Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I'm nearly finished with the SF/Fantasy November fantasy book, The Magic of Recluce and about halfway finished with The Hero and the Crown.

Last Friday, I checked out Against All Things Ending and I'm waiting to receive my signed and numbered copy of Towers of Midnight this week.

For the rest of November, which I hope allows me to read more than I did in October, I'll work through my current-month book shelf.

Finishing Magician by Raymond E. Feist.
Then ill read Spy Glass by Maria V. Snyder, The Secret Hourby Scott Westerfeld, Into the Wild by Erin Hunter. Hopefully ill have time to read more than those, but november and december are such busy months ;/

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Just started Firebird by mercedes Lackey.

message 5: by Marc (new)

Marc (authorguy) | 393 comments I haven't read anything new for a while now. After Confluence in July, I started writing a short story for the next contest. After I got that done, my edits came in for St. Martin's Moon. After I got those done my publisher asks for holiday stories, or steampunk stories, and I came up with a steampunk holiday story. So here I am. I did fit in a new mystery, called Madness and Murder, that just came out, mainly so I could sell it properly at my events.

Emma Finishing Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch.
Hopefully then I'll get to Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie.

message 7: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Wow, Emma. Those are two Book#2's that I've been really wanting to get to for about a year.

message 8: by Emma (new)

Emma How could you possibly wait a year? I've been way too anxious!
So far, Red Seas Under Red Skies delivers. It's not as brilliant as its predecessor, but it's quite decent.
And from what I've heard, BTAH is even better than TBI, so I'm just as excited about it.

message 9: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments You know how it is. So many books....one shift in a reading mood and blam, off on other things....

I do hope to come back to these soon though.

I'm planning on hopefully getting to RSURS in November, but, being as I didn't think its predecessor was all that great, this does not bode well for me. Ah well.

I started 'Small Favor' this morning. I've been putting it off and putting it off, 'cause Dresden was getting kind of formulaic to me, but, so far I've been really enjoying the banter.

message 11: by Chris (new)

Chris Decker (steppenfloyd) I'm about halfway through Krondor The Betrayal (The Riftwar Legacy, #1) by Raymond E. Feist . It's the first book I've read by Feist and it's moving a lot faster than most of the other fantasy books I've read lately. And "by moving a lot faster" I mean there's a lot more action.

I read the first Lock Lamora two years ago (!!!) and still haven't got to RSURS. The same with Abercrombie. I read The Blade Itself back in October 2009, and only recently finished the next one.
Consistency is important, but, as Chris mentioned, it all depends on shifts in reading moods.

Well, first of all, I'm not finished yet, so this is not officially my final opinion. And secondly, it's still a fun, witty, quick paced book, so do give it a go =)

Oh, I definitely relate to the shifting moods, and honestly, who doesn't?

What are your thoughts so far on the Glass series? I was contemplating on starting it, but I'd like to know first if it's worth it.

I really like the glass series, tho the study series was better. I really like the way Maria writes and her characters. I think its worth to read it ;) i liked the 2nd Sea Glass (Glass, #2) by Maria V. Snyder better than Storm Glass (Glass, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

That's great =) I always prefer a writer who can create well-rounded characters.
Though if the Study series is better, I should read it first. I've already ordered Poison Study, and can't wait to get my hands on it.

Yea if you havent read the study series you should read those first. The glass series follows a char that you will meet in the study series.
I hope you like poison study. One of my favourite books ;)

One of your favourites? that's promising!
Before I ordered it I was a tad worried about it being a YA novel, in a bad way.

message 22: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1019 comments Finished Wintertide a couple days ago. I really loved it. It was pretty dramatic.

Now I'm reading Old Man's War which is just fantastic so far. It was easy to get into.

message 23: by Adam (new)

Adam Franklin I'm still on Name of the Wind - I wish I could read faster as I have so much to get to - but from what I've seen of it so far -it's a "keeper". Elise - glad you liked Wintertide...I'm still a long way off from it as I've only gotten to Avempartha but Nyphron Rising will be my next book after Name of the Wind.

message 24: by Arthur (last edited Nov 05, 2010 08:56AM) (new)

Arthur (astra) What a coincidence. I am contemplating reading Maria Snyder too. Not right now, but in not so distant future.

I am about 4/5 into The Hero of Ages (Mistborn, #3) by Brandon Sanderson
So far, it is the best book in the series. I don't know how it is going to end but the journey is fantastic. Based on my experience with Sanderson (Warbreaker), he might get rid of a few good guys. It would devastate me if something bad happened to Vin. I like her. She has a true character. Her husband Elend is a less attractive figure. A bookworm and theoretic. Somewhat reminds me of myself.

P.S. I am very glad that Brandon Sanderson undertook the task of finishing WoT. I think he is a very talented writer.

