How do you think authors feel about being compared to each other? I don't know how authors feel about being compared to other authors. I am not an author, but I am a writer. I wouldn't want to be compared to another writer.

I can understand if a person says Jane Doe's writing style or story reminds me of Sally Tomorrow's writing style or story, but that's where the comparison should end, in my opinion.

I try not to compare authors and their writing styles. To me that just takes away from the enjoyment of the story.

I'm not a writer, but I don't think I would like it, so I would think other authors wouldn't either.

Do you compare the authors you read to others? Why or why not? I don't intentionally but I think maybe I do. When I read a certain author I look for qualities in other authors and often find myself disappointed.

Which authors set the standard for writing quality for you? Julie Garwood, Linda Howard and Lisa Kleypas are 3 of my fave authors.

How do you think authors feel about being compared to each other? I think it would depend on how they were being compared. If favorably then I would think they would feel wonderful to be compared to someone rated so highly.

Which authors set the standard for writing quality for you? Diana Gabaldon (Historical Fiction), Karen Marie Moning (PNR), and Gena Showalter (PNR, Fantasy) are my most fav at this point. But ask me again next year and the list may change.

How do you think authors feel about being compared to each other? Ha..ha.. They probably hate it but what can they do. It's the way of the world. However, if I were a newbie and were compared to very successful authors -- I'd probably like it..a lot.

Do you compare the authors you read to others? Why or why not? Yes, as Historical Romance is a new world to me (just started 2009), I try to buy each best book from each author, and I compare their ways in delivering story, romance, suspense, love-scene and happy-ending.

Which authors set the standard for writing quality for you? So far, I love best : Judith McNaught, Lisa Kleypas, Pamela Clare, Madeline Hunter, Elizabeth Hoyt, Johanna Lindsey, Nan Ryan, Heather Graham, Gaelen Foley, Maggie Osborne, etc

2nd Best : KEW, Sabrina Jeffries, Julie Garwood, etc

Something in the way the author deliver can't catch my interest long enough till the end of the book : Lynn Kurland, Connie Brockway, Cassie Edward, Kat Martin, Dara Joy.

Well perhaps a fact, people are always being compare to each other, whether they feel it or not.

I think it's hard not to do it, but I try to evaluate each author on their own merit based on what kind of stories I enjoy and how well the author was able to draw me into their writing and tell the story, and to allow me to really get to know the characters. I have my favorites, and I tend to look for writers who write stories that appeal to me the same way as my favorite authors. So I guess that is a yes and no.

My top, top tier: Anne Stuart, Lisa Kleypas, JR Ward, Diana Palmer, Kresley Cole, Christine Feehan, Christina Dodd, Manly Wade Wellman, CS Lewis, Laura Kinsale, Nalini Singh, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Simon R. Green, Larissa Ione, Connie Brockway, MR James, Pamela Clare.

I love authors who can write stories that are powerful, that I connect to, and I also admire writers who show clarity and expert use of language to tell a story.

I think what others have said is very apt. I feel that it's a double-edged sword. I'm sure a new author would love being called the next "Jane Austen" or "Stephen King". However, it's probably hurtful when an author is said not to measure up to another author who writes totally different kinds of stories, even if they write in the same genre. I think each person is individual, and their work and their essence should stand on its own.
