I'm going to start of the group suggestions for February with Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos .

message 3: by Christy (new)

Christy (christy_t) I'll add to the suggestions with Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok .

Ohhhh, this one looks good too! I love reading about different cultures and people.

message 5: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve (darlingjune) Could I be a bit greedy and suggest two different books from my to-read list?

I was thinking of these: Blindness by José Saramago and The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

They have been suggested to me on a number of occasions and I hear especially Blindness is really good.

Christy (christy_t) It's not greedy to add from your TBR; it's good sense. :) I personally have so many on my TBR the last thing I need is to pick books I haven't already considered reading.

Those look good too, I think we are starting to gather a good collections. I think we can also make it so that if the book you nominate doesn't win you can nominate again the next month.

message 8: by Christy (new)

Christy (christy_t) I think that is fair. As long as we are running a poll the group is able to make the decision of what to read so it doesn't seem unfair to have a book nominated more than once.

I need to know if people still want to try a group read for the month of February? The January read didn't really take off so I just wanted to see what people felt was going to work.

Thanks!

°Õ³Üğç±ð Gökırmak (tugcenidasevin) I am still up for it, I found the group reading quite good, I can only do it online because it is not very popular, the book club thing here in IStanbul, so I am ready for it ... I will be glad if we can decide a book before it's too late because I don't want it to be like in January for me too many books I want to read and very little time left :D Starting the Great Gatsby very soon...
And for suggestion, I always find difficult to suggest books but I am wanting to get my hands on Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen for awhile now, I know many read it already and heard so many good reviews of it, who knows maybe this groupd read can make me read it :)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I am definitely interested in doing these group reads, as they are a great way to expose myself to things I probably wouldn't otherwise. I'm also always interested to see other people's thoughts on books I've read.

Okay, we'll give it another try for next month! If everyone who wants to participate gets their book nomination posted here by Friday 1/21/11 I will make a poll.

message 13: by Christy (new)

Christy (christy_t) I think a lot of people just get started really late in the month (like me!), so maybe the discussion will really kick off late. I say we definitely give it another go.

Sounds like a plan :)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Left Neglected by Lisa Genova

Thought I'd add this since I just read Still Alice and am VERY excited about reading this newest one by Genova.

But, just a warning: this book JUST came out so might be hard to find in libraries. I know I am seventh in line to get my library's ONE copy. If chosen, this is one people may have to invest in buying in order to read any time soon.

Just think ahead since it takes time to get this all done....could we pick the #1 for Feb and #2 for Mar?

message 20: by Christy (last edited Jan 18, 2011 08:17PM) (new)

Christy (christy_t) I'd be great with the top 2 being the next 2 months reads. It would allow us time to get a head start on the reading, which might encourage discussion.

Great looking set of picks we have going!

°Õ³Üğç±ð Gökırmak (tugcenidasevin) that sounds like a plan Andrea, this way we will both be able to get the books in time and start ahead if we want to.

message 22: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Vetsch Sounds like a great idea Andrea! Since school has slowed down my reading I would love to know what the next two books will be ahead of time.

message 23: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve (darlingjune) I 3rd or 4th this idea as well Andrea. Knowing ahead of time is a good idea!

Okay, I think we got enough people who want to do this that we will go ahead with this idea. We can always change it later if it doesn't work. I know a lot of groups that pick two months at a time for some of the reasons you guys already suggested. It is also a little less work from an administrative side...lol You guys are reading so much I'm having a hard time keeping up!

message 25: by Kendra (new)

Kendra (okaynevermind) When are we to have a poll? I'd like a bit of advance in knowing which book to get. Also, are nominations exclusively fiction?

I am planning on clsing the nominations at the end of today and then posting the poll tomorrow. We'll give people a couple of days to vote and then pick the books for 2/2011 and 3/2011. Then members can read the books during that month and we will discuss at the end of the month when everyone is finishing up the book. So the end of next week we will be discussing this months read, the Great Gatsby. We are winging this as a new part of the forum so we are open to any ideas!
