill Kismet, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow The Iron Hunt (Hunter Kiss, #1) by Marjorie M. Liu New Moon (Twilight, #2) by Stephenie Meyer

@Josie - I stopped with the Riley Jenson series after the second book. It's not for everyone. I had a lot of serious issues with it. Loved the Ripple Creek Werewolf series set in the same world though.

@Kerstin - Don't worry about not liking Darkfever . It was TERRIBLE but after much encouragement I read the second book and it was better so I'll continue with it. I'll hide with you and cover your butt when we're attacked especially since you didn't like A Rush of Wings either. :)

@Irene - Cassie Palmer, I can understand this because for the life of me I can never remember anything of what's happened in them. I only know that I like Pritkin yet I continue to buy them and give them good ratings. It's a mystery. Love the Dory series though.

message 19: by Charlotte (Buried in Books) (last edited Oct 07, 2010 02:12PM) (new)

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 557 comments hmmm, I hate to give up on a series (might take a year or two break between books though), but there have been a couple that I've really struggled with:

Evermore (The Immortals, #1) by Alyson Noel I didn't like it and I have no desire whatsoever to read any more of the series. WTF was that all about???

Northern Lights (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman Oh dear, the only reason I'll carry on with this series is the fact that I've already bought the other two books.

Other series I could take or leave (mainly because the central characters irritate the hell out of me):
Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs Succubus Dreams (Georgina Kincaid, #3) by Richelle Mead Hunted (House of Night, #5) by P.C. Cast All Together Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #7) by Charlaine Harris Undead and Unappreciated (Undead, #3) by MaryJanice Davidson Pleasure Unbound (Demonica, #1) by Larissa Ione
And lastly - Dark Desires After Dusk (Immortals After Dark, #6) by Kresley Cole , I just don't enjoy this series anymore (don't think I enjoyed it that much to begin with, hot sex gets a bit boring when everything else is such a cliche).

message 20: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments Thanks Ames! Good to know that there are two of us; I'm sure we can outsmart them and get away unscathed ;)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Kerstin wrote: "Thanks Ames! Good to know that there are two of us; I'm sure we can outsmart them and get away unscathed ;)"

LOL! They've got no chance against us.

message 22: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments Ames you reminded me of another one I didn't like and skimmed Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

It just didn't do anything for me at all. Didn't like the MC and thought the story was boring.

Luckily this one was a library book. I even got the next 2 out of the library at the same time but returned them unread.

message 23: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments That's one of my hubby's faves. I haven't tried it yet though. We'll see if it'll make my list too.

message 24: by Karin Elisabeth (new)

Karin Elisabeth (goodreadscomkarinelisabeth) | 151 comments Hopefully I'm going to survive telling everybody that I stopped reading BDB after Book 5 Lover Unbound. The story just didn't do it for me any more and what I read about Phury's book didn't make me buy it. (ducks for cover!)

message 25: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25884 comments That's the beauty of our group, we don't mind if you don't like a book or a series most people love. No need to duck.

There are plenty more books out there to fall in love with!!!

message 26: by Amber (new)

Amber (crazyaboutbooks) | 499 comments I'd have to say, so far I wasn't able to finish The Forest of Hands and Teeth (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #1) by Carrie Ryan . Just wasn't what I was looking for @ the time, but might try it later.
Another series I have a problem with is Evermore (The Immortals, #1) by Alyson Noel . The main character in this series doesn't do anything for me, but upset me and make me want to toss my book at something. I have to put these books in a book challenge just so I can finish the series :(
Up-side :D that's all I've come across that I have a problems with.

message 27: by Sandra J (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 145 comments I bought On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews when it came out and stopped reading it at page 94. It wasn't bad, I just didn't care about the characters or the situation they were in. Maybe I'll eventually go back to it.

message 28: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments @Sandra - Ditto! I HATED Storm Front even though I listened to James Marsters (Spike in Buffy) read it. I liked his voice but the book was horrible. I've been told it gets better by the third book but I haven't been able to force myself to continue with it.

@Sandra J - I can understand about On the Edge , it wasn't as good as Kate Daniels but the second one is a lot better, in my opinion.

Oh dear, I have Minion and The Forest of Hands and Teeth on my TBR bookshelves. *sigh*

message 29: by Barb (new)

Barb | 28 comments I couldn't get through Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire this at all, I just couldn't relate to the main character and I thought the story just seemed weird, even for fantasy :-)

I got through the first 3 books of Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead series, but just couldn't force myself to move on. Bummer, since Mead's Vampire Academy and Storm Born series are 2 of my top favorites!

For those of you who do decide to go back and finish Bitten or Stolen, Armstrong's books won't disappoint! Although I definitely have to be in the mood to read them, I feel like they require more emotional investment for some strange reason, but I'm always happy when I'm finished.

message 30: by Angi (new)

Angi | 485 comments For me:

I just couldn' finish this one. Something about it just never interested me, so I sent it back to booksfree: Ill Wind (Weather Warden, #1) by Rachel Caine
This one, I read the first and it was okay but then I picked up the second and just couldn't become interested in the story or the characters AT ALL The Dead Girls' Dance (The Morganville Vampires, #2) by Rachel Caine
This one I finished but I didn't like it. I should have known from the crappy cover art: Blood Memories (Vampire Memories, #1) by Barb Hendee
Minion (Vampire Huntress Legend, #1) by L.A. Banks I sent this one back after a few chapters - ugh.
Vampire Kisses (Vampire Kisses, #1) by Ellen Schreiber This one is TRULY a young adult (you know how most are labeled that way and there is no WAY you can imagine a "young adult" reading it ... well this one is OKAY!)
Mortal Danger (World of the Lupi, #2) by Eileen Wilks I don't even know which book in the series this is but I tried to read a couple from this one and couldn't get into them at all

message 31: by Angi (new)

Angi | 485 comments Unfortunately, I don't enjoy Exit Strategy (Nadia Stafford, #1) by Kelley Armstrong but I have to say, Kelley Armstrong's "Women of the Otherworld" series - I LOVE them. There are a few that I don't like as well as the others, but I definitely recommend trying to read it more. And about her - she is great to her fans. I remember writing to her to let her know how much I enjoyed reading her after the first book and she wrote me back and sent me bookmarks, plates, magnets, etc. If you wanted her to autograph bookplates and send them to you, she would for no fee. I won an advanced reader's book for "Broken". I just think she's great to her fans :)
