Alain de Botton discussion
On Writing

I'm delighted. To answer you honestly, I sometimes don't deal with the difficulties of the writing life well. It is incredibly risky, lonely and frightening - and on a bad day, I feel it can't carry on this way. Then on a good day, I feel creative, I decide it doesn't matter whether it all goes horribly wrong - I feel light, happy before challenges and adventurous. I have learnt to use these precious moments to set the goals of my life.
Let me be the one to bite the bullet and ask this question: what are your thoughts on writing and being a writer? How do you deal with the struggle of getting your work out there and the loneliness that sometimes hounds the writing life?
You probably get asked that a lot. I live in Manila, Philippines; it's very seldom that my favourite writers glance our way, so I guess I'm taking the chance here. Hope that's okay.
Your books have changed my life in more than one occasion. Lest I sound totally over the moon, let me say, thank you, Alain, and I look forward to more of your works in the future.
Sincerely,
T.
