Lisa (anzlitlovers) hi, I've joined the Village Reading Challenge at Winston's Dad (see I want to do it with all-Australian titles. Can anyone suggest books I could use? I don't read crime, romance, chicklit or Young Adult, just literary fiction so I was thinking of writers like Thea Astley, David Malouf, but I need more. Any suggestions would be great, thanks, Lisa Hill, ANZ LitLovers ()

Mandapanda I'm guessing you need recommendations for books set in rural/outback Australian towns (which would be our translation of 'villages'). Is that right? And no crime romance chicklit or young adult!! Gee you don't make it easy Lisa! LOL. Some suggestions could be:

Breath by Tim Winton
A Town Like Alice by Neville Shute
Books by Colin Thiele
Oyster by Janette Turner Hospital
Carpentaria by Alexis Wright
Eucalyptus: A Novel by Murray Bail
My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin

More recent releases could be:
The Lightkeeper's Wife by Karen Viggers
Bereft by Chris Womersley
Stillwater Creek by Alison Booth

I'll hand it over to someone else now but for me the first books I think of when I think of a village are Agatha Christie's Miss Marple and Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Lady Detective! Good Luck with your challenge.:)

Wow, Mandy, thank you! I have read some of these, but will check out the ones that are new to me, you're very kind to go to so much trouble!

Jacqueline George (jacquelinegeorge) Falling into Queensland will be joining the list very soon! With the editors now. It's a crime/adventure that has be accused of National Geographicalism by some-one who doesn't believe Far North Queensland is actually like that.
