Phoenixfalls | 195 comments It's that time of year again! What are your top five science fiction/fantasy novels published in 2010?

Note: I will be using a weighted voting system to tally the votes, so PLEASE rank your top 5! Don't say "in no particular order" because I will simply DECLARE that your order. ;)

message 2: by Phoenixfalls (last edited Dec 13, 2010 11:52PM) (new)

Phoenixfalls | 195 comments Mine are:

1. Bone and Jewel Creatures, by Elizabeth Bear
2. The Bird of the River, by Kage Baker
3. The Empress of Mars, by Kage Baker
4. CryoBurn, by Lois McMaster Bujold
5. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, by N. K. Jemisin

I actually read nine books published this year! I'm so proud of myself! :D

message 3: by Brainycat (new)

Brainycat | 8 comments I fail as a scifi fan this year. I read a lot more horror this year than anything else, and the scifi/fantasy I read is mostly 1-5 years old. I did read and enjoy the heck out of The Second Coming though; put a mark down for "first place" for that.

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments My Top Five SF/Fantasy Reads Published in 2010:

1. Blackout
2. All Clear
3. The Towers of Midnight
4. Under Heaven (currently reading and may move up the list).
5. The Way of Kings

For a different spin on .

message 5: by Phoenixfalls (new)

Phoenixfalls | 195 comments Jon -- Sorry, should've been more specific. I wanted your top five books total, between science fiction AND fantasy -- not a top five in each genre. Can you condense?

Checked out your blog entry; glad you found Robin McKinley this year! She's one of my favorite authors, and The Hero and the Crown is one of my favorite books. :)

message 6: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments Since my TBR has gotten so huge, there were several 2010 books I didn't get to yet. Some I even bought, but are still waiting to read.

That said,

1. Horns by Joe Hill
2. Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson
3. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
4. Kitty's House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn
5. The Second Coming by David H. Burton

message 7: by Laurel (new)

Laurel This has been my most prolific year of reading thus far, and I had quite a few that were published in 2010 to choose from! That said, my favorites would be:

1. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
2. Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay
3. Dreadnought by Cherie Priest
4. The Alchemist and the Executioness
5. Bone and Jewel Creatures by Elizabeth Bear

I loved TheWay of Kings because it feels like I'm there for the beginning of a great epic!

I loved Under Heaven for it's profound beauty.

I loved Dreadnought for being a rip-snorting fun adventure tale!

I loved The Alchemist and The Executioness for being completely unique, and one of the mist fascinating worlds I've ever read or heard about.

I loved Bone and Jewel because it was an old fashioned fable told in a fantastical manner. Plus, it was my first introduction to Elizabeth Bear, and I think I've found another author whose entire catalogue I must read!

Done and thanks for checking out my blog. I managed to mooch the other McKinley book Blue Sword as well.

message 9: by Phoenixfalls (new)

Phoenixfalls | 195 comments Laurel -- Yay! I was not expecting anyone else to mention Bone & Jewel Creatures! I technically found Bear last year, but this year is the year she became one of my "buy immediately, and in hardcover" authors. Except that, you know, her sci-fi is all straight to paperback. :( (okay, I suppose smiley face for it being cheap, but frowny face because I *like* hardbacks. . .)

Jon -- I didn't love The Blue Sword quite as much. . . but it is still excellent.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Hrm, only managed to get to 3 books published this year.
Changes
The Way of Kings
The Desert Spear

message 11: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 18, 2010 01:43PM) (new)

Haven't gotten to all that i have to read from 2010 yet since most books ive read are from other years, but of what ive read thats published this year its:

1. Son of Ereubus
2. Succubus Shadows
3. Sea Glass
4. Last Sacrifice
5. The Reckoning

message 12: by Julie (new)

Julie S. Sorry, I can't rank mine. I don't think I've read more than one or two books published in 2010. Most of mine are from 2008 or sooner.. :(

message 13: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 200 comments only two come to mind as being truly high quality, and i'm not sure one of them even counts as science fiction:

1. The Passage
2. The Evolutionary Void

I only have 3 published in 2010 SF&F reads:

1)Who Fears Deathby Nnedi Okarafor
2)Naamah's Curseby Jacqueline Carey
3)The Gaslight Dogsby Karin Lowachee

There is the possibility that I might read more in December. So do I get to do a second post with two more 2010 SF&F books if I read them?

message 15: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) Okay, I sorted my 2010 shelf by publication date and I had over 30 books on the list that were published in 2010. Between Audible, FirstReads, and my library's fantastic new books section, I score a lot of the newest stuff. Most of the 2010 publications I've read weren't SF/F. I decided not to include the two Kitty Norville books or the two Dresden Files books that came out this year because I probably would have liked them no matter what. Here are the standouts from the rest:

1. Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okarafor

2. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin

3. Dreadnought by Cherie Priest

4. Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis

5. The Desert Spear by Peter V. Brett

It was really hard to decide which of the first two to put first.

This thread is making my TBR list expand far too much...

Phoenixfalls | 195 comments Shomeret wrote: "There is the possibility that I might read more in December. So do I get to do a second post with two more 2010 SF&F books if I read them?"