P.P.S. If I do not report back within the next 3 days, then someone I like in the Mistborn saga has died and I am irrigating their grave with single malt whisky.

message 26: by Adam (new)

Adam Franklin Still reading Name of the Wind - I'm enjoying it but the pages are not turning as fast as the last two books I read.

I was gonna start on the Wheel of time by Jordan, but I read a steampunk book instead. :D

Im thinking of reading The Magician's Apprentice after The High Lord.

Set hundreds of years before the events of The Magicians' Guild, THE MAGICIAN'S APPRENTICE is the new novel set in the world of Trudi Canavan's Black Magician Trilogy.

message 30: by Lyle Kimo (new)

Lyle Kimo Valdez (eskablong) I'm not overly fond of prequels, I dont know why. But if it's good, I'll try to read it. :D Just have to finish Leviathan and Behemoth.

message 31: by Alan (new)

Alan Duggan (dugie) Ill download the sample to my Kindle and see what i think before i go ahead with it.

message 32: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1019 comments I finished Old Man's War by John Scalzi a couple days ago. I thought it was fantastic and one of the best sci-fi books I ever read. I also think it would be a good choice if you're new to sci-fi too. It's an easy read, yet also deep.

Now I've started The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis in prep for the movie. :) And I'm going back to The Way of Kings after a hiatus.

message 33: by Sandra (last edited Nov 08, 2010 01:43PM) (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments So far in November, I have finished two audiobooks and one dead tree book. Shadowfane is the third book in the Cycle of Fire Trilogy and I listened to it as I had the first two. My review is here. I also listened to A Thousand Splendid Suns as I had read The Kite Runner and liked it a lot. Afghanistan has always interested me even before the war. My review.

I just finished #2 in the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett - Queens' Play. I read the first one a while ago because people I respect were raving about them. These are great historical novels for anyone willing to do a little work when they read. I got a dictionary app on my new iPhone and it came in very handy. My review.

Here is my November shelf. I hope to finish all of these this month. We'll see.

message 34: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I'm currently reading (and loving) Towers of Midnight. Once I finish it I'm moving on to The Drawing of the Three and then Red Seas Under Red Skies, and maybe Mistborn: The Final Empire as well if I have time.

message 35: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Elise - Glad to hear you like The Old Man's War - one of the best "first sentences" I've seen in a long time. I might not be 100% but it goes something like....

"On my seventy-second birthday I did two things, visit my wives grave and enlist in the army."

As for my reading - I'm still enjoying Hunger Games.

How many times was he married? 'wives'?

I liked Scalzi, but Old Man's War seemed a bit too Mary Sue-ish. Thee hero comes up with all the great ideas and outperforms super-soldiers? A bit much. The other books avoided this problem, very good series overall.

message 42: by Tomi (new)

Tomi Steven Erikson's Memories of Ice. I'm reading these bricks like they were comics.

Fantastic reading. Fantastic.

message 43: by Tina (new)

Tina (nicotinca) Reading Harry Potter this month, hopefully I will be done with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows before it runs in the cinema. I'm really happy to be reading at least one book BEFORE I have seen the movie.
I have just finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and having a break after almost 1000 pages over 4 days.

Next on line is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, maybe The Gunslinger if I find myself fancy a longer break from Harry.

message 44: by Arthur (new)

Arthur (astra) I finished The Hero of Ages (Mistborn, #3) by Brandon Sanderson
My thoughts about it
All in all it is a very good trilogy.

Started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
Let's see whether it lives up to the hype it sparked all over the Internet.

I decided to start on the gunslinger, and so far I'm into it.

Read your review of The Hero of Ages; I loved Vin too! One of my favorite characters I have come across so far. I was so scared at the ending but I think it worked out alright.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

If you like The Gunslinger, I think you will love the series.
I re-read the last chapters of The Hero of Ages yesterday. I had to go through all of this again...scary ending but good... They are happy where they are....

P.S. After re-reading the last chapters I have upped rating to 5 star

message 49: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I zipped through The Dead Don't Cry and will be reviewing it later. It was kind of fun - a scifi YA book about a family living in a futuristic society on Mars, which they call New Earth - Old Earth has been devastated by some kind of ecological disaster. It's fast moving and full of action.

I tried listening to The Pillars of the Earth and abandoned it as worthless, moving on to the queen of historical fiction, Dorothy Dunnett and am listening to #3 in the Lymond Chronicles - The Disorderly Knights, which is riveting. I found it recorded at Recorded Books. Nice, as I am reading it too. I intended to start The Magic of Recluce, but just am not into it right now. Maybe when I finish the Dunnett.

message 50: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments First half of November I made quite a bit of progress, reading and reviewing:

The Hero and the Crown
The Magic of Recluce
Blackout
All Clear
Haze

Yesterday, I started Towers of Midnight. Since that hardcover is so heavy, for my lunch time work reading, I started The Door Into Fire.

I renewed my library book that I plan to read over Thanksgiving, Against All Things Ending.

Anything else after I finish these will come from my current-month shelf.
