Monya provided a link to her work space, making some of us jealous of the wonderful book shelves she has.

How do you store your books? Me I have lots of little bookshelves all over my house. (The previous owner was obviously a book lover as well) There is never enough space. The shelves are full to over flowing. Unless it is a book I really didn't care for I can't part with them.

Marg (margreads) | 86 comments I have two big bookcases that are nearly full, and then I have piles of books all over the rest of the house! Never enough shelves, especially because I do really struggle to get rid of books even if I don't enjoy them.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Ikea bookshelves are great for me because they are cheap and you can get all sizes/colours and they go well in my house!

My best bookcase is one I picked up at a garage sale once. It cost me $20, it's on my todo list to sand back and repolish it. Ummmmm... let me see, when did I buy it? Ummmmmm ... must have been in the early 90's or maybe late 80's. I'll get to it soon. :P

message 5: by Angela (new)

Angela (dilaby) I have a small bookcase for my recent paranormal books, but all my fantasy novels are stored away in my cupboard in roller boxes. Looking at investing in a big bookcase for xmas. :) Can't wait to get them out on the shelves again.

message 6: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda Well lots under the bed in the spare room in roller type blanket boxes. Then even more in those green eco shopping bags stuffed into the top shelf of the spare room built-in cupboard. More in the little basket beside my chair in the lounge room. A little pile ready to fall over on my bedside table. A couple in my workbag. A few more in the backseat of the car that I'm supposed to be lending to my sister. Ummm... Yeah I think that's it! I'm not very organised.:)

message 7: by Monya (new)

Monya (monyamary) Girls, I so relate! I was in similar situations for forty and more years, even after the kids left home. I truly hope the day comes for you all when you have your own library room.

Organised, Mandy? You've seen the pictures!

message 8: by Cass (new)

Cass (casswordsonpaper) I don't have enough bookshelf space. I have two shelves. I double stack. Actually, it's more one and a half shelves, since my DVD player occupies half of the second shelf. :/ My shelves are so "un-me". I have a section of review copies, books I bought/won, books I've already read...AND they're in author last name alphabetical/size.

I have a few books that I had to throw elsewhere. I've got a couple in one of my desk drawers. It's pretty deep so there's room for many more. I also have a separate bookcase for manga and DVDs.

Ikea's my favourite place to buy bookshelves as well. I've got five all full but now that I'm redecorating the house I'll have room for a couple more. Oh and of course my Kindle is also well stocked. I'm addicted to books, what can I say?

message 10: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I bookcross and release most books once I've read them.

I have my full-size bookshelf of my priority to-read. I have a small bookshelf of 'permanent collection.' And I have a pile I call Mt. TBR - 2 dozen banker's boxes, plus some shoeboxes of series plus some loose new acquisitions, mostly from bookcrossing friends and my epic quest of all the used bookstores in the CA/NV greater Sierra and foothill regions....

Once we move, next spring, I'll get some cheap shelves for Mt. TBR so I can see all my to-read choices at once.

message 11: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 114 comments Marg: My house was once as you describe. I eventually culled the herd and now limit myself to just one bookcase, keeping only those books that I feel are too good to give away, or that I will maybe read again one day.

The problem I had with my old shelves was dust and light damage. The books don't keep well on open shelves. The bookcase I now have has doors and I've got to say it's made a HUGE difference.

message 12: by Tegan (new)

Tegan (aussie_tiger87) | 4 comments Well I'm waiting to move into a new apartment so have most of my books in boxes, can't wait to get some big bookshelves.

message 13: by Neko (new)

Neko I've got a walk-in-wardrobe and I've taken to storing books on a shelf in there. I also have some big boxes which have books I've read and don't need out...I usually keep out all my artbooks on my main shelf and then novels/magazines/comics I haven't read yet.

The books in the boxes are usually stored under the stairs or under the house..So I've got plenty of room to store books but I wish I had more displayed sometimes.

message 14: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 08, 2010 12:34AM) (new)

Displaying books is a wonderful part of owning books. That's why I don't mind having to buy some books that aren't available in ebook format. It is also why I might consider spending more money and buying books from Australia reather than Book Depository. I might gripe about the price, but the quality of books produced here is significantly better.

message 15: by Neko (new)

Neko True, i love when i walk into someones house and i can see a good display of books..i find it interesting to see what others read.

if i didn't collect vinyl toys my book shelves would be full of books instead.

what's wrong with the quality of the books you have gotten from BD?

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Hee, books are the only thing I collect.

The books from BD are thin and flimsy, printed on poorer quality paper.

message 17: by Angela (new)

Angela (dilaby) @ Gail - I totally agree. BD is cheaper but the quality just isn't the same. And the books are smaller too. I prefer the bigger paperbacks. Look nicer on the bookshelf and easier to read too. :)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Oh wow. I LOVE that bookcase in message #1.

I am the only major book-worm in my house. My dad hates reading, my mums likes it (but borrows most books from the library), and my brother has only just started-he likes reading, but only a little bit.
Because of this, 99% of novels in my house are on my bookshelf, in my bedroom.

I like to collect books, so I rarely borrow from the library.
I will post a picture of my shelf tommorow (when i find my camera!)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments I get most of my books and CD's from the library, lately I have been downloading some for the IPod as well. The books I do have that I have not yet read sit in a drawer under the bed and there is a pile getting a little high beside my bed. I do have a book case where some of them end up.

Cheryl (cherylllr) J, what are those colorful fat ones, under Stephen King, on the shelf between Tim Winton and Bill Bryson? And what Bryson is that? We're talking about Sunburned Country in another topic here....

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that is the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo I have read them they are quite good, my daughter loved them. I can't understand why but my son will not read them.

Between Tim Winton and Bill Bryson...Thats the Harry Potter series. Possibly the greatest books ever written :)

Unless you mean the Charlie Bone series, as Gail said-but that isnt between Winton and Bryson. It is just underneath some more King books :)

The Bill Bryson books on my shelf are: A Short History of Nearly Everything, and a 2-in-1 book of In a Sunburned Country and A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail.

I've read A Walk In The Woods - very good. And A Sunburned Country, patchy (he didn't get to Queensland but was constantly assured "they're all mad up there!") but entertaining.

Just loved A Short History Of Nearly Everything. Never thought anyone could get me interested in the internal construction of the atom, but Bill B did. He's good at attracting your interest. And it's the first and only book my husband has ever read right through! Helped that he's keen on science.

Currently just finished "Made In America" from the library. Very interesting and unsentimental look at their history and the origins of so many of the words and phrases that have joined the language from the U.S.

I'll get "At Home" for my hubby's birthday.
