30.1. Cheryl's Task: Literature Map By Gender

Using literature-map.com choose one of your favorite authors of either gender and enter it. When the results come up, choose 2 new authors who you have never read before and who are of the opposite gender from yourself. Read one book by each of these authors.

For instance,if I enter Janet Evanovich, I will have James Patterson and Jasper Fforde on my map. If I have never read these authors before, I can read a book by each of them.

When posting, please indicate who your initial author was.

chucklesthescot I must admit I'll be skipping this one. Every favourite author I've put in over the last 30 minutes has given virtually all female options for 'new to me' authors, which are no use with me being female. I also think the map needs an overhaul as it is filled with wrong spellings, character names instead of authors, and when I tried putting 'Rachel Caine' into the map search two options given were Hillary Clinton and Paris Hilton!!! Now that is warped...

Dee (austhokie) | 8867 comments i lucked out - I plugged in Kathy Reichs and got John Sandford and Henning Mankell (both of whom I have books by, but have never gotten around the reading)

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11182 comments J D Robb and Sarah Addison Allen gave me a few male authors I've never read but I really hit the jackpot with J.K. Rowling -- she's in there are Joanne K Rowling.

message 10: by Cindy AL (new)

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Hhhmm, I'll try J.K. Rowling. Would it be possible for us to use 2 favorite authors? I'm either getting no men, or only one male author.

message 11: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments I have a question. I put J.K. Rowlings into the task and one of the male author's that showed up is Orson Scott Card. I haven't read him yet but I have a couple of his books slotted for this challenge. Does the book I read for this task have to be the first of his books that I read for the challenge? Because one of the books of his that I am going to read for this challenge arrived at the library, but it is for another task, not this one. Sorry that is so wordy.

message 12: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 2036 comments I decided to try my favorite male authors hoping more males would pop up. I put in Jasper Fforde and although I had read a lot of the male authors that came up, I found these two possibilities:
Matt Ruff Bad Monkeys
and one that I am very curious about
The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Randy Rankin;)

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Tried JK Rowling...got Shakespeare?! Did get more men that time, Hemingway, Salinger and Harry Potter, whodah thunk it! My problem is that I read too much.

I got Robert Jordan and Orson Scott Card and Shakespeare and several others when I put J.K. Rowlings in. I originally put in Sarah Dessen but I got just about nobody male and those that were there I had already read a book by them.

Fran | 730 comments I put in Stephenie Meyer (I really liked the Twilight books) and got several male YA authors if anyone's interested. Ned Vizzini, John Green, Scott Westerfeld plus 4 other male authors.

Ashlea Daune (ashyydaune) | 44 comments I looked up Stephenie Meyer and got Rick Riordan, he does 39 clues, would 39 clues be okay to read for this challenge?

If he's new to you this challenge, that will work.

(Cheryl's going to be out of touch for a couple weeks, so I'll be answering in this thread).

I have to second Sarah Addison Allen. I'm pretty excited about my choices - they look interesting!

Kelly | 129 comments I put in Kate Morton and got quite a few male authors. I plan on reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (which I have been dying to read for a few months now), and a book by Neil Gaiman (probably The Graveyard Book or Neverwhere). I've never read any of his books, yet they always sound intriguing to me.

If you've never read Rick Riordan before, that would work.

chucklesthescot Even using male authors isn't giving me anything. The options are either men I've read or men I've no interest in reading. I'm giving up!

I'm struggling also, I can't find two male authors with one "favorite" author, and I'm way beyond true favorites. I can get one male author back or lots of female. Please keep posting your choices, I'm reverse engineering now!

What sort of books do you like? For instance, I like a lot of sci-fi/fantasy authors - when I put in Mercedes lackey and Anne McCaffrey, I only found a couple male authors on each I could use. But, when I put in Charles de Lint, I found a bunch of male authors who I've never read.

Even if someone is not a "favorite author" (in that you like pretty much anything by him/her), if you've read a book by someone and you really liked that book, the author could be considered a "favorite."

message 28: by Katie (new)

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 260 comments Jackpot! I put in Ernest Hemmingway and got lots of male authors. I'm ashamed to admit how many of the classics I haven't read so this will give me a chance to use some of those.

I had to combine the authors - this is the correct link now: Ernest Hemingway

message 32: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 312 comments These authors each gave me several choices

John Steinbeck
Markus Zusak
Khaled Hosseini

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

I put in Michael Grant, and had to look through several before I found two male authors I HADN'T already read! Apparently I read too much of that style/genre. Haha.

The Maze Runner
The Da Vinci Code (...seriously. I've never read it. :P)

Neither have I, although I've read books inspired by
The Da Vinci Code

message 35: by Cindy AL (new)

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Thanks Sandy. I'm noting a couple of things - my very favorite authors and favorite genre even don't give me enough authors I havent read and for some reason entering male authors yields more male author results and vice versa. Ok at least I think I can make this work. Thanks

message 36: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 2036 comments Another approach that has worked for me on the lit map tasks is "backwards planning". Put in the name of an author you've never read but want to and then see if any of your known authors come up. Then put that author's name in. Often the name you wanted will come up and hopefully at least one more you can use.

message 37: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (eagle1964) | 270 comments I used Patricia Cornwell (I like mystery, forensic, thriller) and there were a lot of ones I had never read. I was familiar with the names but had never read them. I am touching base but am not back for good. Thanks Kristi for answering all these questions!!!!! I am almost well and I HOPE (fingers crossed) that this surgery will hold. It doesn't appear so but I am still praying about it.

Thanks Again all of you. I like seeing who all is being read that I havent's tried myself.

Oh Cheryl, sorry to hear you have had surgery, hope you are better soon and keep your chin up. Sometimes when you have surgery for a longstanding condition or a painful condition, it just takes time for healing. Bless you.

Amanda (amandapearl) | 267 comments If a book has two authors, can I just choose one? For example, I want to read Will Grayson, Will Grayson which has two authors, John Green and David Levithan. I want to use David Levithan for the author and read another book Looking for Alaska which is by just John Green. Is this ok?

did we decide on this? :( I Started reading Looking for Alaska, and I've also read Paper Towns (also by John Green) and I'm trying to work them both into the challenge...it's hard!

message 41: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (eagle1964) | 270 comments I am so sorry to be so slow on answering your question Amanda Pearl.

If a new male author that you have never read is an author or a co-author of a book, you may use that book.

I am just interested in you reading a brand new (to you) author. You have the gist of the task so both of your books will be acceptable as long as you use the two different authors.

Joanna (walker) | 433 comments Akk! When I set up my spreadsheet, I used "Bret Easton Ellis" as my author and picked two new-to-me male authors to read: Omar Khayyam and Gordon R. Dickson.

But when I went back today to look at the map, I realize that I used a misspelling of Bret Easton Ellis -- I must have put in Brent Easton Ellis (or, more likely, clicked on it from a different map). On the misspelled map, my two authors appear. But the misspelling isn't the right author.

So, can I still use the map of Brent Easton Ellis?
