Random (rand0m1s) Kevin wrote: "How could anyone after that not know the end, even if one has not read it."

Some of us work very hard to avoid learning anything specific about books we haven't read. I personally go so far as to avoid looking at reviews beyond trusted sources or basic average rating data.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2694 comments I'll add to what Random said, and say that I don't read blurbs about the books in a series after where I am, either, since a lot of times those give away spoilery information as well.

I'm with you, reading blurbs of future books in the series beyond the book you're up to almost always leads to a spoiler.

message 104: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments Yeah, that happens. I got books 2&3 of the Farseer trilogy. And made the stupid mistake of looking on the back of book #3. Doh!...

message 105: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments Noooooooooooo! Was it bad?

message 106: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments I think so....

message 107: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) Oh yeah, that would have been very bad.

What this be that even if you have the book?

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2694 comments I don't have a million unread books at home like some people, so I don't tend to buy books beyond the point I'm reading.

That said - yes, even if I had books 11 & 12 at home, I would not read the blurb on the back on book 12 before I'd read book 11.

message 110: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) Kevin wrote: "What this be that even if you have the book? "

Of course. Ownership or possession does not remove the desire to stay spoiler free. You just learn to avoid things like the back cover blurbs.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments Kevin wrote: "What this be that even if you have the book?"

I don't know what this means.

Lara Amber (laraamber) | 664 comments Ahem, if you had a Kindle, the blurbs would never be an issue...

(couldn't resist)

message 113: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Lets no0t turn this thread into talking about this anymore. It is what we are looking forward to not what we're not because of spoliers.

Random (rand0m1s) Lara Amber wrote: "Ahem, if you had a Kindle, the blurbs would never be an issue...

Not totally accurate. You can still have introductions, other author comments, etc at the beginning of ebooks which can be even worse than back cover blurbs.

Spoilers that you put out there, lets get it right.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2694 comments @Lara Amber - I'd also have sore eyes, because the contrast on those things kill me.

@Dawn - which he still hasn't edited.

To stay on topic, I'm no longer looking forward to Changes coming out in paperback, because I no longer need to. :P

There is more than just that in the book. The first sentence, was how Jim to give away the plot of the book.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Mike wrote: "The next book in the Dresden Files, Ghost Story, is slotted for an April release and I'm definitely looking forward to that."

Look at what happened.

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)

Are you really trying to blame Mike for what happened?

message 120: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Ala wrote: "Are you really trying to blame Mike for what happened?"

No, not really, just wanted him to know the effect.

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

The effect you have when you post?

message 122: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments Lesson learned! Everyone, make sure NOT to post about books you are looking forward to here... Kevin might spoil them and then it will be your fault.

message 123: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Wow, did not know that if you are looking forward to something, they may have not read the last book in that series. Again, it might have sound as I tried to blamed on him, but I was not really trying to. I did not know that it would be that big of a deal. I mean if you read most of a series, but not the latest book, it would be not be a big deal for me to know what was so the big plot changes that has happend. I mean look at the title of the book.

message 124: by Dawn (last edited Jan 14, 2011 03:33PM) (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments He may have, but not everyone else. How hard is that to grasp?

message 125: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Looking forward to The Collected Stories: The Legend of Drizzt, just a few more week! Not really new, but a collection like Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2694 comments Dawn wrote: "He may have, but not everyone else. How hard is that to grasp?"

Extremely, apparently.

I guess you all would not be posting on certain topics on the Jim Butcher group.

message 128: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Well this change is not like if this happened it other series. The series is not going to end for another seven or eight books.

message 129: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Dawn wrote: "He may have, but not everyone else. How hard is that to grasp?"

You may want to change everyone to some, I am certain there are less than all the people in this thread, some have. I should say to those who have not read Changes. To be best for to put everyone on a equal footing, not talking about plots to books in general.

message 130: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon (last edited Jan 14, 2011 04:50PM) (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2694 comments Kevin:

1) You have no business commenting on anyone elses grammar or word usage. Ever. Dawn's post is quite correct - "not everyone else has" is the same as suggesting some may have. It merely means that "not everyone" has.

2) It is a general rule that most people are aware of to not discuss plot elements of books, unless specifically in discussion about that book, and, even then, in threads or posts that are marked with spoilers if you are discussing points which may spoil the book for others. This is basic etiquette, which most, though clearly not all, people are aware of.

3) You wanted to move away from discussing this. That's fine. It never had to be a discussion in the first place. You were asked to edit your post and mark the spoiler. You had to argue that it wasn't a spoiler, even though 4 or 5 people were telling you it was. You were the one that turned this into a long, drawn-out discussion. It could've been over in 5 posts, max, if you'd just edited your original damn post.

And I'm not even in the Jim Butcher group. But when the UF group I am in was discussing 'Changes', I avoided the thread.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Does the fact change if you have never seen any one of the Star Wars movies, but found out that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father, or Princess Leia and Luke was actually long lost twins, separated from birth?

Yes, yes it would. Because those are big moments in the movies, and if I had not seen them before, I'd be even more pissed off at you than I already am.

But I'm done arguing with you. You clearly are incapable of just saying "Sorry. Let me edit that so other people don't stumble across it." You will argue until you're blue in the face, in even more elaborate knots, just so you don't have to actually admit you may have been in the wrong.

I edited in a way that no one would know the difference, but I guess that is not good enough for you. You just wanted that deleted.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments Wouldn't it just be so much easier to do this?

I was looking at the Harry Dresden book coming out. Oh, and I noticed something.

****SPOILER up thru Changes**

Harry got a vasectomy. Yeah, really. No, he didn't. This is just an example spoiler and didn't happen. This is just the kind of thing we mark so the whole thread doesn't become a giant clusterfuck.

**END SPOILER*

So that's what I'm saying...Cool, ain't it?

message 142: by [deleted user] (new)

To be honest, Kevin, I'm getting pretty pissed at you right now.

It's as simple as this:
DO NOT DISCUSS PLOT POINTS OF BOOKS/MOVIES WITHOUT MARKING IT AS A SPOILER, OR IN A SPECIFIC SPOILER THREAD

This isn't fucking rocket science, man. It's just common courtesy.

Not everyone has had time to read/watch everything.

Just because YOU have doesn't mean everyone else has as well.

So stop.

Mike (mikespencer) | 75 comments Holy crap. I apologize to everyone that is following this thread. I had no intention of starting this. I just love the Dresden series and think the next book sounds great.

message 144: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 14, 2011 10:25PM) (new)

It's not your fault at all, Mike. Please don't take it as such.

Several of us are actually looking forward to the next Dresden book. We even posted about it on the first page of the thread.

It has nothing to do with you or your post, and everything to do with Kevin posting spoilers then arguing about it.

message 145: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments I'm looking forward to the Dresden books too, for that matter. I just haven't started any of them yet.

I never said that it was Mike's fault.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments I know this must disappoint you, Kevin, but not everything is about you. Ala responded that way because Mike apologized.

I was reminded of this xkcd strip (which, yes, contains spoilers for some books and movies of varying ages) by the latest turn this thread has taken: .

Julie S. Back to the actual topic that was originally posted:

I am looking forward to Delirium. It sounds like an interesting dystopian novel.

message 150: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I'm turning into quite the Cherie Priest fan, and I think that her new Vampire novel Bloodshot looks awfully fun!

Happily, The Wise Man's Fear is being released on my 35th birthday - YAY!

I also sincerely hope to read Scott Lynch's next book, The Republic of Thieves, if it is indeed released this year.