Maybe, maybe not. I'm compiling everybody's lists here, on Shelfari, and on PaperbackSwap; when the threads have gone quiet for a while I'm going to post the winners. So. . . it depends on how long the conversation keeps going! (Of course, if people do all want to add votes right at the end of the year, the math shouldn't be too hard so I can always go back and edit even my announcement of the winners. . . so the answer's probably yes. I just like to hear myself talk/type.) :D

message 20: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments My favorites from 2010 in alphabetical order:

Ship Breaker, Paolo Bacigalupi
Under Heaven, Guy Gavriel Kay
The Dervish House, Ian McDonald
The Folding Knife, K.J. Parker
Black Lung Captain, Chris Wooding

Laurel wrote: "I loved The Alchemist and The Executioness for being completely unique, and one of the mist fascinating worlds I've ever read or heard about."

Just curious, but how did you get a hold of these two already? Did you get ARCs?

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments This is a cool concept. It was hard to choose. I'm sad that Iorich's street date was 29 December of last year. Otherwise it would definitely be in my top 5. On that note, I believe The City & The City was from 2009?

(1) Feed
(2) Zombies vs. Unicorns
(3) Moonshine
(4) The Bird of the River
(5) Magic Below Stairs

Some also-rans:

State of Decay
The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack
Except the Queen
Shade
The House on Durrow Street
The Dervish House

I may read a few more 2010 books before the year is over, in which case I reserve the right to rearrange things here. >.>

You read Black Lung Captain? Good, bad? I enjoyed the first and want to get the second, but wasn't sure if I wanted to go ahead and order from a UK store or just wait for it.

Sorry for the slight derail, OP.

message 23: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Beniowa,

The novellas were originally written as an audio release. I think that due to their success, they are now being released as novellas, (which I've ordered and can't wait to read).

Try the audiobook through iTunes or another provider. Best narrations I think I've ever heard!

message 24: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments Laurel, oh, duh. I totally forgot about the audio release. Those aren't an option for me so I'll try to be patient for the Subpress editions!

Ala wrote: "You read Black Lung Captain? Good, bad? I enjoyed the first and want to get the second, but wasn't sure if I wanted to go ahead and order from a UK store or just wait for it."

I've heard a few people didn't like Black Lung Captain as much as Retribution Falls, but I thought it was just as good. I'm glad I didn't wait for it! :)

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

damnit.

maybe I'll just hint about it for christmas :P

Thank Beniowa79

Crap. You're right. Will have to edit my post in the three million places I asked for this info from people. . . ;)

(It's not three million really. Not quite.)

Yay to another person putting The Bird of the River on their list!!! :D

message 27: by Spirited (new)

Again, someone who loves Chris Wooding! He is my favorite author. I love how steam punk The Tales of the Ketty Jay series is. Is he uber famous in the UK, cause he isn't in the US, which makes me sad. He serious rocks my socks off. Ok, back to the point...

My top three published in 2010, cause that's all I read in SF/F:
Black Lung Captain by Chris Wooding
Havoc by Chris Wooding
Bite Me by Christopher Moore

message 29: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments Alot of good inpjut - there is a similar post on sffworld - and I'm getting a lot of good ideas for reading from that - stil need to make my own list....

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 243 comments 1. Blackout/All Clear - Connie Willis (the author considers it one book split into two. If you don't, then All Clear takes my first spot, Blackout my second spot.)
3. Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins

message 31: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 411 comments I've already posted a top 3, but I've read one more really good 2010 alternate universe book to add.

message 34: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikespencer) | 75 comments I think the only book I can vote for is Changes, because everything else I read last year was published prior to 2010. But Changes was really good!

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Aw, Desert Spear didn't crack the top ten...

message 36: by Kevin (last edited Jan 09, 2011 08:52AM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Good work, two Brandon Sanderson WOW! Changes too, that is a bonus. Way of Kings beating Mockingjay, not that I hate it, one of the most praised book.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments Huh, somehow I missed that Mockingjay was there, or had forgotten. I listened to the audio version of The Hunger Games and wasn't impressed enough to continue the series. Did anyone else here have a different experience?

message 38: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikespencer) | 75 comments Nikki wrote: "Huh, somehow I missed that Mockingjay was there, or had forgotten. I listened to the audio version of The Hunger Games and wasn't impressed enough to continue the series. Did anyon..."

Actually, I got The Hunger Games for Christmas and loved it. Yes, it is meant for young adults, but I still really enjoyed it. I'll definitely read the next two. I didn't listen to the audiobook though, so I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments I probably should have mentioned that I read a ton of YA books. So I enjoy it but have perhaps become picker due to overexposure. I could buy that listening versus reading makes for a different experience.

message 40: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I think these are all from 2010

and the numbers don't mean anything

2. Pegasus by Robin McKinley
3. Changes by Jim Butcher

5. Muse and Reverie by Charles de Lint
6. Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold
7. All Clear and Blackout by Connie Willis
8. Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451: The Authorized Adaptation by Timothy Hamilton
