Nike Chillemi If a character were a skip tracer in most localities would they be licensed to carry a concealed weapon?

All of these so-called reality shows aside, wouldn't they do most of thier "hunting" online? Wouldn't they subscribe to various data bases that ordinary people can't subscribe to?

And when they do find the skip, if the person was a criminal, wouldn't they call the police in to take custody? If it were a runaway teen, wouldn't they call child protective services before trying to pick up the child?

Shame on me, Nike. Just saw this question today.

I would imagin thatmost "skip tracers" would be licensed private investigators, who do this as part of their services. In many states, a private investigator's license does not mean the license comes with a concealed weapons permit. Usually, this is a seperate issue and license, that entails qualifying with the firearms, classes, etc.

If they do find a skip, they should contact the police to take custody. However, it the crook has violated bond and has warrants, the locater can make a citizen's arrest and then contact the police. With runway teens, they could hold on to them until the police arrive (if a runaway report has been filed) or hold onto them until social services/legal guardians can respond.

Hope this helps.

Nike Chillemi Thx, I'm creating a female character who's going to grow into the PI business. She's starting as a receptionist, secretary, jane of all trades to a PI who has his own office, but works exclusively for a small to moderate size criminal law firm so that covers a lot of licensing issues. She's gonna be good with computers and just naturally starts skip tracing.

Don't know what the relationship between PI and gal friday is gonna be...not romantic. Maybe big brother-little sister.

I wish you well, Nike. Sounds like this story could have many interesting plots to choose from. Best wishes. .... Mark.
